Status-inflicting attacks[]

Some enemies are capable of inflicting status effects with their basic attacks. All such attacks use the same formula for determining whether the status is applied.

If random(0...200) <= [base hit chance] - [target's Magic Defense]
If target resists element, base hit chance = 0, else 100

Due to a bug in the Famicom/NES/MSX releases, the element(s) of the attack becomes those which the user are weak against, resulting in these attacks becoming Fire-, Ice-, Lightning-, or non-elemental.

AI in other releases[]

Versions prior to Pixel Remaster still randomly use an ability or spell if available, but if they do so cast them in a fixed order. Each monster with a script has a base rate that determines their probability of using a spell or ability, checking for spells before abilities and using a regular attack if neither is chosen. However, while the rate remains the same in all releases the value it is checked against varies; in earlier versions this is determined out of a range of 128 for both spells and abilities, but in WonderSwan Color and later releases this range is increased to 200 for spells while abilities remain at 128, in effect making enemies 36% less likely to use spells. The order in which certain enemies use their spells or abilities is also changed in those releases.

Additionally, enemies have a chance to flee before determining their action based on their Morale and the party's level. In the NES release, enemies can flee from any battle if they failed this check, including bosses. Subsequent releases made it so that the flag that prevents players from fleeing certain formations also prevents enemies from fleeing.

Chronodia in the 20th Anniversary releases has unique behavior. While on most turns it may use attacks, abilities, or spells as normal, every 5th turn it will use Seal, ignoring its regular scripting. Using Seal does not have any effect on its ability cycles otherwise.

Targeting[]

If the targeting of an action is an allied enemy, a living enemy is chosen at random with equal rates between each other. If the targeting of the action is a single party member, the target is chosen at these rates depending on their order in the formation:

  • Slot 1: 50%
  • Slot 2: 25%
  • Slot 3: 12.5%
  • Slot 4: 12.5%

If a KO'd party member is selected, the random selection is performed again until a living party member is chosen. Versions prior to Pixel Remaster also avoid selecting a petrified party member.
