Our music articles... well, let's face it. They vary from average to abysmal. How many have you ever seen get featured? With the release of Curtain Call fast approaching, a number of articles are up for new pages, and even more articles needed pages already and have languished without. This is only going to exacerbate an already present issue. The problem with Music articles, in my opinion, is in no small part due to their lack of proper categorization and networking - I've had to add sideicons to at least four or five music articles today, and I've only just gotten started. The Music category is overflowing with songs placed in a confusing, disorganized mishmash, and when songs are even categorized by all the games they appear in (a rare sight), they're placed in the top category, which in my opinion, is less than ideal. I have two suggestions to help remedy this issue:
This has the additional bonus of making it so that our {{Songs}} template makes actual sense in the context of naming, as opposed to coming out of nowhere and generally being confusing for people who are trying to make new pages *coughmecough* For songs that recur over many entries in the series (e.g. Prelude), or for pages about songs or song archetypes that have a place in nearly every title in the series (e.g. airship theme), I'd place that page in the Songs general category. ...Anyways, those are the two things I propose. If anyone has any other suggestions or alternatives to help out with Music pages, I'm more than happy to lend an ear to them. Or an eye, as the case may be. Regardless.
This discussions sounds familiar...regardless, needs to be done. I think I proposed something similar before, but a category based on song "types" as well. In addition, what song are we talking about? Let's say the song you're categorizing is Battle with Seymour. It would be:
| |||
I think I remember me and Techno talking about this... I believe we decided (or I decided) that dividing by Field, Battle, and Event would be good ideas. Character themes are events, except for World Map themes. Would World Map themes be their own category, or would we rename Field to encompass World Map?
If someone finds that discussion that would be useful. JBed (talk) 18:08, September 6, 2014 (UTC)
^Correct on both counts. Anyways; Character themes are only map themes with Terra's theme in VI and in Dissidia, IIRC? Event probably suits it better...that said, Character themes are sometimes played during battles, which are technically events and...eh you get the point. Oh well, I support those 3 types being used.
I don't think World Map Themes are prolific enough (i.e. they're not in half the series, and there are no more than, let's say three, max, per game) to merit their own category. I'd say Field would do. "Event" seems kind of weird to me, since it doesn't really speak to "character" to me. Perhaps an "Other" category would do? If it's not a battle or map theme, it goes in there.
Other works. I tend to not like using that option, but it works.
Character themes would go in event, but there are other things that would go in event too. They're just themes that play during scenes, not just regular BGM for locations and in battles. Edgar and Sabin's Theme plays in Figaro Castle IIRC, so that would be a Field Theme. We could also consider an Event Theme as well, I don't remember how often it is played. Okay, so the consensus (and I have spoken to multiple people on IRC about this, so "consensus" does not actually mean "three people") seems to indicate a categorization pattern that looks something like this:

By "Songs" do you mean themes, or specifically songs? JBed (talk) 18:14, September 7, 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah...Jimcloud made a bunch of categories with the term "Songs" but I think is the wrong term. My browser dictionary defines "song" as "a short metrical composition intended or adapted for singing".Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 18:30, September 7, 2014 (UTC)
- I'm going to move them all with Intangir Bot now, as I agreed with her on IRC.-- Technobliterator TC 18:32, September 7, 2014 (UTC)
Well I am happy to see the music articles get some activity. Not many people edit those.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 19:15, September 7, 2014 (UTC)
- My thoughts exactly. With Curtain Call coming out, a lot of pages need updated, and a lot more pages need made, bringing light to the sad shape our song articles are in. The more efforts that can be made to improve them, the better, in my opinion. Jimcloud 19:23, September 7, 2014 (UTC)
- if i may chime in (see what i did there lol), in the professional music world, and also to the lay man that bothers to know the difference, calling something a song necessitates that it contain lyrics. Its more appropriate to call each piece of music a track, as in Battle Tracks (hence the term soundtrack). I'm of the view that 3 categories are generally sufficient - Battle Tracks, Field Tracks (taking after FFXIV's original 2 OSTs) and a 3rd category for Themes. More often than not, Battle and Field tracks are mutually exclusive categories, and Themes seldom overlap but if they do it's easier to prioritize them if there are fewer categories. By themes, I mean music used only in specific times for a particular moment. Character themes would best belong here.. as well as cross series stuff like Victory Fanfare and the Prelude (i suppose). I would hesitate to make Songs its own category because vocals are being used in all 3 categories mentioned above as well--Arciele Spira (talk) 03:50, October 11, 2014 (UTC)
Albums Category[]
I was wondering, maybe the Category:Albums could also be better organised. Now everything is just lumped here. Could at least divide between game soundtrack albums, and others? Some games have specific categories, like Category:Final Fantasy XIII Soundtracks.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 18:49, September 17, 2014 (UTC)
Composer Categories[]
Should we also make composer categories? We have concept artist categories (which are in very big need of updating) so why not also categorise music media per their composers as well?—Kaimi (999,999 CP/5 TP) ∙ 11:36, October 10, 2014 (UTC)
- I quite like this idea. Tia-Lewise 11:47, October 10, 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, we should. Support.-- Technobliterator TC 11:49, October 10, 2014 (UTC)
- Just one question: the naming convention: will it be "Category:<Composer> Music Media"?—Kaimi (999,999 CP/5 TP) ∙ 23:13, October 10, 2014 (UTC)
