So I figured we should talk about this, seeing as there's some issues here and there. I know that the standard policy for creating articles for equipment is generally 4 appearances (well, it's 4 for abilities too), and it gets an article if it's a top-level command such as spells are abilities like Attack, Revive, Items, etc. However, at which point do we decide what DOES get an article or not? For instance, Limit Break abilities. Do these get an article automatically? Do they require at least 4 appearances total to get an article? What about other abilities that would normally have one appearance, such as XIII's Lifesiphon or Dragon Claws? Do they get an article automatically? In addition to this, I started making a Miscellaneous Abilities template for abilities that don't fit on any article nicely (such as the Break abilities, Dragon's Crest, Thievery, etc.). If there are any abilities that aren't on any templates or don't fit on any, they should probably go there. That is all. Dismissed.
You do know we have the Article Creation Policy, right? If it's not covered by that you don't make it. And if you think we should, then discuss. JBed (talk) 22:17, October 21, 2014 (UTC)
I know we have that. That's kinda why I brought up the Limit Breaks in particular since...well...I'm not sure how it's handled via that. Should they be covered specifically? Should they be covered like normal abilities? How should they be covered? Those are the ones in particular right now to ask about (I know I think it was Spira that asked about the various FFXI/XIV stuff too, so there's that as well).
They're covered like other abilities. FFVIII uses Limit commands so they get pages. FFVII's are skillset(-ish) so they go in the Limit skillset article. IX's are commands, so they get pages. etc.. When we talk recurring, same again. If an ability appears /2 times/ (yes it's 2, it is what the ACP says -- but they do have to do the same thing in both appearances, if the same character uses an ability of the same name 3 times even if the function differs they get a page)) then it gets a recurring ability page. Yeah, I noticed it dropped from 3 to 2. Any particular reasons for that? Otherwise, that means there's probably going to be crapload of articles popping up from the Articles to Make topic, no thanks to Brigade making a lot of things have 2 appearances at least (and most from Dissidia as well). @_@;
*shrugs* AFAIK it was never 3. Abilities in a Spell skillset have always got a page for only 1 appearance which made no sense to me. For skills in other skillsets having to meet 3 sounds a bit ridiculous.
When we were trying to draft a policy a while ago, we came to the conclusion "all abilities get a page". Which never happened. Later smaller discussions decided that skillsets cover their abilities. The 1-appearance spell skillset has always been in place, we decided that since X and XII treat their non-magic skillsets equally to magic ones they should have 1-appearance too. And around this time (perhaps before) we said that if abils in spell skillsets are 1 appearance, for other skillsets it can be 2. JBed (talk) 22:37, October 21, 2014 (UTC)
Oi, talk about complicated. @_@; Ok then...I do distinctly remember it always being 3 for abilities (but 1 for spells, which I myself was a bit confused on but oh well). Guess this means a crapload of articles will be coming then! Though I MAY need someone to doublecheck anything I make now because of this (I'm guessing everything that's listed on say...the FFX/X-2/XIII templates for abilities in this case would get articles then?). Speaking of abilities, should some abilities really be grouped together with others? For instance, Dark Attack/Buster, Sleep Attack/Buster, Blitz/Area Sweep, etc.? I feel they shouldn't be even if they are really similar...
- It is an ability under any of the four main skillsets in Final Fantasy X.
- If an ability is a Buster ability then it shares a page with the Attack ability under the Attack ability's name.
For X-2 each job has (IIRC) one command and one skillset. So not as many X-2 ability articles as you may be thinking. XII is sorted, X is (mostly) sorted. Sometimes we group abilities on pages, like someone thought Quick Pockets could be covered on Item (Edit: Oh, Talk:Quick Pockets that was a case-specific decision). There is no policy for that though. JBed (talk) 22:48, October 21, 2014 (UTC)
Hmm...in that case, should most of these abilities even be listed on the game templates then??? Gods this is far too confusing than it should have any rights to be...
*checks* maybe? I wouldn't keep it the same as it is, but IX does it like this. It just doesn't link when there is no article. But it also doesn't sort by job, it sorts them by skillset. Maybe instead you would do:
- Thief | Steal - Flimflam (Pilfer Gil - Borrowed Time - etc.) - Flee.
I would probably also just give a section to Auto Abilities and not divide by job. JBed (talk) 23:02, October 21, 2014 (UTC)
I do like how IX handles it for the most part (I say that even though there's abilities that don't link anywhere, which irks me quite a bit but I can understand why there's still there). In any case, later on today or whenever I'll be doing those articles before I do more Brigade stuff I suppose. >_>
