I have created this thread to discuss how we are going to go about re-establishing our (FFWiki's) Facebook page and Twitter feed. Hopefully, once we have decided how it is going to run, we will trial it out for a month or two, and if it is popular we will use it as a means of both notifying our userbase on developments Final Fantasy and the wiki, and also use it to possibly help introduce new people to this site. Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 19:35, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

Checklist

  1. Obtain the password for the Facebook and Twitter accounts.
  2. Discuss how we are going to use Facebook and Twitter.
  3. Decide on who will update Facebook and Twitter.
  4. Decide on a few rules and regulations.
  5. Discuss what the Facebook and Twitter pages would look like.

Point #1 Discussion

Obtain the password for the Facebook and Twitter accounts

We think Bluer has it. Hopefully he would be kind enough to supply it to one of us. If not, we can always create a brand new page/twitter account. Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 19:35, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

Good to see us going over to social network platform. Unfortunately, I am not responsible for the Facebook account. As for Twitter, if there's community consensus and someone's ready to handle the responsibility for it, just reach me over the talk page. BLUER一番 00:52, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
You wouldn't happen to know who was in charge of the Facebook stuff, would you? -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 07:22, June 19, 2012 (UTC)

Point #2 Discussion

Discuss how we are going to use Facebook and Twitter

The ideas already mentions from the Quiz Question Thread are as follows. We could update whenever the Featured Article, Featured Image and the DNC changes. We could also update whenever there is a update on Shinra News, tweet about birthdays for characters and Final Fantasy staff and maybe even post some interesting trivia tidbits every so often. Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 19:35, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

I'm not entirely keen on notifying people on character birthdays as only very few characters actually have birthdays set in real world calendar (I think that only PS1 era has them, and Tactics series). Aside of that, these are good suggestions; there's nothing more to add, I think.—Kaimi >♂ FFXIII - Sprite-AtkVanille - FFXIII - Sprite-ShockVanille - Discussion - FFXIII - Sprite-CrysVanille 19:50, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

Sounds like it'd run much like the main page here then. But an advance notification elsewhere is always useful, particularly for people who prefer links rather than going from site to site manually. I particularly like the idea of birthdays (we have a birthday today, by the way!). It fits in with trivia, which people like. EDIT CONFLICT - I think Jeppo meant character birthdays, Tia. Though I wouldn't say no to user birthdays, as long as they weren't given a lot of emphasis.C A T U S E 19:49, June 18, 2012 (UTC)
This whole matter originate because of Kelt's comment on the Quiz Question thread about how we could use Twitter to have a quiz all our own. Are we still going through with that?C A T U S E 19:49, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

I oppose birthdays to the max! 79.69.196.169 19:46, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

AND ANOTHER ONE - Figured as much.C A T U S E 19:49, June 18, 2012 (UTC)
Well if you figured as much then you can obviously clearly see the flaws with the idea. 79.69.196.120 20:04, June 18, 2012 (UTC)
Not that it matters, since Kaimi already shot down the idea.C A T U S E 20:31, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

I never said I wanted user birthdays, I was just whoring the fact that it's DSS's birthday. Tia-LewiseRydia - Young battle 19:51, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

Which I appreciate greatly, dear. :P - +DeadlySlashSword+ 19:58, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

Another thing we could have would be like tweets to do with the day... like HP Wiki just had there something for Father's Day. Like...today is the cherry blossom festival day in Japan, did you know that many attacks in the Final Fantasy series refer to this event, including Lightning's Zantetsuken and Yojimbo's Zanmato? Or you know, something better. Or "celebrating" games' 10 year anniversaries.

I still like the quiz idea too.Keltainentoukokuu 23:12, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

I agree with using the social media to inform the public of DNC updates, Shinra News stories, as well as the FA and FI.

Maybe for the quiz idea would could have a random FF question a day? Or maybe put in a new Did You Know…? every day? Other random events (wiki treasure hunt sounded amazing) might help boost readership and keep people interested in the social media. I think we should try and offer something new in the social media that the main page doesn't offer; if the Facebook/Twitter were exactly the same as the main page updates, there wouldn't be much incentive to check the social media pages. Of course, we can still have the main page-esque updates. ScatheMote 02:20, June 19, 2012 (UTC)

Scathe, there's a reason I have "liked" 50 or so musicians on Facebook. It means I only have to go to one place to receive updates instead of each of their websites individually every second of every day. Instead I only have to be on one website every second of every day.
If we give all the updates to Facebook and Twitter it will help people who don't visit the FFWiki front page regularly and it will still drive in more traffic.
I am against any sort of "additional things" to social media. The wiki is a large website. It is both a wiki and a fan-site. Twitter and Facebook just allow us to branch out more easily to more people, there is nothing we can do on those sites that we can't do here. Why do work for things that are only seen by those who are a part of social networks when there are regular users on the wiki who are not subscribed to the page on the social network? 79.69.204.201 12:46, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
I like the quiz idea as well. I also partially agree with JBed in that everything we post or tweet about on the social media sites should be on the wiki in some way. Having said that the beauty of twitter and Facebook means that we can be a lot more interactive and informal than we are on the wiki. For example we can retweet anything interesting said by, say Square Enix, And we can have the quizzes and the like which would otherwise be out of place on the wiki. Also on Facebook we can encourage readers to say what they think about news and games on the wall, something which is a bit more difficult than on the wiki. Build up a good Facebook and Twitter community like that and it will be just as bustling as the wiki itself.
Also, for the quiz idea, we can encourage followers to PM their own questions to @FFWiki and we can choose the best each day to put forward. We can then encourage the twitterachi to find the answer on the wiki and tweet their answer back. First to answer correctly gets a mention. Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 19:42, June 19, 2012 (UTC)

Discussion #3

Decide on who will update Facebook and Twitter.

Any volunteers? Hopefully we will have about three editors for Facebook and Twitter, but please only put yourself forward if you can commit time to it.

I'll put myself forward for Twitter, as I do have experience in that. I don't have much experience in Facebook, but if we are struggling for volunteers for that, then I'll put myself forward for Facebook as well. Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 17:26, June 22, 2012 (UTC)

Social Plugins

Help:Feeds#Facebook_Social_Plugins. Wikia planned for this and allows us to implement these features right into our pages. I don't like it much (mostly because if we have a comments box it'll probably just get flooded with nonsense), however, just throwing that out there. Here's what they look like:C A T U S E 19:49, June 18, 2012 (UTC) <fb:login-button></fb:login-button> <fb:comments></fb:comments> <fb:recommendations></fb:recommendations>There are other features too, but I couldn't figure out to make 'em work.

How strange, they aren't coming up anymore. Anybody else get this problem?C A T U S E 20:31, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

Maybe you need a facebook session. I'm logged in and I can see it clearly. - Henryacores^ 22:21, June 18, 2012 (UTC)
I can see it fine, but don't have an account. And I can see that Tia's already testing it out.
I have to agree with Cat really, there are better ways of implementing social networking without opening the floodgates to inanity. We could keep the likes and recommendations though. -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 22:44, June 18, 2012 (UTC)
We used to have Facebook likes. I seem to recall Lightning's page had thousands of likes! But then one day they were gone.Keltainentoukokuu 23:06, June 18, 2012 (UTC)
How strange. And they're back up again. Odd. Maybe it's just Wikia glitching up like it always does.C A T U S E 00:08, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Where is it, I can't see it. o_o;;Keltainentoukokuu 00:32, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Probably only in Oasis? - +DeadlySlashSword+ 01:06, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Nope, both skins. JBed 01:07, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Then it seems we have a practical problem - I can't see it either. - +DeadlySlashSword+ 01:29, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Sometimes it's a matter of NoScript, etc. Other times it just takes really long to load. C A T U S E 20:48, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
I also cannot see it, although in my case it is likely because of NoScript and custom AdBlock filters. In terms of the FB idea, although I dislike Facebook in general, I agree with the presence of the 'Like' buttons. I do not, however, like the idea of FB recommendations and I strongly oppose the introduction of FB comments. Comments would get filled with nonsense and inanity, as said above, would be a complete pain to moderate (if it is even possible), and would be of little benefit to the wiki. http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x333/KujaFFIX/2ea674f6.pngKujaBox 02:00, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Ohhhhhh nhhggghhhhh duhhhhhhh I also have blocked Facebook cookies and ads and trackers and everything possible, god I'm stupid.Keltainentoukokuu 02:07, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
And indeed I can see the objects if I allow the relevant multitude of scripts. My views on them, however, are unchanged. http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x333/KujaFFIX/2ea674f6.pngKujaBox 02:11, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Not a fan of the comments system; like buttons could help spread the wiki around more. I hope that we can MediaWiki/CSS them into every page. ScatheMote 02:20, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Comments are completely useless for the wiki. That's what we have talk pages for. - Henryacores^ 02:22, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Facebook comments will centre around the topic of the page (as opposed to the page itself) and the quality of the page rather than anything insightful to improve it. 79.69.204.201 12:39, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Aye. Proof can be found at any wiki with "article comments" or this feature enabled. Ugh.C A T U S E 20:48, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
