- I know Red is going to lose, but Christ, the only disadvantage he has is not being the MC of his own game. He's a powerful fighter and decent mage, his losses are quite possibly the most real and most tragic of any character in the series, and I think he's quite frankly a better character. Anyone citing him as a cliché is totally disregarding the depth he was given in that under his act of being so adult, he's still quite young and inexperienced. Bugenhagen's death and the aftermath made me feel worse than him than for any other character in the series bar none, because it's clear he just lost the most important person in his entire life. He's also, for the purposes of his home game, the last of his kind, and his lifespan means he'll watch everyone else grow old and die long before him. And despite all that, he does what every other character in the series doesn't and refuses to go emo.
Compared to that, Squall is twice as flat a character and cliché in triplicate. Bluestarultor BSA 03:14, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

@Bluestar: Your rant made me laugh, so I'm going to respond. First off, for the cliche bit I was referring to the species only; they both fit into cliche characters, but almost every book, movie or game has a token talking animal in it somewhere, and that really annoys me.
And he is cliche: Father/father figure sacrifices himself for character, but character for some reason holds grudge against father, until he learns the truth, after which he suddenly developed a deep respect for father. It's been done a million times over, but then so has every other notable character plot.
And the last-of-a-kind, coupled with the watch-everyone-else-grow-old is just about as overdone. The most obvious (but by no means the only one) is the Doctor from Doctor Who.
To end: I like Red XIII, I just like Squall better. And the token talking animal thing annoys me. Likeacupcake 04:44, October 29, 2010 (UTC)
- I'd really like to know what books, movies, and games are in your library, because he stands as the only character on four legs in the entire series and one of only a handful I've come across in games as a whole. I mean I'm not arguing that anthropomorphic animals don't happen; they've been a staple of stories since the written word.
- I'm not arguing that any of it was never done before, for that matter, but that's why there's a trope to the effect of "TV Tropes will ruin your life." Eveything's been done before in all permutations. In Red's case, it's just that so much of it happened to him that I couldn't help but feel for the guy. In fact, Bugenhagen's death had roughly triple the impact on me that Aerith's did simply because Red didn't have anyone else and was not equipped to handle it. Cloud still had Tifa, and barely even knew Aeris when she died.
- For that matter, Red's character had the greatest amount of foreshadowing out of anyone in the game. There were hints as to his underlying immaturity before the reveal and he clearly had issues with mortality set up long before he actually lost Bugenhagen.
- We just have different tastes. I personally think Red is a much more meaningful character compared to Squall, who is such an emotional brick it takes him most of the game to realize he's in love with Rinoa when it's supposed to be a love story! They're hugging straight in the logo, for crying out sideways! That's like promising a kid ice cream and putting the ice cream right there under a glass bowl and then making him eat a seven-course meal of nothing but broccoli before he can have any. Maybe he'll get to it eventually, but it'll be all melted by then and not really all that great and probably not all that much worth the effort.
- Mind you, I actually liked 8 better than 7, but Squall has to be one of the least interesting characters of the series. Bluestarultor BSA 05:53, October 29, 2010 (UTC)
- Pick up a title of the majority of series and you will find a talking animal, or a human-animal hybrid (I throw them in the same basket)
- I admit I didn't really pay much attention to Red XIII's plot, but I will say I did feel sorry by the end of it, and Aerith's death never really upset me, just annoyed me (all that grinding... gone -_- )
- Crying out sideways? That's a new one. And I like broccoli. Broccoli and cauliflower with a nice cheese sauce... dam; now I'm hungry. Anyway; I've seen Red XIII's plot and character more times then I care to count, Squall had no development, so on that plane, they are equals to me. So it came down to the most predominant facts; the talking animal bores me, so I put a score for the human, combs are a pathetic choice for a weapon (happens often in this series) and the Gunblade is at least awesome enough to make up for its strangeness, and the Lion Heart limit break was more powerful then Red XIII's.
- So in the end it is a matter of tastes, but I thought you at least deserved an explanation for my choices (as that rant was very obviously directed at me, and made me laugh when I read it), and my tastes led me to choose Squall over Red this time around Likeacupcake 07:18, October 29, 2010 (UTC)
- Hey, no hard feelings. I may have come off sharper than I intended, which is why I tend to abuse emotes. For reference, I consider animal characters on four legs distinct from animal characters on two, simply because animal characters on two are pretty well ubiquitous in any setting where racial or cultural issues are being discussed (I could do a whole paper on that). To keep the explanation short, anthropomorphic characters are an easy stand-in anytime a dev wants to explore things like racism because in our politically correct world, doing it with actual humans of different races would generate mass outcry. Animal characters on four legs are much, much rarer, which is why I always considered Red special in that regard, especially because they actually don't do the racism bit with him. He's treated mostly the same as all the human characters, which, given his appearance, is pretty forward-thinking on the cast's part. Even in best cases, four-legged animals tend to be treated as mascots, but he doesn't get shuffled under that, either. I have trouble calling a character "token" when it's handled maturely and would rather classify Red as "different" or "unique."
- So yeah, we just weigh things differently. I think we both see the same things in both characters. I just happen to think while Squall is a passable lead, Red is just much more interesting in that there's more under the surface. Squall has the occasional good line, and his stoicism and personal sense of honor are in themselves admirable, but the guy is pretty stunted when you manage to break down his walls, whereas Red actually has something more under there that they've explored through the entire Compilation and there's still enough left unresolved in his story and growth potential to warrant him getting his own game. Bluestarultor BSA 15:02, October 29, 2010 (UTC)
Wow, this is really close. I thought Squall would win but it looks like all the FF7 fans are gathering under one flag. I of course voted purely because I like Squall, XIII was alright too. YKProductions 03:01, November 4, 2010 (UTC)
