The Gargoyle (ガーゴイル, Gāgoiru?), also known as the GARGOYLE, Gargouille, or Avizzard, is a recurring enemy in the Final Fantasy series. They are winged demons, though not all take to the air when encountered. Gargoyles first appeared as low-rank enemies in the original Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy III[]
The Gargoyle appears as an enemy while flying in an airship on the world map. It is weak to Wind.
Final Fantasy IV[]
The Gargoyle appears as an enemy on Mt. Hobs.
Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-[]
The Gargoyle once again appears on Mt. Hobs.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years[]
The Gargoyle is a common enemy that can appear in various locations across several chapters, including once again appearing on Mt. Hobs.
Final Fantasy V[]
The Gargoyle appears as a boss, standing as sentry at the locations where the tablets that seal away the twelve Sealed Weapons lie. Several must be defeated, and it always appears in pairs, and both must be vanquished simultaneously for them to remain defeated.
Final Fantasy VII[]
The Gargoyle appears as an enemy in the Northern Cave and as such are some of the stronger enemies in the game. It starts the battle as a statue and nullifies the first strike against it, only becoming susceptible to damage afterwards, and can cast Level 4 Death.
Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-[]
The Gargoyle is a volatile enemy, flitting around at high speeds to elude gun blasts. Its attack, Supersonic, is always telegraphed by a piercing shriek. They are found in Chapters 10 and 11.
Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-[]
The Gargoyle appears as an enemy in Shinra Manor, as well as the missions Nibelheim II and Underground City.
Final Fantasy IX[]
The appears as an enemy in Ipsen's Castle, taking the form of an immobile stone statue. It appears with an Agares, and will remain docile until the Agares casts Rise on it. The Gargoyle can be defeated by destroying the accompanying Agares before this reanimation occurs, or by using a Soft on it.
Final Fantasy XI[]
The Gargouilles were a family of demon enemies seen only during the Crystal War. The common Gargouille can be encountered as an enemy in Beaucedine Glacier (S).
Distinct from Gargouilles, Gargoyles are a subgenus of the doll family that appears exclusively in Pso'Xja. While they are living statues the lack the demonic features typically associated with the family.
Final Fantasy XII[]
The Gargoyle is a fiend/gargoyle-type enemy found in the Paths of Chained Light area of Golmore Jungle. The Gargoyle, while not strong, can be difficult to defeat due to its high evasion and tendency to form into groups of two or three.
Final Fantasy XIV[]
Gargoyles are a family of powerful voidsent that dual-wield giant cleavers. Gargoyles were inconsistently named both Gargoyle and Gargouille in the early days of A Realm Reborn before they were all standardized as Gargoyle. Along with vodorigas, themselves based on the Final Fantasy XI Gargouille, Gargoyles are among the easier voidsent to summon as they need only a statue as a host.

The Gargoyle is fought during the No Turning Back Main Quest. It is capable of inflicting Stop.
Vagrant Story[]
The Gargoyle appears as an enemy in the Undercity. It is part of the Evil class of monsters.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles[]
The Gargoyle appears as a regular enemy. It is encountered at Moschet Manor and in Rebena Te Ra for all three cycles. It is a flying enemy and is resistant to all types of magic, except for Gravity. The only way of defeating it is to cast Gravity on it, so it is no longer airborne, and attack it with regular or focus attacks.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest[]
The Avizzard is an enemy encountered in the Lava Dome. They are tougher than most other enemies in the Dome, with high HP, status-inflicting attacks, and no weaknesses the player can exploit at this point.
Final Fantasy Adventure[]
The Gargoyle is an enemy found in Davias' Mansion, Glaive Castle, Mt. Rocks, and Undersea Volcano. It has a chance of dropping a Crystal.
The Final Fantasy Legend[]
The Gargoyle is an enemy and also a possible monster that the party's monster unit(s) can transform into. It can be found on the first floor of the Tower.

Etymology[]
Gargoyles were initially ordinary stone statues built on rooftops to let rainwater above flow down to the ground through certain paths. The statues were usually carved as monsters and strange creatures, which later spawned the belief that gargoyles are the guardians of the buildings they live in.
