The Flame Shield is a mid-ranked shield in Final Fantasy XII that boosts the wearer's physical evade and halves Fire damage to the wearer.

Wearing multiple pieces of armor that all give the same elemental resistance does not stack, but certain different types do:

Weakness + Halve = Normal damage
Halve + Absorb = Absorbs half

However, there are no equipment that absorb or make the wearer weak to Fire, besides the secretive Gendarme that can't be used in conjunction with Flame Shield.

Obtain[]

Original[]

In the original PlayStation 2 version, the Flame Shield is bought for 3,200 gil in Rabanastre, Nalbina Fortress, and Mt Bur-Omisace after defeating Judge Bergan.

It is also a rare steal from Ixtab. Since Ixtab spawns without pending special conditions unlike some other hunts, it can be a good idea to use the Nihopalaoa + Chronos Tear trick to continually zone in and out stealing to stock up on Flame Shields before they are readily available in shops.

Zodiac[]

In the updated Zodiac versions, the Flame Shield can be bought for 3,200 gil in Eruyt Village and Mt Bur-Omisace. It is also found in a treasure in Henne Mines' Crossover A (75% chance to appear, 40% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Flame Shield without the Diamond Armlet equipped), and Paramina Rift's Head of the Silverflow (70% chance to appear, 35% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Flame Shield without the Diamond Shield equipped), as well as in in Trial Mode Stage 68 with the Diamond Armlet equipped. It is still a rare steal from Ixtab, although less notably now when the shield is available in shops earlier, and now also the uncommon steal from Cultsworn Lich in Trial Mode Stage 9.

Use[]

The Flame Shield is a mid ranked shield that helps evade physical attacks and also halves Fire damage to the wearer. It has the same evade stat as the Golden Shield and the Ice Shield, thus always eclipsing the former and the usefulness compared to the latter depends on which elemental protection matters more in the moment. Due to the shield's Fire-protection, it can be a good equipment piece to keep around even later into the game. It may be useful against Fire-elemental elementals and entites. In the Zodiac versions, it can be used by the jobs Red Battlemage, Knight, Foebreaker and Shikari.

An alternative to Flame Shield is to equip the Adamant Vest or Hat, though these make the wearer weak to Ice on top of protecting from Fire. In the Zodiac versions, the Sash accessory also halves Fire damage, and can be used by every job, whereas the Flame Shield is only available to few.

The Flame Shield can be equipped by characters with one-handed weapons or no weapon in their available hand. It adds to the wearer's physical evasion. Shield Block augments also add +5% to physical evasion per augment purchased. Equipping a shield negates the Brawler augment, even if the character is still attacking bare-handed. Some enemies, especially all the toughest bosses and marks, have Ignore Evasion as a passive ability, which causes their attacks to ignore all blocking and parrying.

The chance to block granted by gloves and shields and Shield Block licenses is checked separately to, and before, the evade from one-handed weapons. If the shield block fails, the game checks for the weapon block, and if that fails, the game checks for parry.[1]
