Hey, all. I'm still alive! Been poking around the FF7 Remake pages hoping to finally play the thing (ah, life), and, to get to the point, white icons don't show up very well on white backgrounds. I could probably do something to change to Dark Mode, but that's just a personal bandaid for me, not the 99% of viewers who don't log in to look up info and are now seeing baffling spaces all over the place.
There are a couple options: 1) we do something tasteful to darken the pages, or 2) we find a way to maybe throw an outline on all the images. Darkening the pages probably is going to be easier and people might be appreciative of having something a bit easier on the eyes than "the blinding light of the sun" for a gaming wiki. - If the background is too light and should be a little darker than #FFF, that's worth discussing, but it won't help here: Making the background dark enough to make the icon on Blade Burst (VII Remake) visible would require that the background be too dark for a dark font. It should not be hard, however, to update Module:Icon to allow for shadowed icons. I'll take care of this after work today or this weekend. Cat (meow ∙ hunt) 13:31, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
I love a light theme! It's not any brighter than like BBC news or whatever normal sites people visit. Only thing I would change is that the image up top seems like cold colour tone, whereas the tables' background etc is warm colour tone, so it clashes a bit. To my personal eyes.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 21:44, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- We're a little limited on options for that one, the Endwalker location/concept art that's warmer in tone has a lot more colour variation in smaller areas, making it harder to read, and the table stuff, well, I asked around if people wanted the current scheme or grey, and this is what won out.
- If it wasn't for the fact that we have two theme slots, I probably would have gone dark with this, there's a lot of good dark art for Endwalker, turns out that's what happens when 1/3 of the game the theme's based on is set on the moon, but as it stands we have a light slot and a dark slot, and we'd rather keep the previous theme, which was designed as dark, in place to avoid having to double our workload, so that left the light slot for this one. -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 22:00, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- I think we could still do something tasteful that isn't pure white. Depending on what looks best with the infoboxes, I would recommend maybe Cornsilk, LemonChiffon, Bisque, AntiqueWhite, OldLace, PapayaWhip, or BlanchedAlmond. Bluestarultor (talk) 00:53, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
I have just updated Module:Icon to allow for shadowing icons. You can see what this looks like at Cure (VII Remake) because I have shadowed the icons of all spells and weapons from FFVII. I don't know if anything else needs shadowing. This only has an effect in light mode, and can be implemented by setting a flag shadowed=true
in the icon data set, see eg Module:Icon/data/FFVIIR/Spell. Cat (meow ∙ hunt) 01:32, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
- Looks good! Accessories and armor also have icons, like in the infobox for Gozu Drive.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 17:31, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
