Battle[]

Flan Azabache uses higher level magic attacks and is immune to all elements except Gravity, which it absorbs. While it is normally not a difficult foe, it becomes much more dangerous when Oversouled. In its normal form, the Flan Azabache has a 50% chance of using Demi, which removes 1/4 of the party's remaining HP and inflicts Gravity-elemental damage; and a 25% chance each of using either Bio or Absorb. The former inflicts Poison on one character, while the latter siphons 3/16 of a character's remaining HP and MP and can be learned as a Blue Bullet.

In Oversoul, the Flan Azabache gains the ability to increase its Magic stat based on its remaining HP relative to its maximum HP:

  • 81%-100% max HP: 34 Magic
  • 61%-80% max HP: 47 Magic
  • 41%-60% max HP: 66 Magic
  • 21%-40% max HP: 93 Magic
  • 1%-20% max HP: 130 Magic

On its first turn, the Flan Azabache inflicts Bio on itself to gain the Poison status. Afterwards, it has a 20% chance of using each of the four third-level elemental spells or Demi, with its spells (except Demi) growing stronger as its HP drops. Should the Poison status be removed by any means, the Flan Azabache will use a self-inflicted Bio to regain the status. If it has 50%-70% of its max HP, or it has not used Magic Up or Magic Down at all, it will cast Demi on itself.

The Flan Azabache is always encountered alone.

Strategy[]

Having Reflect or elemental-resistant/absorbent equipment helps when facing a Flan Azabache in Oversoul, and having several recovery items on hand helps to deal with its Demi spell. Absorb is nothing to worry about.

As its Defense and Magic Defense are high, using Defense-ignoring abilities like Fireworks will help in defeating it quickly. The Flan Azabache's immunity to all non-Gravity elements plus Holy makes elemental attacks ill-advised.

Creature Creator[]

After unlocking the Ruin Depths, the Flan Azabache becomes available for capture via a Trap pod L in the Calm Lands, always appearing in place of the Adamantoise.

When recruited, Flan Azabache comes with Magic Up, Flare, Curaga, and Life Preserver (Death/Stoneproof) learned. It is advised to have it fight Humbaba or Aeshma (preferably the Shadow Envoy team featuring two Aeshmas) in the Fiend Arena to learn Ltg./Water Eater, Total Limit Break (unlocks at Level 30), and Ultima (unlocks at Level 60), becoming a force to be reckoned with. It can learn an additional Fire/Ice Eater from an enemy that casts fire or ice spells, e.g. the Djose Outlaws team of the Fiend Arena. However, the player can instead choose to replace both Fire/Ice Eater and Ltg./Water Eater with Omnistrike via the Force of Nature accessory to make the Flan Azabache convert all elemental damage to regained HP instead and free up slots for more useful auto-abilities, namely Magic Booster and Spellspring. Ribbon can replace Life Preserver via the Mascot dressphere.

As is typical of the Flan family, the Flan Azabache is best used as a magic caster due to its high Magic stat. It also has high Defense but low Magic Defense. Due to being an L-sized creature, it has considerably higher Agility than other members of the Flan family. Soul of Thamasa accessories can be consumed to unlock Magic Booster, further increasing the Flan Azabache's magical damage.

Fiend Tale[]

You wish to hear an old man's tale? Many years past, in the dark of night came a great flash of light. The blood of my people flowed like water, and the glow of the pyreflies blinded us all. It was like millions of stars falling from the sky. When day broke, I found myself in this form.
Let's skip forward a thousand years, hmm? Yevon preached about the horrors of Sin and the imperfection of humanity, and slowly grew in power. But I refused to let Yevon dictate how we should live our lives. So I began a movement against him.
We were but a small group, and Yevon persecuted us relentlessly. We were declared heretics and sentenced to exile in Baaj, but we would not even make it there. Yevon's followers, in accordance with his teachings, sent us to the Farplane in his name. Our remains turned into pyreflies, lighting up the night. Yet I resisted, choosing to become a fiend. Even the great Yevon has a dark side to his story. My mission is to make sure that part of his legacy is not forgotten.
But enough of such stories. My time has long since passed. Ironic, no? One of Yevon's own summoners bringing its long history to an end. I was murdered by a summoner, and sent on my way to the Farplane all those years ago. I have resisted the journey for a thousand years, but now I believe the time has finally come.

One notable Flan Azabache was created from the spirit of a man who lived 200 years ago. Part of a group against the newly established Yevon Order, this man met his end against a summoner and remained a fiend while his allies departed to the the Farplane. Brought to the Calm Lands by Yuna and Shinra, Flan Azabache tells them of the countless people who died whose names were never recorded in the history before fading away to be the light within the darkness. Completion of this Fiend Tale grants a Rune Bracer as a reward.

Etymology[]

The word Flan refers to a custard dessert with a layer of clear caramel sauce. A typical flan is round with a gelatinous and creamy texture. Also known as crème caramel, caramel pudding or caramel custard.
