Let's see...Search no longer takes you directly to the page you're looking for instead taking you to the results page, therefore making redirects obsolete and making it harder to access special pages, all while adding to the amount of time it take for you to get to the article you want to get to.

None of this would be a problem if they hadn't gotten rid of Go / Search when setting up Oasis. It's pretty obvious they didn't beta-test the new search bar either; it breaks Monobook search, among other things. I remember back when I was a newbie who happened across Forum:User talk pages next to be Facebookised and wondered why Wikia was going through with a change with so much negative feedback. But that seems to be what we should expect, and we should be surprised if they install a feature we like; not vice versa.
I think it's better. I'm gonna be sooooooo alone in this opinion. :D

Ruh-roh. Not again. So, what happens if we search, "Shinryu (Final Fantasy X)"? Does it come up with a list of searches? Greeeeaaaaaaat. That's *really* gunna help my crappy internet.
To go straight to article you can select an option from the autocomplete list. If you type faster than the autocomplete finishes, you can instead type in the url.

... That's complicated. Ugh. Annoying.

Clicking on one of the autocomplete results takes me to the results page, unless this is just a monobook problem? Also, tpying in the url defeats the convenience of the search bar entirely.
|
I type in the url but I'm crazy, but that's the thing, it wasn't ever a proper search bar in Oasis, just a go to bar that just says "search" on it. If there was no go to it would find squat all. Now it's a search bar, but I'd like the go to option still to exist, just because sometimes the autocomplete is slow. But for my navigation habits it's less a problem because I'm crazy and type in the url.

I can see this benefiting small wikis without a lot of redirects. Wikia always seems to favor small wikis, so that's not surprising. Yet no matter how many complaints they get, they aren't gonna listen. Because that's simply not what Wikia does.
Part of the reason we have so many redirects is because the search was a useless piece of shit that finds nothing unless there is a go to option. Here's hoping it'll be less crap in the future. In the old version the only way to do a real search instead of go to would be to type Special:Search...in the search bar...I mean that's pretty bonkers isn't it. Wikia didn't make message wall mandatory probably because of the complaints so maybe complaining has some effect somewhere! Never give up Catuse! ;)

Yeah the old way was really weird.
I have mixed feelings about it. I also liked the older way better because Wikia simply cut the Go feature. I think now we should give twice as much importance to linking and navigation templates. - Henryacores^ 21:33, April 29, 2012 (UTC)
Redirects still work. Just suk. Type in "Ignore Weather" and search it, and then the top result will be the page it's meant to redirect too. Obviously, it's unusable by viewers, since if they're searching "Ignore Weather", they aren't that likely to know it is "Light Step" in other games, and thus they'll likely ignore the top result anyway. I think redirects are meant to come up as a suggestion when searching, but they don't. JBed 21:48, April 29, 2012 (UTC)

Per w:User_blog:Dopp/New_Global_Search,_plus_Updates_to_Local_Search and w:User_blog:Daniel_Baran/Search_Developments:_Big_Picture#comm-383242 it's pretty clear Wikia ain't changing things back to the way they were, but they made several major improvements in exchange, such as to the global search, and are currently working on the redirect problem. Luckily, there's code to change the search bar back to Go/Search like it was in Monobook. // ****************************************************** // * SearchGoButton - Version 1.3 * // * * // * Script by Eladkse * // ****************************************************** function SearchGoButton() { if ($('#WikiaSearch').length) { $('#WikiaSearch button.secondary').before('<button class="secondary" style="right: 43px;" name="go" value="Go"><img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIABAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAEALAAAAAABAAEAQAICTAEAOw%3D%3D" class="sprite search" height="17" width="21" style="background-image:url(http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/dev/images/d/d5/GoArrow.png); background-position:0; height:auto;"></button>'); $('#WikiaSearch input[type="submit"]').attr('value', 'Go').attr('name', 'go'); $('#WikiaSearch input[type="text"]').css('width', '208px').css('padding-right', '87px'); } else if ($('#search-v2-form').length) { $('#search-v2-form button').before('<input type="submit" value="Go" name="go">').after('<button type="submit" class="wikia-button" id="search-v2-button" value="Go" name="go" style="margin-right:10px;"><img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIABAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAEALAAAAAABAAEAQAICTAEAOw%3D%3D" class="sprite search" height="17" width="21" style="background-image:url(http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/dev/images/6/65/GoArrow2.png); background-position:0; height:auto; width:20px;"></button>'); $('#search-v2-form input[type="text"]').attr('name', 'search').css('width', '466px').css('margin-right', '10px'); } } addOnloadHook(SearchGoButton);I found this in a comment on one of the blog posts, though it breaks ToU to put it in the MediaWiki JS file. Until Wikia finishes their changes to the search feature, everyone put that code in their local JS.
