Gabriel Gainsborough is a character mentioned in Final Fantasy VII Remake Trace of Two Pasts. He was the father of Clay Gainsborough and father-in-law of Elmyra Gainsborough. Gabriel Gainsborough ran a family business in Midgar based in the Sector 5 slums as a contractor for the Shinra Electric Power Company based around organizing people. Aerith's house was built by him.
History[]
Gabriel built a family business on organizing people for construction sites, as a contractor for Shinra, and had a reputation as one of the good businesses.[1] Though Midgar's networks of corruption had been taking shape even while the city was under early construction, Gabriel, through a long and bloody process, drove out the extortionate, seedy contractors from Sector 5. He was able to earn Shinra's trust and negotiate better conditions for workers, and day laborers were able to transition to life as business owners with the money they had saved, leading residents of the slums over generations to be grateful for him.[2] Gabriel had a signet fashioned as a pair, the other half in President Shinra's position, to symbolize the goodwill between the Gainsborough family and Shinra.[3]
The business had a triangular hierarchy: he was the "number one" in the business, where the "number twos" were two right-hand men below him, and the "number threes" were a group of six below them each with their own stable of tradesmen and unskilled labor to assign to the number two's projects.[1] The number twos were Clay, his only son,[4] and Meguro,[1] an orphan who Gabriel took in as his own.[5] The number threes included Butch,[6] Rodin,[7] Marvin, Roger, Bauman, and Louis.[8]
At some point, Clay took Carlo Kincaid under his wing and put him on Gabriel's radar.[1] The Sector 5 slums began to resent the Gainsborough family due to how well Shinra treated them. This led Clay to enlist in Shinra, although Gabriel attempted to stop him.[9]
In his final days, Gabriel was looked after by a nurse (who later moved to Kalm after his passing).[10] He was bedridden due to health issues and ultimately, in 1992, two months prior to Aerith Gainsborough's arrival in the Sector 5 slums, passed away. Aerith inherited his room when she was taken in by Elmyra.[11]
