Refine Forbidden Magic from an item
Description
Forbid Mag-RF (forbidden magic refiner) is a menu ability in Final Fantasy VIII that allows the player to make Meteor and Ultima magic spells from certain items, the most powerful offensive spells bar the final battle exclusive Apocalypse. Making spells from items is generally much more convenient than drawing from enemies, but the items that refine into Meteor and Ultima can be hard to come by.
Obtained[]
The Guardian Force Bahamut already knows Forbid Mag-RF upon obtaining him. Bahamut is recruited from the hidden island at the corner of the world map by fighting him as a boss. If the player removes Forbid Mag-RF with Amnesia Greens, there is no way to get it back.
Mechanics[]
Using Forbid Mag-RF in the Ability menu enables the player to make spells from items currently in their possession and allocate the resultant spells to a party member who has space in their Magic inventory. Each party member has 32 slots for Magic, and can hold 100 spells of each type.
Item | Refine Into |
---|---|
Dark Matter | 1 = 100 Ultima |
Energy Crystal | 1 = 3 Ultima |
Meteor Stone | 1 = 1 Meteor |
Pulse Ammo | 5 = 1 Ultima |
Star Fragment | 1 = 5 Meteor |
Ultima Stone | 1 = 1 Ultima |
Use[]
Forbid Mag-RF makes the most powerful offensive spells in the game, Meteor and Ultima, which are excellent for Rinoa's Angel Wing (especially Meteor) and for junctioning. However, the items that turn into these spells are hard to come by, the best way likely being defeating Ultima Weapon for 100 Ultima Stones. A Dark Matter also becomes 100 Ultimas, but one is needed to teach Quistis her ultimate Blue Magic spell, and getting numerous Dark Matters is a large effort (100 Curse Spikes refined with Tool-RF). Energy Crystals are farmable from Elnoyles, but are also needed for weapon remodeling and for making Pulse Ammo, itself needed for Squall's ultimate weapon, and so the player is best not refining these items until they are finished with all weapon optimizations these items are required for.
Star Fragments for Meteors are farmable from various enemies (Iron Giant and its cards being good sources), though some are also needed for weapon remodeling.
Meteors can also be drawn from Ruby Dragons and Ultimas from the paid draw point at Shumi Village.
