FFWiki Plays Final Fantasy X: The Trailer

Hello everybody. After much discussion, the next LP after FFVIII and FF Adventure will be Final Fantasy X, a decision which was pretty much made by default unfortunately. The purpose of this forum is to discuss what direction we want to take this LP. After all, this is your LP.

Recording will start by August, and the first episode will be out by about September, so we have plenty of time to discuss what we want to do. Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 22:35, May 23, 2013 (UTC)

Polls

A bit of background. The game that will be played is the European PAL version, which is essentially the same as the International version in Japan. That means I will be covering the Dark Aeons and Penance. What PAL also does is give the option of using the Expert Sphere Grid. So the first vote is:-

This poll is now closed.
What sphere grid do you want me to choose?
Standard Sphere Grid - 10
Expert Sphere Grid - 5

The next poll is a bit of spoilers - it involves a certain cutscene of Operation Mi'ihen. Let me cut to the chase and ask you...

This poll is now closed.
Who do you want to kick the bucket?
Luzzu - 9
Gatta - 15

Next, Kimahri only has a small section of the sphere grid to use (and if the Expert grid is chosen, he barely has any sphere grid at all!) so since Kimahri can be trained in lots of ways, I'll leave the decision up to you.

Bear in mind that if Auron is chosen, I will have to go partway up Tidus's path first, as on both grids Auron's is the only path I cannot reach directly from Kimahri's section.

This poll is now closed.
What job shall I turn Kimahri into?
Warrior/Time Mage (Tidus's path) - 4
Ranger (Wakka's path) - 0
Black Mage (Lulu's Path) - 1
Thief (Rikku's path) - 11
White Mage (Yuna's path) - 2
Samurai (Auron's path) - 6

I'm going to be using all seven characters for the vast majority of the game, but for the next poll you will be choosing which three characters you want me to primarily use to defeat the enemies in the Monster Area, and when tackling the Dark Aeons and Penance. I'm leaving Yuna out because I need her to be on stand-by for summoning duties. Also the three characters you choose and Yuna may not always be the only characters I'll use - I may still have to resort to using other characters for overdrives and the like, but which of the six characters do you want me to especially train to take down the strongest of enemies?

The above polls will close when I reach that particular point of the game during recording. If there is anything else you want me to poll, please comment below! Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 22:35, May 23, 2013 (UTC)

Next up: Affection Mechanics. Click the link if you want to know the ins and outs of this mechanic. Basically, whenever I need to make a decision (e.g. who to talk to first), I'll consult this poll and choose the one that's winning. I'll try my best to get the character you choose to take part in the affected cutscenes, but there are no guarantees.

Splitting the Episodes

The next thing to talk about is arguably the most important. I'm guessing this LP will be about 30 hours long. I'm thinking about, if time is on my side, I can churn out one episode (one hour's gameplay) per week. But what is the best way to split the episodes up? Possible choices are four 15 minute parts/episode, three 20 minute parts or two 30-minute parts. What do you guys think? Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 22:35, May 23, 2013 (UTC)

I'd prefer to keep the four-part episodes we have now, just extend them past the 15-minute mark if needed. Drake Clawfang (talk) 09:45, May 25, 2013 (UTC)
Keep update length/schedule it as it is. If you can only manage 1 hr/week, we should be airing less than that so we can have a backlog. (Although I suppose the 20 min length would also be fine in that case, just don't go for half hour episodes) -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 09:48, May 25, 2013 (UTC)
Well, I've split episode one (the "test" LP) into four parts - the lengths are 15:08, 16:58, 15:40 and 19:01. although the fourth part will be extended further when I add the "In the next episode..." teaser, it will still be less than 20 minutes. Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 13:45, May 25, 2013 (UTC)
I hate next episode teasers. Jus' sayin'. 2.102.229.17 13:49, May 25, 2013 (UTC)

I'm going to go ahead and say that the way we divide up episodes now, in four fifteen minute chunks, is pretty dumb. We record them in a single hour, we should produce them as final products in that same method. Just upload an hour every week. If I could redo FFVIII, I would have done it in single hours, but I only realized I had screwed up by roughly Disc 2, and by that point I couldn't change or else suffer a discontinuity. And I'm insane enough that I'll keep doing something wrong for all eternity as long as its uniform. ----BlueHighwind 01:22, July 13, 2013 (UTC)

The main advantage of splitting it up is more frequent output – videos every couple of days rather than every week. The problem with this is simple: each episode is contained, and so having only part of a video up for a couple of days means there's a distinct cliffhanger in content until the next part goes up. Being a late arrival to watching the VI and MQ LPs, the episodes were all present and complete, and so I wasn't bothered by any cuts, but it was abundantly clear to me just how irritating such cuts might be on the drip-feed of the update frontier. All in all, the bonus of more frequent updates is rather countered by the fact that you get a dissatisfying sense of incompleteness until all four parts are up, making waiting the whole week arguably preferable and rendering the splitting redundant.
On the other hand, more parts means more opportunities for amusing video titles :P Honestly, I think the best compromise might be to still split them, but only into two or maybe three parts. And the splits should be as natural as is conceivably possible – obviously I'm aware that is done to some extent already, but the fewer parts there are, the longer they are, and the more variance it's possible to have in where the divide is without the parts ending up wildly different lengths -- Sorceror Nobody Flan 14:04, July 13, 2013 (UTC)

Really guys? Expert Sphere Grid is way more fun. JBed (talk) 22:44, May 23, 2013 (UTC)

Why not just have Kimahri learn Steal and Use first, then send him through Tidus/Auron's grid? There's no rule against following more than one path, is there? SidVI 10:07, May 25, 2013 (UTC)

No, but that would make it more complicated when it gets to endgame. Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 13:40, May 25, 2013 (UTC)
??? unless there is something I'm forgetting about with the standard Sphere Grid, hardly. 2.102.229.17 13:47, May 25, 2013 (UTC)
What I mean is I don't really want to jump around different sections of the sphere grid willy-nilly. If the Expert grid was chosen, fine. But for the Standard grid, it will present a lot of backtracking and requires a lot of key spheres that would instead be used for unlocking sections where no character can realistically claim early on in the game. Adding the potential of path-hopping is impossible to add into the poll.
Besides, I can always use Special Spheres to learn Steal even if Kimahri doesn't go down Rikku's path. Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 13:56, May 25, 2013 (UTC)

I'm very surprised people went for Standard. Personally I find it boring! Now I'm kinda regretting voting to make Kimahri Auron#2 now I thought about the Stealing... Tia-LewiseRydia - Young battle 18:42, May 29, 2013 (UTC)

Boys, I'm so incredibly sorry I couldn't make it tonight. I had no idea my mic had broken. However, I have secured a lovely new mic that Adam bought in PC World last month and he is letting me borrow, so please put my name down for the next recording and I can assure you I will be there, fully working components and annoying British accent and all!
