Restores HP. It cannot be used in the field. Equip as an Add-on.

Description

The Garnet is a jewel in Final Fantasy IX that everyone can equip as an add-on, which can also be used during battle as a healing item. It teaches Bahamut to Dagger, as well as Healer, which makes the character's Attack heal its target rather than deal damage. Amassing Garnets in the inventory makes Bahamut's summon attack stronger.

Obtain[]

ChocographLoc21

Outer Island chocograph.

One Garnet is obtained as part of the story after the party returns from the Outer Continent. Sixteen of them are found in the Outer Island chocograph treasure, reached by progressing Chocobo Hot and Cold after Hilda Garde III is available until Choco can fly and then digging around Chocobo's Air Garden until the chocograph is discovered.

Garnets may also drop from Abadons and Stilvas and be stolen from Abadons and Chimeras. They can be synthesized in Daguerreo, Black Mage Village (endgame), and the Legendary Synthesis Shop for 350 gil, Ore, and Remedy. They sell for 1 gil. Remedies can be purchased in shops whereas Eiko can manufacture endless Ores with her Jewel spell.

Mechanics[]

The amount of Garnets in the player's inventory affects Mega Flare's attack power. Mega Flare's power is 88 + No. of Garnets held.

The Garnet can also be used as an item during battle, to restore HP equivalent to the total stock of Garnets x12. Jewels are the only healing items that work on Zombiefied/undead targets. It can be a powerful healing item, but is unaffected by Chemist and cannot be used while in the field.

Use[]

The Garnet is mainly useful for teaching Dagger Bahamut and then empowering his Mega Flare, though it is already powerful in its own right. Bahamut is among Dagger's most powerful eidolons alongside Odin, Atomos, and Ark, though the latter is only learned near the end of the game.

As jewels do not grant stats, the player should unequip them after mastering the abilities they hold.

Etymology and origin[]

Garnets are a group of silicate minerals that have been used since the Bronze Age as gemstones and abrasives. The birthstone for January is a garnet. In the context of Final Fantasy IX, the stone is Princess Garnet's namesake. The jewels are based on real life birthstones. As such, when equipping as an add-on and if the player has all twelve jewels in their inventory (minus Ore), the jewels are listed in the same order as the birthstones where each gemstone represents a month. Garnet is the birthstone of January and is listed first. Princess Garnet's birthday is listed as 15th of January and holds relevance to the plot.
