Reduced to a desolate wasteland by the Calamity, the Carteneau Flats are devoid of all value save for the Allagan ruins scattered across its desolate landscape. With each nation coveting the untold secrets they possess, tensions mounted, threatening to undermine the very foundation of the Eorzean Alliance. To prevent needless bloodshed, while permitting the pursuit of individual interests, the three nations have agreed to a civilized conflict within the borders of Carteneau. To that end, the Grand Companies now call upon regiments of adventurers to help lay claim to this contested domain.

Official description from Frontline preview at Lodestone[1]

The Frontline is a player-versus-players area in Final Fantasy XIV added in Patch 2.3.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Three teams of adventurers, each representing one of the three Grand Companies, will contest for control over the Carteneau Flats. Teams consist of up to 24 players in an alliance, allowing for a grand total of 72 players in a single battle.

Players will be tasked with defending outposts, while laying claim to Allagan ruins. Points will be awarded for occupying points of interests, defeating enemy players, and for slaying monsters in the field.

Instances[edit | edit source]

There are four possible Frontline instances:

Matchmaking[edit | edit source]

Players may queue alone through Duty Finder, or as a pre-made party (provided all members are aligned to the same Grand Company). Depending on how many are in queue, the teams may be arranged as 8vs8vs8, 16vs16vs16, or 24vs24vs24. A Duty Roulette: Frontline option can be used to choose an instance at random.

Due to the very large potential amounts of participants compared to other content, the matchmaking system works very differently from other content. The match will still begin even if not all players accept queue in time (possibly scaling down as needed). There are no required roles for party composition, and players may change their class during a match at their Grand Company's staging area.

Beginning with Patch 3.5, players may register as a "freelancer" to be allocated to a Grand Company at random regardless of current affiliation. This option can be changed under Duty Finder Settings.

Mounts[edit | edit source]

Because of the large size of the Frontline battlefield, players may use their mounts to traverse the fieled. However, taking damage will snare them with the Heavy status effect, and flight cannot be used.

Scoring[edit | edit source]

Each team accumulates Tactical Points by holding objectives and defeating enemy combatants. Once a team reached a required amount, the match ends and victory is declared. If the timer runs out during the match, victory is awarded based on the amount of points earned.

Rewards[edit | edit source]

Players are awarded PvP Experience and Wolf Marks at the end of the match, based on where their team placed:

Place PvP Exp Wolf Marks
1st 400 1000
2nd 300 750
3rd 200 500

Completing a match with Duty Roulette: Frontline also yields 1000 Wolf Marks.

In addition, there are several achievements that can be earned from participation. In particular, gaining 100 victories with a particular Grand Company will award a Warsteed mount bearing the Company banner.
