I suppose I should have asked about this earlier, but it seems like I can voice it here. When it comes to welcoming new users...are you supposed to welcome the automatically created accounts? I never see anything on their talk pages, but I felt the need to say something recently since two accounts were created with very similar names, so I felt the need to warn this person/bot/alien about sockpuppeting. Can someone help me? I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. Tia-LewiseRydia - Young battle 23:25, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

We shouldn't welcome users who create their account here but do not edit. If they make an account here but then choose not to edit then there isn't really any need to welcoming them since everything on the welcome template is about being apart of this wiki.
However, if you have something to say to a user who has not edited but has joined, then you may welcome them and add to their talk page. So we shouldn't welcome every newly created account, however there is nothing wrong with welcoming them if you have something to say on their talk page. JBed 23:36, January 14, 2012 (UTC)
Well, yes, but I'm referring to those who are listed as 'Automatically created' rather than 'New user account.' I thought maybe they might be bots...which is why I'm asking about it, in case I'm making a right fool of myself here and should stop and shut my mouth. Like I say, I never see anyone welcoming the automatically created accounts. Tia-LewiseRydia - Young battle 23:41, January 14, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, sorry. I've never noticed there were two different types of "new user". I can't find any example of an automatically created account editing here... --Actually, December 24th. That user definitely wasn't a bot.
I have no idea what an automatically created account is.
If it were me, I just wouldn't bother. Most of the time they don't even edit here so it's not really our problem. JBed 23:46, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

Three types of users:

  • Anons. Don't bother welcoming 'em (and even then, use welcomeip unless you're talking to them. Probably even if "talking" means test1 because what if another anon shares IP adresses, sees the test1 and freaks out. The welcomeip would be "calming" to them.
  • New users. welcome as soon as they edit according to Mr. Bedford -- I thought it was as soon as they join though.
  • Autocreated accounts are accounts of people from other wikis who nipped over here. They didn't have to edit, just visiting is enough. Don't welcome 'em unless they edit. I don't want welcome messages at the Call of Duty Wiki or Eternal Sonata Wiki when I don't even play those games and was just checking for some code. C A T U S E23:50, January 14, 2012 (UTC)
I think people welcome new users. I wouldn't personally, but it seems to be the thing to do so continue to welcome if you guys like. JBed 23:57, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for all your help! :) Tia-LewiseRydia - Young battle 11:45, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
