Good news! I now have access to the FFWiki Twitter account.
As for volunteers, I know Tia-Lewise, Catuse167 and ScatheMote have volunteered to help with the account. What I will do is be on the IRC every evening this week and if you three are on, I'll give you the password. Alternatively if you have a twitter account, tell me what it is and follow the @FFWiki account. I will DM the password to you.
I've also created an email account as well: firstname.lastname@example.org (for some reason ffwiki was taken. Nuts.)
We do have some things to think about, for example what will we actually talk about on Twitter. Off the top of the head, the following is a list we probably will all agree on:-
A list of items what we need more discussion on how to implement, if we implement at all
Scathe and I are on the IRC now if you're still about, Jeppo.
I will hopefully be on the IRC when you are in order to get the password. Just to know, there is the Youtube email account, ffwiki.ff at gmail. If you want to use that one instead of the one you made for consistency, there it is.
I think we should also post LP updates, since that's also one of the things that update regularly. Maybe we could do birthdays? It may be too informal.
Random Article of the day may not be necessary if we're doing all the other above things. We'll probably still have an update every day. And with featured articles, we don't really need a random article of the day.Quizzes should be done maybe once a day? Maybe less frequently? There should be some reward for getting it right. I'm unsure what it should be, though.
I've brought up the subject of birthdays before and it seemed to hit a bad note, but if it was FF characters' birthdays instead? Might be more appropriate. Of course, LP updates are pretty much necessary because it's done a great job so far gathering knowledge of the Wiki.
I'll try to get on IRC around 2200-0000 UTC tonight and see what I can do.
I'm not sure about the random article thing. Maybe make it more like "did you know...?" and it links to a relevant article? Quiz answers could also link to relevant articles.
Maybe we could have a leaderboard of sorts published on the wiki as a project page. Post a question every so often and the user who tweets the right answer first gets a point. Then later we can tweet the answer along with a link to the article where one could find it. So basically we could have bragging rights as the prize.
While we could have a "did you know...?", I think we don't need it if we use quizzes instead. Same maybe about the Random Article of the Day.User Arenas is just something I plucked out to see what everyone thought of it. I don't particularly agree nor disagree about it.
Okay, so as we all know, the Sitenotice has a link to @FFWiki in it. However, I recently found out about a Twitter widget (and that apparently adding Twilight fan-drivel to your front page is "best practice"... though that is the Twilight Wiki after all... -_- but I digress) which allows us to add Twitter to a page. Yes, it works in Monobook, and you can see a test of what @FFWiki would look like here (need admin rights to activate it).
Not sure if this would be more effective than linking in the site notice, because the Twitter thing would only be on one page. If we could get it on the site notice (and not look terrible), the twitter feed would be on the bottom right of Oasis on all pages and fairly visible, and could be dismissed for those who are not interested in our Twitter feed.If we can't get it to work on the sitenotice or it doesn't look good on the sitenotice, I don't see much point it adding this to the already overcrowded main page.
If it's a constant feed, then yeah, we need a place on the homepage for it to fit without impacting on everything else; we've already had to rework it for the FFWiki LP's spot. Can we have a page on its own where the feed can go, so users can go there as they wish? Of course, we can keep the sitenotice up, I have no problem with that.
I would not personally be in favour of this, as I agree with Scathe that the main page is already overcrowded. Another point is that the widget is entirely blocked for users using certain filters on ad-blockers and is also blocked by script blockers such as NoScript and Ghostery, which reduces the impact and negates the point to an extent.
I have known about this for a while, having seen it on another wiki, but I personally don't think it's needed as we have to think what we tweet about: Shinra News, Featured Article, Featured Image, DNC, Let's Play... all of these are already on the main page. That in itself would make putting the Twitter widget on the Main Page redundant. The only things we tweet about that's not on the Main Page are the weekly Question Time and the occasional reply to our followers. I don't feel that that as reason enough to warrant an extra block for Twitter in my personal opinion.
