Fortification materia is a Magic Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It provides spells that improve defensive attributes. These spells are Protect, which improves
Defense, and Shell, which improves
Magic Defense.
The Warding Materia can be paired with fortification materia to also grant resistance (or, at max level, immunity to)
Deprotect and
Deshell. This is identical to
Enervation Materia, which is used to cast spells to inflict said statuses.
Though Barrier Materia exists, it provides (more expensive) spells that halve a damage type, as opposed to boosting defense.
Obtained[]
A fortification materia is found aboard Shinra-8 in chapter 5, "Blood in the Water", on the balcony in the Royal Lounge.
Fortification materia is sold for 2000 gil apiece in shops that sell materia from Costa del Sol onward.

Use[]
The fortification materia grants spells that boost defense and magic defense, respectively. Depending on the damage type used by the enemy, these spells are relatively inexpensive means to provide durability against certain types of attacks.
Fortification materia can also be paired with warding materia used to provide resistance to deprotect and deshell, which reduce defense and magic defense respectively. This means it competes with enervation materia, which provides resistance to the same statuses, for this use case. If a player wishes to protect against them and is choosing which to go in the slot, it will depend on their preferred use case; an offensive use case to weaken an enemy's defenses favors enervation, while cases where players need to play more defensive favor fortification.
The fortification materia is similar to but distinct from the barrier materia, which grants the Barrier, Manaward, and Manawall (and also has bigger attribute bonuses by equipping it). Barrier materia spells halve damage types rather than simply boosting defense, meaning they provide greater durability improvements, but are much more expensive to cast. Players who wish for maximum resistance can apply both. Barrier materia also cannot be used to resist against any statuses, unlike fortification. Fortification's spell effects also last longer than barrier materia's.
Aside from warding materia, fortification has a few other Support Materia pairings.
Magnify Materia allows the spells to be cast on all party members at once, making it a more ATB-efficient ability; though players may prefer to pair this with barrier materia, pairing with fortification materia has cheaper spells to cast.
Magic Focus Materia can increase the effects' lengths, while
Magic Efficiency Materia can reduce their MP costs, though these are inefficient uses of these materia.
The player can also use the Fortification Materia Earrings instead to save a materia slot and not needing to level up the materia to get all the spells. One such pair of earrings is found in a chest on Mt. Nibel.
