The following is a list of superbosses in Final Fantasy XI, being optional boss fights that are generally much more difficult than main storyline encounters. By virtue of its nature as a long-running live service game, there have been many challenges in Final Fantasy XI throughout the years that once represented the peak of difficulty, though as player strength has increased over time, the difficulty of these encounters may lessen in turn. In the earlier expansions, superbosses commonly came at the end of the notorious monster system. In more recent years, superbosses come in the form of battlefields. The notable exceptions are the superbosses that serve as the ultimate challenge in instanced combat content, such as Dynamis, Limbus, or Odyssey.
List[]
There are several ways to divide up the superbosses. The most notable ways are by expansion and by the level cap at the time of their release.

High-Tier Battlefields[]
This was a form of combat content added in Seekers of Adoulin that offered players a plethora of incredibly challenging fights, if they chose to do these fights on the 'very hard' difficulty. For a full list of the High Tier Battlefield opponents and the details of those encounters, see Battlefield (Final Fantasy XI).
Rhapsodies of Vana'diel[]
While many of these fights have been power-crept by subsequent additions in the following expansion, the majority of players still struggle with all of these fights.

Behind the scenes[]
The battle with Absolute Virtue, along with the entire Lumoria NM System, was released in the July 19, 2005 Version Update. The level cap then was 75. Due to the tediousness of Chain of Promathia missions, the ease of access to Lumoria, the difficulty of Lumoria NMs, and the punishing drop rate for triggers, players would not see Absolute Virtue until three months after the NM system was introduced. To ensure Absolute Virtue offered the intended challenge, Square Enix made numerous changes to game mechanics and jobs. This meant that despite how few players were attempting to beat Absolute Virtue, this HNM still served to shape the meta of the game during that time.
Pandemonium Warden required well over a dozen hours of from a coordinated group to beat. In some extreme cases, players would actively play for eighteen hours at a time, engaging in this encounter. This caused much bad publicity for Final Fantasy XI and Square Enix, which led them to make key changes to both this encounter and other High Notorious monsters.
While Final Fantasy XI has become more approachable over the years, the developer tendency to make difficult encounters has not dissipated. The first master trial, Black and White (released in 2015), took players months to clear. The two most recent master trials, Oathsworn Blade (released in February of 2024) and Wings of War (released in May of 2024) have yet to be cleared. The Oathsworn Blade consists of at least seven phases, one for each Naakual. Yet, only one group has reported to have made it into the seventh phase with no confirmed attempts coming close to clearing the fight. The most recent Master Trial, Wings of War, is even more difficult.
