What with the new Wiki Blogs launching shortly, I was wondering what kind of rules the FFWiki will inforce regarding them. What's everyone's opinions, suggestions, and thoughts on the Wiki Blogs?
To be honest, as it is now, I find that the blog index looks absolutely horrible and that they are launching the function way to soon as there are several bugs in the coding in regardless of what browser you are using. That aside, I think the only rule that would be enforced is "Don't double-post". The blog serve the function that we've assigned the fora and user sub-pages. If people desire to use the blogs as well, then pick one place to write your entry, not two. E.g. any fan-stories should be posted in either the blog area or in the Sanctuary of Zi'tah, but not both. However, since I'm just "on-call", I don't have the final word on this.
Can't really add to what Hecko said. Got to see how this pans out. Personally I hate blogs, but I can't force people not to use a (completely unnecessary) feature. We're a wiki, why do we need blogs?

Isn't this almost exactly the same as our forums? I know most other wikis don't have our glorious talk bubbles, so really, the only pro would be the avatars available. This is like creating a whole new forum space... I don't really like it.

Soon enough this wiki will be crowded with all kinds of Blog junk. Whatever. First of all, we should probably find a way to cut this off the Recent Changes, because every entry and every comment is counted as a New Page.

I hate the Masthead and want it to die. Perhaps it will sod off and obligingly perish in a corner if we opt out of blogs? It doesn't look like anyone who has commented in this forum so far actually wants blogs. In fact, if you have a peek at the opt-out list here, it looks like most other wikis don't want it either! Category: Killit killit kiiillllll iiiittt!
I like the masthead, and you can change the color and make it smaller if you want. /* halving the size of the new Masthead; it's only on Monaco now, but who knows */ div#user_masthead h2 {display:none; } div#user_masthead img { height:20px !important; width:20px !important;} That halves the size of the masthead(found from M.mendel on wikia). Here are the various colors for other monaco skins. They blend in better than that grey. Add to your monaco.css page. Fake edit: And hey, maybe you understand CSS better than I do, and know how to completely remove it. Real edit (19:13, 1 July 2009 (UTC)): Also, there's no (?) masthead on Monobook.

The Bast'ead is pointless. The only thing you can do on it that we couldn't already do is go to the blogs. Funnily enough, I'm getting the impression that a hell of a lot of people don't want the blogs anyway.
In other news: /* Remove the Bast'ead entirely. This blessed relief is brought to you by Sorceror Nobody */ div#user_masthead {display:none; } It gets rid of the Bast'ead completely, with no repurcussions for anything else as far as I can see. -- -- -- EDIT: With the Bast'ead gone, I feel more charitable towards blogs. But BlueHighwind is completely right: First of all, we should probably find a way to cut this off the Recent Changes, If that can be sorted out, I'm willing to let the blogs live.
Yeah, but I still like it. That is actually really obvious, hah. I like the small masthead the best, though, so yay super copy-pasting skills.

It won't clog the recent changes if you just go to the button above the recent changes and pick main, so you only see main space edits. Oh, tell people to not use it, and tell them to just link to outside blogs.
What is this Masthead? I use Monobook and thus don't see it. Can I get a screen cap here. Also, I was unaware you could ask to have the blog feature removed. Should we hold a vote here to see if we should ask for its removal?

I vote against it. I pointed out up above that every comment and Blog Entry is treated as a new page on the Recent Changes. Its going to get in the way really fast, especially if somebody writes something especially controversial. And its not like we don't already have like fifty or so methods for Users to express themselves already.
@Diablo, We can't really just do a main page poll (it's not reliable enough), so we'd probably have to set up a proper page just for the vote. We could even hold the vote in someone's blog, just for the sheer hilarious (slight exaggeration there) irony of it...
- P.S. I did give a link to "Masthead" above. I didn't know it was called the masthead until I found that. I originally planned to call it the "horrible invasive nasty-coloured bar across the top" or some such :P
@BlueHighwind: I couldn't agree more. Still if any significant number of people do want it, I'm happy to let them have it on condition that this recent changes issue is resolved. Which of course it probably won't be >_> -- Sorceror Nobody 14:12, 2 July 2009 (UTC) Template:ILHI
I don't see anything wrong with it. I don't really think something like a blog is necessary, but attracting more users to the "community" part doesn't really hurt the content that's here. People will be here more, and thus might do more stuff with the content part while they're here. It's not like it's impossible to have two tabs open.

Getting off-topic, but re: needed work, some wikis have a list of articles in need of work. Since a lot of "needing work" articles aren't necessarily in categories that make such needs clear*, we could try having a similar list. Alternatively, we could just create a category for "articles in need of work", and a matching template for the articles in question.

I've already told Uberfuzzy that the blog comment system is somewhat annoying, and suggested a few ways to change it, like putting all comments not as their own pages, but as posts within a "User blog talk" page or something, so they are grouped recent changes. Apart from that, I don't see many other options for changing the system.
