Story[edit | edit source]

Before Bravely Second[edit | edit source]

Gathelatio was once the capital of the Crystal Orthodoxy. When Braev Lee rebelled against the corrupt church during the Great Plague, the Orthodoxy found itself unable to repel his vast army and was crushed in battle. Seizing control of the Orthodoxy's Head Temple and of the Temple of Earth, Braev Lee re-established the Duchy of Eternia, ending the Orthodoxy's rule on the continent and isolating the city from the rest of the world.

Bravely Second: End Layer[edit | edit source]

After having learned the truth about the corruption of the Orthodoxy, Agnès Oblige became its new pope and endeavored to make peace with the Duchy. On the day she is to sign a peace treaty with Braev Lee to finally reconcile, Kaiser Oblivion attacks the Sanctum. Easily defeating Braev, Yew Geneolgia, Agnès and Alternis Dim, the kaiser abducts Agnès and imprisons her aboard the Skyhold. Having survived his injuries, Yew sets out on a quest to rescue Agnès with his long-time friends Janne and Nikolai.

Returning to the city after having narrowly escaped an attempt on his life by Janne, who had defected to the Empire, Yew finds a dying Nikolai, who had returned to the city to check on the wounded. Explaining that they were attacked by the empire, Nikolai begs Yew to abandon his fight against the empire before succumbing to his wounds. Yew instead decides to carry on his quest alone and again sets out to rescue Agnès.

It's later revealed that Nikolai had faked his death, having also defected to the empire, so he would not have to fight and kill Yew. Having failed to rescue Agnès, the party returns to Gathelatio in search of a boat to resume their pursuit. They meet Swordmaster Nobutsuna Kamiizumi, who gives them his boat (actually a small canoe) and they depart for the Harena Region.

After the party travels back in time, they end up in the Sanctum the day the kaiser abducted Agnès. They fight and defeat the kaiser, who's revealed to be Denys Geneolgia, Yew's older brother. Janne and Nikolai quickly spirit him away however. Gathering his allies, Yew formulates a plan to stop the kaiser using their knowledge of how events transpired in the previous loop.

Eventually Denys abandons the Skyhold and flees to the Geneolgia Crypts beneath the city, where he intends to make his last stand. The party finds and defeats him, but Yew spares his life and welcomes him back to his old home. The next day Denys is put on trial, and fully expects to be sentenced to death. Agnès reveals that all of his comrades are alive and well, and spares his life. Touched by both Yew's and Agnès' kindness, Denys discards his kaiser persona, putting an end to his crusade against the corruption of the Geneolgia family.

Spoilers end here.
