Fran is a permanent party member in Final Fantasy XII, who joins with Balthier after the events in the Royal Palace of Rabanastre. She starts as a long-ranged fighter, although the player may equip her with any weapon as long as they acquire the appropriate licenses. Even though Fran's default weapon is a bow, and she has bow licenses already learned, Fran and Balthier have the longest bow action time. In practice this is negligible. Fran's beginning licenses are close to several Quickenings.
In the original version, Fran has low stats compared to the other party members and is the only one to not have a particular stat in which she excels. Fran's Magick Power is particularly low, second-lowest to Balthier. Her Vitality is also low, being the second-lowest after Basch, and her Strength is the second-lowest after Penelo. Her MP exceeds Basch's and Balthier's, but is the lowest of the three female party members.
In the Zodiac versions, her stats have been tweaked and she now has the highest Vitality out of all the party members at level 99.
Fran can be built in any way without major drawbacks.
After winning a boss battle the currently alive members of the active party perform a victory pose depending on what weapon they are equipped with.

Quests[]
Fran and Balthier join Vaan in the Garamsythe Waterway after the events at the Royal Palace. Fran can be placed in the party leader position in the overworld and in dungeons, but only Vaan is controllable in settled areas. Talking to viera NPCs with Fran as party leader yields unique dialogue.
In the boss battle aboard Shiva, Fran automatically enters Berserk.
Behind the scenes[]
The Japanese name of Fran's Shatterheart Quickening (咬撃氷狼波, Kōgeki Hyōrōha?, lit. Biting Ice Wolf Wave) is a reference to the Crush Accessory (咬撃氷狼破, Kōgeki Hyōrōha?, lit. Biting Ice Wolf Break) ability from Final Fantasy Tactics. The final kanji for both looks similar, and they are pronounced the same.
The animation is reminiscent of Shiva's summon animation from many games, where Fran appears to encase enemies in ice and then break it with a blow of her kiss.
