Refine ability learning medicine for GF from items
Description
GFAbl Med-RF (GF ability medicine refiner) is a menu ability in Final Fantasy VIII that allows the player to create items that teach abilities to Guardian Forces; both command (such as Card and Devour) and support abilities (such as junction abilities, stat-boosting abilities, and passive abilities) can be taught from items. GFAbl Med-RF is one of the best refiner abilities in the game, but obtained very late into the game and often requiring rare items.
Obtained[]
The Guardian Force Eden learns GFAbl Med-RF for 30 AP. Eden is drawn from the boss in the bottom of the hidden island on the corner of the world map, or from Tiamat in the final dungeon. If the player removes GFAbl Med-RF with Amnesia Greens, there is no way to get it back.
Mechanics[]
Using GFAbl Med-RF in the Ability menu enables the player to make ability teaching items to the cap of 100 of a single item type.
Use[]
GFAbl Med-RF is used to make some of the most rare and useful items in the game. For example, no GF learns Return Damage natively, and the only way to get a Hundred Needles without Chocobo World is to refine it with GFAbl Med-RF from 100 Cactus Thorns (from Cactuars). With GFAbl Med-RF, the player can have more than one party member with Recover by refining 100 Whispers (from Adamantoises) into a Healing Ring.
Ability x4 is a great ability to have on every party member, learned from a rare Rosetta Stone that the player can manufacture from a Shaman Stone, itself made with Siren's Tool-RF from a Dark Matter.
If the player did not farm Luck-J Scrolls from Odin with a trick, the ways to get it are few and rare, but the player can make them with GFAbl Med-RF from Luck Ups or Dark Matters.
Accelerator teaches Auto-Haste to a GF, an excellent ability to have equipped at all times. Though the player gets three from Kiros's card, the player can also make them from Lightweights (from Vysage) with GFAbl Med-RF.
If the player has the patience, Adamantoises are good enemies to farm items for GFAbl Med-RF, as there are multiple items the player can make from their offerings. Adamantoise is the only encounter on Long Horn Peninsula beaches, north from Dollet.
For the final battle, it is worthwhile to equip all six party members rather than three of them as for any other battle and have as many good abilities and junction abilities available as possible among all six members. Call Shop and Familiar for visiting the Esthar City pet shop from the menu helps with this, as well as Eden's GFAbl Med-RF to make any good ability items from the items the player has available in their inventory.
GFAbl Med-RF is also needed for stat grinding when making stat-booster items with Doomtrain's Forbid Med-RF, as some the items made with GFAbl Med-RF become stat boosters with Forbid Med-RF.
