I just like to know your opinions on a few things about our spell and ability articles. Recently I've been working hard to improve these articles starting with the original, but I've faced some problems. Questions are highlighted in bold for those who can't be bothered to read the whole lot.
- 1 Spells/Abilities with limited appearances.
There are quite a few of these articles that explain abilities/spells that have only appeared in one game. One example is Diaja. I've seen a few abilities of late that when an ability article with one appearance has been created, they are almost instantly VFD'd by some of the elder FFWiki members (Delay Buster, for example), so you can see that I'm getting mixed signals here. My question is When is it suitable for an ability or spell to have it's own article? (And yes, I have read the Manual of Style and it seems a little too vague on the subject)
- 2 Spell/Status Effect articles
There are Status Effects that have the same name as the spells that inflict them (e.g. Silence). Should someone split these articles up, one for the Status and one for the spell? I'll be happy to do it if you agree.
- 3 Enemy Abilities
I've just got more than halfway through adding Redirects and Disambigs for the Enemy Abilities in Final Fantasy and I got to thinking. Is anybody ever likely to type an enemy ability in the search bar? They are more likely to search for the enemy who used that ability. Most abilities are not particularly noteworthy so I suggest only make articles for enemy abilities if they happen to be Blue Magic spells, or if they are otherwise particularly noteworthy (e.g. a final boss attack whose animation takes years to perform) Does anybody agree?
I might think of more questions later. Discuss. Jeppo (Talk) 01:20, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

In order: 1) I dunno... I've always personally liked the creation of any player-usable spells, even if they are exclusive to one game. I okayed the "own pageness", for lack of a better word, of FFXI-exclusive spells such as Aero III (after being convinced to relinquish the opposite view). There are a plethora of XI spells around: Firaga II, Burst, etc. I think spells from other games should get the same children, Diaja included. Which articles have been VFD'd? 2) I think the consensus, largely driven by AJDurai, ILHI, and Yuan, was to split nearly every status/spell page into two. 3) This is the most controversial, I think. Non-notable enemy attacks that appear only once should definitely not get an article. Recurring abilities that seem lackluster, such as Bite, generally are disambiguated thanks to ILHI. What line seperates a non-notable spell from a page-worthy one is not really defined. I would maybe say three appearences or more, and used by a boss in at least of those games. This isn't a guideline by any means, I tend to be liberal with ability creation pages namely because I like finding pictures for them, like the beautiful Grand Cross (Ability) and Waterja pictures. I don't think anyone would object if you created an actual page for Bite and uploaded a picture for it...

1)All player-usable spells and abilities should have its own article regardless of the number of appearances. 2)Not any different from what we did with Elements, Status Effects and Abilities should be completely merged.
Thanks for the response. I was beginning to think I got typer's cramp in vain!

1: Well, Delay Buster was VFD'd for a short while by ILHI, but now I see that it has instead been made into a redirect to Delay Attack, which is technically a different ability. Having said that the only information it said prior to becoming VFD'd was "Greatly delays the action of an enemy." and were I saw it quickly enough, I probably would have expanded it which may have saved it from its fate.
The first sole-appearance spell that I'll come across that hasn't been made into an article is the Barrier spell from FFII, but since I've got the go ahead, I'll create that article once I reach it.
2: This is what I was fearing - a difference of opinion. I can see the pros and cons of both arguments - Merging or splitting.
3: OK. If I see any that ILHI have missed (which is unlikely given that he is very thorough on these sort of things) I'll Disambig them. I won't bother with articles unless it's Blue Magic or otherwise noteworthy.

- Spells get a page with one appearance. The same should probably occur with abilities.
- Spells and statuses should be split. I'd be doing this now but I have a million other things to do.
- Redirect and disambiguate. However, I'm doing a massive project with all list of pages/redirects/disambigs at the moment. Slow in progress due to having a million other things to do. I'll be parenting a lot after I've done everything else that's in my way. (which will be never ;D) ILHI 16:02, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
