Revision as of 01:44, 25 July 2013
So, a few days ago I talked to Wikia about getting checkuser rights. Their response to me is included below:

Catuse says at 02:10, July 16, 2013 (UTC) "Somewhere a zealous god threads these strings between the clouds and the earth, preparing for a symphony it fears impossible to play. And so it threads on, and on, delaying the raise of the conductor's baton."
Since I brought it up in the first place, I can't really say no. I assume you'll keep the rights after MM3 is over?
|
I'm confident that our admins will use it properly, so I support.
I don't know why they can't just make it a bcrat right. Even if on a per-wiki basis, it would surely make more sense. Up to 3 admins? Why?* I know Scathe isn't a bcrat (yet)
Scathe is probably our most trusted user, in tandem with being involved with the thing we most need it for, of course I support him having checkuser. JBed (talk) 10:08, July 16, 2013 (UTC)
I would support Scathe having the rights as well. It's been an issue in past fights (as well as with the FA and vandalism), so it will be useful both for MMIII and afterwards. There's not really a need for anyone other than Scathe to have it, I think, given that sockpuppetry is seldom something that requires immediate action.
I don't see a problem with it, so I will throw my support for it.
Fully support, though I have to ask whether a single admin is enough to manage the possible sockpuppettry during MM3. I know socks aren't that much of a problem normally, but the tournament itself is supposed to last for months, so perhaps we should appoint somebody else besides Scathe? I volunteer.
Support, will also be useful if needed for the DNC and will be helpful with the mainspace.
| |||
I support Scathe and would support Fae as well. This is a useful tool for this wiki, and both users are respected and trustworthy enough to have it.

@JBed: Privacy reasons, if Wikipedia's checkuser policy is anything to go by; I'm not totally sure what the huge fuss is, since anons and IRCers give away their IPs all the time, but they are a company with a Template:Wikia, which states that they'll give away "information such as your IP address, the time of your visit, your browser type and your browser's language setting") only under certain circumstances. I'm definitely not a lawyer, and that seems like it mostly refers to viewers (do anons waive this right when they click "Publish" after the "Your IP address will be stored in the page history" message?), but yeah.
@Catuse Not all IRC users give away their IP. The fuss is that just like Wikimedia, Wikia only allows to look up IP addresses if there is a reasonable belief a user is violating multiple account policy. That means a CU can't be done just because you have voted in MM3.
And as TA said, it has limited uses, it can't be used in violation of wikia's policy and those who know how to shield their identity can't be caught with CU. IP alone is poor evidence alone anyway.
Support for Scathe and Fae having it, though. It's best to have two, because you need CU permissions to see the CU log, which means you need two to make sure the other is not abusing the permission.--Sove 21:10, July 17, 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, that's helps me understand it better. And in which case I also support Faethin. JBed (talk) 21:15, July 17, 2013 (UTC)
- I know not all IRC users give away their IP, but the vast majority, at least on FFWiki/KHWiki/Wikipedia, do. C A T U S E 21:21, July 17, 2013 (UTC)
Alright, so I'm assuming that everyone is in agreement that Fae and I should receive checkuser rights. I'm going to send this forum in to Wikia tomorrow, so if anyone else still has something to say, be sure to say it now. ScatheMote 01:03, July 24, 2013 (UTC)
