Hi guys,

I was a big fan of Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX - they are in my opinion the best RPG ever!! I loved the open world option and exploring all the different side quests e.g.

FFVII Chocobo racing and breeding , the Golden Saucer games and looking for Materia and weapons throughout the world in the airships etc. FFVIII was awesome too with the open world exploring in the Ragnorok, the addictive card games, and rare material collecting and magic/element fighting system and the GUNBLADE :O :O :O FFIX seemed awesome - I only got to about the 2nd disc and then had to return the game to it's owner (the good old days of PS1 game trading at school!!) It looked like you'd have access to ships later (as they were flying around when I was walking on the ground like a noob on the open map)

Anyways, my question is are any of the games after IX similar in style, I briefly played XII or XIII (not sure but it was on PS3 when it first came out), I didn't really like the style, it seemed too focused on making the game visually impressive, the story line was kinda difficult to follow, the fight system felt like i was playing a tekken game (not a fan) and it didnt have the same open world exploration element to it - FF 7-9 the entire world was your playground and you could fly in any direction and weren't limited on the map (like the original Fable or Borderlands).

I know 7, 8 and im assuming 9, took about 5 hours plus before you really could start exploring the world in an airship and taking a break from the main story line to go level your characters up or do some addictive side quests - Are there any modern Final Fantasy games that have these elements? Or do I need to wait for the FF7 remake (which already i'm worried they'll ruin worrying too much about graphics and not enough on the elements that made the game so awesome!)

Thanks for your help,

I don't know why you didn't think FFXII wasn't full of sidequests, and even FFXIII was. But sidequest-wise and combat-wise, FFX is very similar to the three you've mentioned. It has no World Map, but it has an airship.--Magicite-ffvi-ios Technobliterator TC 06:33, August 15, 2015 (UTC)
What? How can you not like Tekken?!? Everyone loves Tekken! Even people who don't like Tekken...
Also, you can almost guarentee that the FFVII reboot is going to suck xP or at least not live up to the standards of the original (which weren't even that high to begin with imo) Square has a tendency to f**k this series like a 5 dollar whore as shown in AC and Dirge of Cerberus.
@Technobliterator I'm going to have to disagree with you on that FFXIII had a lot of variety. The entire game was linear as hell. Sometimes it gave off the illusion that some of this stuff was optional like with the sphere grid but it really isn't. All you do is hold a button for the sphere grid and it does all the work for you. When you get down to it, FFXIII is just one big massive hallway. All the monsters are pre-set on the map accordingly so you have just enough exp to move on to the next boss battle (which are also pathetically easy). The game; right down to the combat system which also requires you to do nothing more than hold down a button, leaves almost nothing up to you. Sky Terminal (talk) 11:22, August 27, 2015 (UTC)
