I've mentioned this before, but I would like to officially suggest the addition of two licenses: One for ripped models and one for ripped images.

A license for the former would mention that the screen was taken from a third-party model viewer (and thus may not be wholy accurate to the game). A license for the latter would mention that the image has been ripped directly from the game (and would have no real reason to be any different than it is in the game). --Ripped images break fair use far more than ripped models.

It would also significantly lower the uses of a generic {{SECopyright}}. I mean, what would be left? Do we use SECopyright for taking images from official sites? 2.102.228.237 19:18, March 5, 2013 (UTC)

Ripped images are ripped from the data, not taken from the screen. Yes, this would largely include sprites, as well as menu portraits and other 2D elements. 2.102.228.237 20:49, March 5, 2013 (UTC)

{{SECopyright}} is a bit vague and generic. We could probably do with some more specific licenses, it'd look better for us to be able to understand what is defined as what. Tia-LewiseRydia - Young battle 21:35, March 5, 2013 (UTC)

Screenshots SE releases do not seem to be true screenshots; they are enhanced somehow to look better than the real deal. But I would also use {{Screenshot}} on them since it is more specific.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 03:21, March 6, 2013 (UTC)

@Catuse: Firstly, not all images from official sites are screenshots. Wallpapers, artwork, renders, and sprites can also be found on these sites. Secondly, what Kelt said about enhancing, and also screenshots found on their site are also not necessarily from the final product. 92.24.164.132 15:47, March 6, 2013 (UTC)

Bump: Any thoughts on this? If we do implement it, I will be taking other people's work for granted, but I don't feel that licensing a model image we find somewhere else the same way as something taken from a model viewer. From a third-party model viewer we are not using the same model-renderer the games use. And therefore I think this be made clear. JBed (talk) 20:48, July 5, 2013 (UTC)

Proposal:

  • Addition of {{Model}} template, parameter for game/version. Maybe we should state the viewer too, but I don't do that now so it's not like there's any precedence for it.
  • Addition of {{Sprite}} template, parameter for game/version.
  • Template for images taken from websites. Parameter for web link to image or site. It may also be good to use web archiving in case things get taken down-- and this means we'd use a parameter for timestamp. We might be able to have the timestamp generated when the file gets uploaded. This won't work for flash sites though, unfortunately. Not that it matters.

So with Scan, Screenshot, Model, Sprite, Website, that leaves... self-made works like Jeppo's XIII-2 graphics, graphical recreations, and my VII maps, which fall under FPD. The other possibility is SE-released images not found on a website, but in, say an email. We got any of those? 89.243.247.108 01:55, May 19, 2014 (UTC)

I support the addition of Sprite and Model templates and would be happy to add them. Makes much more sense than adding screenshot which I've been doing.--Magicite-ffvi-ios Technobliterator TC 20:26, May 28, 2014 (UTC)
Well, screenshots of sprites or screenshots of models are still Screenshots. The Sprite license is just saying "extracted from the data and converted into viewable format", and the Model license is saying "extracted from the data and converted into viewable format and then viewed on a third party viewer and taken at a specific angle".
So if there are no objections I will be adding these templates. JBed (talk) 19:37, July 11, 2014 (UTC)
Actually, if there are no objections, I'll just call them "ExtractedGraphic" and "ModelViewer". More clarity. Rather than "Website" I may go "Download" for the wider coverage (like images from emails). It says the image came from SE as is. JBed (talk) 02:56, July 13, 2014 (UTC)

Who is going to add these new templates to all existing images? o_o;; When the Screenshot template was introduced that never got done either.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 13:31, July 13, 2014 (UTC)

I don't mind doing a sweep that should clear out a lot of the easier to tell ones.
There are some that might not be able to be identified because even though they come from a source it wasn't identified on upload.
After that then, whoever wants something to do? It's not of utmost importance that the specific license is used, just more ideal, however we should still be enforcing it proactively (which is something I don't do, but we have users who ensure newly uploaded images are catted and licensed???) 88.107.149.154 19:08, July 13, 2014 (UTC)
