I have a suggestion. We should categorize pictures based on its artists. Is there any problem with that?
What do you mean? Like, making categories for Yoshitaka Amano, Tetsuya Nomura, etc?
Yup. That's pretty much it. Except that the names of the category would be like "Artworks by <name of artist here>".

Well, this sounds good to me, but I don't frequently deal with images, so I guess we need feedback from others too.
I don't know about this. While categorizing by artist makes sense, it seems like an arduous task to categorize well over 1000 images with categories that all almost the same as game categories (since each game generally only has artwork by one artist). And also, some of the images we simply don't know who drew them (e.g. this or this).

If someone was extremely interested in working on this project, I don't see the harm in it. Like Scathe said, I'd be very careful when assigning artists to pictures that aren't obviously or proven to be created by a specific artist.
Not that there isn't a use, but given the large number of art on the wiki that can't be categorised, not to mention screenshots that don't fall neatly into categories, I suggest instead that pictures be categorised by type e.g. battle background, cutscene screenshots, world/field map screenshots, battle screenshots, ability screenshots and the like.
Yes. Categorising by artist for artworks is a brilliant idea. However, it depends how we go about it. Since Amano and Nomura both have done a lot. We'd have to do something like "Final Fantasy VII Nomura Artwork". Which sounds an alright idea, but the "Final Fantasy VII Artwork" folder itself works better.
I suppose we could just pipe in the categories. So an FFVII Nomura artwork would be [[Category:Nomura Artwork|07]]. And we would just use the(/my -- currently unofficial) game extensions for each of them. I say unofficial, I created them when I did a lot of work on categories (which I never finished).
This is definitely not the longest task the wiki has done. Far from it. Scathe, think, all you have to do is going to each game's Artwork image folder (which aren't even that big) and categorise each one. Unless I'm not underthinking this task, I could do it all in a day, easy. This is one of the things that take a lot more time discussing how to do it than actually doing it.
If we don't know who the artist is, I think an easy "Unidentified Artist" category would be fine. And then we could identify them at later dates. 88.109.167.144 14:00, April 3, 2010 (UTC)
- Or don't categorize them at all. ララ・ルナ・ステラ姫 09:10, April 4, 2010 (UTC)
- But we are a database. The category system has to be used to navigate throughout the entire mainspace, and imagespace too. Categorisation by artist is hardly a trivial thing we should overlook. Not even considering this up until now seems a bit weird. 88.109.199.147 23:12, April 4, 2010 (UTC)
- I like this idea. I'd gladly categories all of Yoshida's work at the very least. Nothing like taking a stroll through your favourite artist's work while you work on the wiki. Diablocon 23:45, April 4, 2010 (UTC)
