Use[]

The Gatling Gun has balanced Attack Power Attack Power and Magic Attack Magic Attack attributes, moderate durability attributes, and is a well-rounded weapon overall. When upgraded, most of the unlocked abilities it provides are unremarkable, and outside of boosts to Barret's attributes and MP, it provides a 5% boost to Barret's limit break damage and a 10% boost to his Overcharge. As it is a ranged weapon, Gatling Gun allows Barret to easily target otherwise unreachable enemies, and to position himself in a way to avoid damage.

Gatling Gun is a versatile weapon, but does not excel in any area. The melee equivalent weapon for Barret is Steel Pincers Steel Pincers, which provides better attributes and faster materia slot growth, but as a melee weapon, gives Barret an entirely different role in combat that focuses less on positioning and more on raw area-of-effect damage. Compared to other ranged weapons, Gatling Gun is weaker than both the Light Machine Gun Light Machine Gun and EKG Cannon EKG Cannon in increasing Barret's magical damage, while it is weaker to Big Bertha Big Bertha in terms of physical damage and durability.

Gatling Gun provides Barret durability, but does not maximize his potential in any role. In Barret's role of dealing ranged physical damage to single targets, Big Bertha is a better choice, while dealing area-of-effect physical damage is better served by Barret's melee weapons. In a spellcasting role, the EKG Cannon and Light Machine Gun are better choices, and in using Barret as a tank to draw damage away from party members, both Light Machine Gun and Big Bertha provide more durability. Barret is better off focused towards one role rather than being generalized, meaning the player may opt to choose a weapon that better takes advantage of his more specific capabilities.

Behind the scenes[]

Gatling Gun appears on Barret in the Chapter 18 bike minigame cutscenes where he shoots at a Shinra helicopter, even if the player had him equipped with something else.

Etymology[]

The Gatling gun is one of the best-known early rapid-fire weapons and a forerunner of the modern machine gun named after its inventor Richard Gatling. The Gatling gun's operation centered on a cyclic multi-barrel design which facilitated cooling and synchronized the firing/reloading sequence. Each barrel fired a single shot when it reached a certain point in the cycle, after which it ejected the spent cartridge, loaded a new round, and allowed the barrel to cool allowing higher rates of fire without the barrel overheating.
