I'm going to preface this post by saying that I am not a person terribly keen on videos on the wiki in-general, though I accept they are very useful.

I was on the Limit Break (Ability) page and I noticed we have videos for VI, VII, Crisis Core, and VIII. On seeing this I did not like this practise. I have opinions about how videos should be handled:

  1. Should be used to show something specific.

And really that's it. Why do I not think its role is being fulfilled on the Limit Break parent? Because it's not the main article for any of the things. A video of Omnislash does not specifically describe any of the content in the VII section on the Limit Break page, it shows an example of a Limit Break ability, however it does not directly accompany content because the content does not try to describe Omnislash.

Then would I say we put the video on the Omnislash parent? Probably not. Abilities "main" pages are not parents they appear on, but an abilities page. So instead I would say we put it on Limit (Final Fantasy VII). However, since there are lots of videos that would be needed, it would be better on its own page, a subpage, Limit (Final Fantasy VII)/Videos. We could link the video from the parent, however it would make more sense to link to the place where Omnislash is covered ("Omnislash (Final Fantasy VII)") and that will take the person to the video.

So I don't have a problem with videos on glitch pages? No, the glitch describes something, and the accompanying video shows it. It directly supplements content. With the VII section of Limit Breaks, it does give an example of a Limit Break, but it is not the main article for VII Limit Breaks, and it also shows things that are not discussed on that page, such as what Omnislash is.

And I don't have a problem with summon pages? Well, not so much if the summon only appears once. My preference would be a subpage of the article that specifically covers the summons/their abilities in the specific game. But at least on recurring summon pages we use a subpage for the videos.

So basically, how I think we should handle videos:

  • The video must only show one thing, and that one thing must be described next to the video.
  • Alternatively, the video is on a subpage of a page where it would otherwise be appropriate, and it is linked to in the appropriate section.

(This policy would mean no video should have a need to be used twice on the wiki). 19:52, February 17, 2013 (UTC)

From what I can tell this is basically what we do, but newbies and WikiaBot fill up the wiki with videos that are useless.
What needs to be decided is this: Do we use YouTube videos through the {{video}} template or do we use filespace? C A T U S E 19:59, February 17, 2013 (UTC)
I'm saying that Omnislash (Ability), and Limit Break (Ability), and pages like them should remove decorative videos and should replace them with either informative images or decorative images. 20:29, February 17, 2013 (UTC)
Yes, this is exactly what we do... most of the time. C A T U S E 20:37, February 17, 2013 (UTC)
Even though I am the first adversary against the use of videos in the wiki, I can't objectively say that a decorative image is preferable over a decorative video. This is because our media should not be decorative.
One of our goals is to illustrate our scope, which should be done the best way possible without violating copyright. If we can achieve that with a video better than through the use of an image, then there is absolutely no reason why we should opt for the latter. As an example, the EX Burst videos from Dissidia display a complete and optimal execution of the required inputs as well as the full extent of the abilities. This can't be illustrated as well through the use of images. Videos of the FFXIII summon sequences can illustrate the Gestalt Mode better than images because their great dynamicity makes it hard to make a static portrait of the gameplay feature.
Videos should not be overused, but they're not the devil. - Henryacores^ 02:45, February 23, 2013 (UTC)
So you think the videos on Limit Break (Ability) are better placed than images would be? Considering it is a parent for the mostpart and thus not actually where the details are meant to be? JBed (talk) 02:53, February 23, 2013 (UTC)
No, they are unnecessary and clutter the page. - Henryacores^ 03:51, February 23, 2013 (UTC)
