Fire III is a Thaumaturge and
Black Mage spell from Final Fantasy XIV that deals damage to a single target and grants Astral Fire III.

Use[]
Fire III deals moderate damage to a single target while instantly putting the Black Mage at full stacks of Astral Fire. In addition, it removes Umbral Ice in the same cast. This eliminates the need to ramp up Astral Fire with Fire and
Transpose, immediately putting the Black Mage at its highest damage output.
After using Fire III, the Black Mage should switch to spamming either Fire or Fire IV depending on their level, as Fire III has poor DPS and MP efficiency compared to these spells. The only exception is when the Black Mage gets a
Firestarter proc off of a Fire cast, which will cause Fire III to become instant cast and require no MP. The Black Mage can then use Fire III for a variety of purposes, such as during movement, to weave an off-global cooldown (oGCD) ability, to more quickly reenter Astral Fire, or simply for some free damage.
Sharpcast will guarantee a Firestarter proc on the next Fire used, but it is generally preferable to use Sharpcast in conjunction with
Thundercloud instead.
Despite being a single-target spell, Fire III can also see use in area of effect (AoE) rotations, as the only AoE spell that allows the Black Mage to enter directly into Astral Fire III, Flare, initially consumes all of the Black Mage's remaining MP. As such Black Mages will often use Fire III to enter Astral Fire III before switching to AoE spells. This changes with the
Enhanced Umbral Heart trait, which causes Umbral Hearts to reduce a single Flare's MP cost, allowing the Black Mage to use Flare to enter Astral Fire III and cast additional spells after. However, the Black Mage may wish to still use Fire III in order to allow Flare itself to benefit from Astral Fire III. Either option can be viable depending on the encounter—against less targets or in longer encounters entering with Fire III can be preferable, while entering with Flare may be preferred against more enemies or in shorter encounters.
As Fire III has a cast time longer than the global cooldown (GCD), it can pair well with Swiftcast. Once Fire IV and
Despair are acquired Swiftcast should be used with them instead.

Behind the scenes[]
Final Fantasy XIV (version 1.0)[]
Deals fire damage to target and enemies near it.
Description
After the release of patch 1.20, Firaga was introduced as a Thaumaturge exclusive spell available at level 50. It dealt fire-elemental damage to target and all enemies near it. Firaga had a cast time of 8 seconds by default, but could be reduced in half as part of a combo chain effect with Fira.
