Forgotten Capital, also known as Forgotten City,[note 1] is a field map in Final Fantasy VII. It is located in the Icicle Area inside Corel Valley, beyond the Sleeping Forest, and far to the east of Icicle Inn. An abandoned city with minimal random encounters, the Forgotten City is visited first during "Parting with Aeris" as the final destination of the quest, and returned to later in the game in "What Aeris Left Behind". In "Parting with Aeris", the player must first obtain the Lunar Harp from Bone Village and take a path from there ending in Corel Valley that leads to the city; on subsequence visits, it is reached via the world map.

The entrance is a fork in the road for three possible paths. The left path leads ultimately to a save point, the right path ultimately to an inn, and the center path toward the main path down.

The left pathway primarily leads to the house with a save point on the left, and back onto the center path on the right, or to the entrance on the south.

Built house[]

The house on the left path contains a save point as well as a Magic Source.

Right path[]

The right path leads to a number of houses, many of which contain items, and one containing an inn. The first on the path is a shell-shaped house with a few items. The second is the inn. On the far right is an exit out to the Corel Valley Cave.

The first house on the right pathway is climbed up a spiral path. At the top of the house is a Guard Source.

The house that serves as the inn has three beds on the top floor. This inn is necessary to use during "Parting with Aeris", as the party must rest to continue the quest. On the bottom floor is an Elixir, and on the top floor, behind the beds, is an Enemy Skill Materia.

Quests[]

Main scenario[]

The Forgotten Capital is first visited at the end of "Parting with Aeris", after the player has the Lunar Harp and passed through the Corel Valley. Primarily what occurs here are story sequences, as the player must rest with the party at the city to continue, and a boss battle with Jenova∙LIFE occurs at the end of the story sequences at night.

In "What Aeris Left Behind", the party returns to the Forgotten Capital for more story sequences, this time involving Geisel Bugenhagen. To continue said sequences, the player must obtain the Key to Ancients from the Bottom of the Sea first to complete the sequence, which requires use of the submarine from Junon.

Musical themes[]

"Listen to the Cries of the Planet" from Final Fantasy VII

The theme that plays in Forgotten Capital is "Listen to the Cries of the Planet" (星の声が聞こえる, Hoshi no Koe ga Kikoeru?). During the Jenova∙LIFE battle and during the events preceding it and the events after the battle, "Aerith's Theme" plays.

Behind the scenes[]

Forgotten-Capital-Hidden-Dialogue

Yuffie prevents the player from leaving.

When the player first arrives at Forgotten Capital in Final Fantasy VII, they cannot continue onwards toward Icicle Inn because a party member will come out and stop Cloud, saying they need to find Aeris. A similar event was programmed to happen when attempting to leave the village, with a party member coming out to tell Cloud they are tired and that they should find somewhere to rest. This scene is never triggered in the final game due to a programming oversight, and the player can leave the village, and must discover that they are supposed to sleep in one of the houses by themselves. At night, Cloud cannot leave the village to the north, saying he must find Aerith, but the similar event upon leaving from the south entrance never triggers.

The word "shit" was turned into symbols for the PC versions of Final Fantasy VII that had a slightly altered script. One occasion of profanity was missed, however: if the player returns to Forgotten Capital with Cid as party leader, and examines the blue lights in one of the houses, Cid will react and say the word without the censorship.
