FFVII Stone Stare

Stone Stare.

Gagighandi uses Stone Stare to always inflict Slow-numb on one character unless the recipient is immune. As Gagighandi has low HP, it will likely be dead by the time petrification kicks in. They have Softs that can be stolen if petrification does occur; they also drop the useful Remedy, a rare item at the point in the game where Gagighandis are first encountered that cures almost any status abnormality.

When fought on the Battle Square it works to have the game mode set to "Wait" rather than "Active" to stop the Slow-numb's countdown from dropping during attack animations, as the player may be using Haste that speeds the countdown up. When on the Battle Square, the player can use Softs, Esuna or White Wind to heal the status before they petrify.

Etymology[]

The start of its Japanese name possibly derives from Basilisk. The Basilisk is a fictional beast that appeared in medieval bestiaries, it is said that a single gaze to their eyes would kill or petrify the observer. It was supposed to appear when a chicken's egg was hatched by a snake or a frog (hence their reptilian appearance). The enemy's Stone Stare ability supports this connection.
