The Gatling Gun is Barret's initial weapon in Final Fantasy VII. In addition to being equippable by Barret, it is also used by him in cutscenes. Due to this, it cannot be sold or thrown. The Gatling Gun is a basic weapon, and like most weapons for Barret, is long range. It is quickly replaced by the Assault Gun.
Mechanics[]
As the Gatling Gun has a base Attack stat bonus of 14, the base damage for physical attacks when the Gatling Gun is equipped is in the following formula:
where "Level" is Barret's current level and "Strength" is his Strength stat. The Gatling Gun also has an Attack% (Accuracy) of 97%. It grants no bonus to Barret's Magic stat.
Use[]
The Gatling Gun is initially equipped by Barret, and can be replaced very quickly by the Assault Gun within the first quest. Gatling Gun should be replaced immediately, as it has very low stats. Gatling Gun has a single Materia slot, but by the time the player can equip Materia for Barret, it is already replaceable.
Etymology[]
Gatling gun is one of the best-known early rapid-fire weapons and a forerunner of the modern machine gun named after its inventor Richard Gatling. The Gatling gun's operation centered on a cyclic multi-barrel design which facilitated cooling and synchronized the firing/reloading sequence. Each barrel fired a single shot when it reached a certain point in the cycle, after which it ejected the spent cartridge, loaded a new round, and allowed the barrel to cool allowing higher rates of fire without the barrel overheating.
