Flan is a species of monster Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift. Amorphous, sludgy creatures, they are proficient in MP and Defense, but are sensitive to magic spells, especially those of an element the Flan is weak to.

In addition to their Metamorphosis skillset, Flan may learn several Black Magick spells that correspond to their element. For example, some Yellow Jelly will know Thundara. The White Pudding, on the other hand, will learn Arcane Magick spells and often have Ribbon-bearer to match the ribbon on its sprite.

Etymology[]

The word Flan refers to an open pastry or sponge cake containing a sweet or savory filling. A typical flan of this sort is round, with shortcrust pastry, usually coated with sweet syrup. It is similar to a custard tart or a South African melktert.

The Orthros enemy refers to the octopus Ultros that first appeared in Final Fantasy VI. Despite being a flan, it is the same color and its description alludes to Ultros.

In Greek mythology, Orthrus or Orthus was, according to the mythographer Apollodorus, a two-headed dog who guarded Geryon's cattle and was killed by Heracles. He was the offspring of the monsters Echidna and Typhon, and the brother of Cerberus, who was also a multi-headed guard dog. The Orthros of Final Fantasy has no connection with the mythical Orthros, save for their link to Typhon, which in the Greek myth was the father of Orthros and Cerberus.
