The Gargantua (ガルガンチュア, Garuganchua?) is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in Final Fantasy VIII.

The Gargantua appears as a boss exclusive to the Advance and Matrix Software releases, encountered in the Dragons' Den bonus dungeon. It uses powerful physical attacks, while its Evil Eye may inflict Slow. It has a small chance of dropping the Growth Egg.

Final Fantasy VIII[]

FF8 Gargantua

The Gargantua appears as a boss encountered in Ultimecia Castle. It begins the battle as a seemingly ordinary group of Vysage, Lefty, and Righty, but upon defeating the three they will reemerge with its full body. The Gargantua counters physical attacks with Counter Twist, which is always a critical hit, and can use its Evil Eye to inflict Slow and Curse. The party can draw the Guardian Force Cerberus from it if they haven't previously acquired it. Defeating it reward a Magic Armlet and restore one of the party's sealed abilities.

Final Fantasy XI[]

Golem (FFXI)

The Gargantua appears as a golem notorious monster encountered in Beaucedine Glacier, potentially replacing one of the Stone Golems in the region. It can drop the Elemental Charm, a neck accessory that increases resistance to most elements. It can later be encountered on Nyzul Isle.

Final Fantasy XV[]

Gargantua FFXV

The Gargantua appears as an enemy encountered in Zegnautus Keep. It can be a dangerous foe when first encountered as Noctis will be alone and only have access to the Ring of the Lucii, all but necessitating the use of Alterna to defeat it.

Etymology[]

Gargantuan, in modern times, means gigantic. Gargantuan is based on the the fictional king Garguantua, who was portrayed as having gigantic physical and intellectual appetites. The satire Gargantua and Pantagruel was written by François Rabelais, considered a great writer for his works of fantasy, satire, the grotesque, and bawdy jokes and songs.
