Final Fantasy Wiki

Float is a status enhancement in Final Fantasy VIII that makes the affected immune to ground-based attacks (in effect, Earth-elemental attacks). It also has tactical use in the battle against Minotaur and Sacred to stop them from healing via the "power of the earth" (bosses are usually immune to Float, however).

The effect lasts approximately 11.73 seconds without Haste/Slow/Stop. The visual indicator for Float being in effect is that the affected hovers slightly aboveground. Flying enemies and very "heavy" enemies or burrowing enemies cannot be bestowed with Float. Though "fly enemies" appear similar to a Float status, it is not an innate property of these enemies, and they are vulnerable to Earth-elemental damage.

The player may find use in Float in battles against enemies that use Quake, like Cerberus, though they can also mitigate/absorb Earth damage with Elem-Def-J. Float status does not make one weak to Wind, though some flying enemies may be natively weak to it.
