Journal

  • By his vexed expression, it's safe to assume Syntgoht has a favor to ask of you.
  • You overhear Syntgoht thinking aloud, worried over a shipment of goods that has yet to arrive. It's not long before he is aware of your presence, and, after sensing the air of gallantry about you, presumes you to be an adventurer who can assist him in his time of need. Looking to receive his wares as soon as possible, Syntgoht asks that you speak with Nesting Heron at the Bonfire in central Thanalan.
  • Arriving at the Bonfire, you speak with Nesting Heron and are reassured to find that the shipping preparations for Syntgoht's goods are complete. The reason for the delay, she explains, is her preoccupation with a crafting phenomenon known as desynthesis. After explaining the basics of this process and going over the discovery of a new crafting catalyst called demimateria, she encourages you to try desynthesis for yourself, that you might discover the latent potential of previously crafted wares.

  • The attendant at the airship landing seems eager to welcome you to the Gold Saucer.
  • You have been invited to participate in an introductory tour of the Gold Saucer, at the conclusion of which you will apparently be entitled to some manner of complimentary gift. The economics of complimentary gifts aside, there seems little reason not to take part. Proceed to the main counter and inform the receptionist of your readiness to begin.
  • Having enthusiastically welcomed you to the Gold Saucer, the receptionist points out the gates leading to one of its main attractions: the chocobo races. He then explains that most transactions within the establishment are conducted in Manderville Gold Saucer points (MGP), and directs you to his colleague to learn more about the currency and how to acquire it.
  • You step away from the front desk with a newfound understanding of MGP. To continue your tour, proceed to Card Square, where the Triple Triad trader is waiting to teach you more about Eorzea's favorite new card game.
  • The Triple Triad trader introduces you to the realm's most popular new card game, encouraging you to return at any time to learn the rules and begin building a deck of your own. The next stop on your tour will be Wonder Square─make your way there and listen to what the resident GATE Keeper has to say.
  • You learn that Wonder Square is home to an assortment of games─as well as a giant revolving cactuar named “El Coloso,” which features prominently in a number of events. Continue on to the second floor of Event Square, where an attendant named Veleda awaits you by the Cactpot Board.
  • Veleda cheerfully welcomes you to Event Square, home to the Gold Saucer's center stage and the lucrative lottery known as the Jumbo Cactpot. Apparently conscious of the time, she soon blows you a kiss and sends you on your way to the final place of interest on your tour: the incongruously named Round Square. Speak with the GATE Keeper there to continue your tour.
  • Though your visit to Round Square notably fails to shed any light on its oxymoronic name, it does alert you to the presence of a massive boulder dubbed Mt. Corel─the scene of a rousing mountaineering challenge in which you are heartily encouraged to participate. The GATE Keeper informs you that your tour is complete, and encourages you to return to the main counter to receive your complimentary gift. Whatever could it be?
  • Even as you receive your long-anticipated gift, you are greeted by Master Roland, the overseer entrusted with managing daily operations at the Gold Saucer. Observing that you are an adventurer, he shares with you the story behind the birth of the establishment, and the ambitious goals of his esteemed employer, the singular Godbert Manderville. • There is an air of mystery about Brother Barryn. He would bid you help him with a gift.
  • Barryn's heart is true and swift. Desiring to repay Father Iliud for his kindness, he has saved his gil─and, finding it wanting, enlisted your help. Your task is to raise more funds from both Brother Esmour within the church and Sister Zozoru at Camp Drybone.
  • You receive a sack of gil each from Esmour and Zozoru without a single word of persuasion crossing your lips. In truth, you are slightly piqued, for you had taken some pains to prepare your cajolery. Give the sacks to Ermegarde.
  • The gift is ready, made by Ermegarde's capable hands. Take the cinnamon cookies to Father Iliud at the Church of Saint Adama Landama.
  • You present the cookies to a visibly moved Father Iliud. You can now return to Brother Barryn with the satisfaction of a job well done.

  • Near the ruin of training grounds, you encounter a pair of escaped Coliseum soulkin about to slice a wayfarer to pieces. Rather than wax philosophical, you dispatch the doctores and save Fuandrec's cousin. Report the happy news to her.

Sharp as a needle and sure as a backstitch, she orders you to Black Brush Station in central Thanalan to pick up well-worn linen from a trusted merchant.

  • Something weighs heavily on the adventurer's mind...
  • You have been asked to investigate the disappearance of a retainer gone afield on a so-called “venture.” Journey to Drybone in eastern Thanalan, her last known location.
  • You find and rescue the missing retainer from a grisly death at the hands of wild beasts, thus earning her gratitude. Rather than reward you herself, the retainer bids you return to Ul'dah and speak with her supervisor, Chachabi, in the Sapphire Avenue Exchange.
  • Recognizing that you are unfamiliar with the latest services provided by retainers, Chachabi explains that ventures are procurement expeditions which you may ask your retainers to undertake. She then gifts you several ventures, a unique scrip used to pay for these services. Duly informed, you may now speak with your retainers and assign them these tasks at your leisure.

Objectives

  • Search Drybone for the missing retainer.
  • Speak with Chachabi in Ul'dah.

Patch2.3

Journal

  • The realm of Eorzea is filled with countless mysteries, but there is only one which Valiant Hart wishes to solve.
  • Valiant Hart has asked you to help him locate the secret treasure of Lalafuto III, who ruled the nation of Belah'dia over seven hundred years ago. To that end, you must solve a riddle hidden in an encoded message, which was written by the famed explorer Winebaud. Valiant Hart also makes mention of a man named Yayaroku, who may be able to offer assistance.
  • Your investigation leads you to a disciple of Winebaud, who entrusts you with the journal of his deceased master. Return to the statue of the Silent King and share your findings with Valiant Hart.
  • In your absence, Valiant Hart has made further progress in deciphering the encoded message. However, his efforts have yielded yet another riddle, one which you must solve if you wish to locate the treasure you seek.
  • Through methods mysterious and unknown, you receive a message from the late Winebaud. He praises your efforts to seek out the truth and shares with you a verse of poetry for reasons unknown. Valiant Hart will doubtless wish to hear of these developments.
  • Valiant Hart is pleased with your progress, but disappointed that Winebaud did not provide any clues as to the whereabouts of Lalafuto III's secret treasure. Having no other leads, he bids you solve the latest riddle he has deciphered.
  • Once again, the late Winebaud imparts to you a verse of poetry as a reward, albeit one of questionable value. Report your success to Valiant Hart at the statue of the Silent King.
  • Valiant Hart is bemused by the increasing complexity of Winebaud's riddles, as well as his penchant for rewarding you with poetic verses. Brushing aside that curiosity for the time being, he directs you to his most recent translation, which contains yet another riddle.
  • Your jewelry triggers an enchantment woven into Winebaud's engravings, allowing you to receive another message from the late explorer. To your chagrin, it contains little more than another verse of poetry. Valiant Hart does not appear to have seen the message, so perhaps you should tell him what you witnessed.
  • Bemoaning Winebaud's refusal to offer clear and concise directions, Valiant Hart tells you he has finished deciphering the encoded message. However, unlike previous sections, this one does not appear to contain a riddle. But where is the treasure of Lalafuto III, and what must be done to claim it?
  • With the aid of your copper gorget, you lay claim to the secret treasure purported to be worth one hundred million gil. Valiant Hart snatches it from your hand, his eyes wild with greed, but his expression soon changes to one of disbelief. The “treasure” Winebaud spoke of was a collection of love poems written by Lalafuto III to his paramour, with whom the sultan wished to elope. His quest for phenomenal wealth having ended in utter failure, Valiant Hart cries out to the heavens in rage, cursing the explorer who valued true love above all else.

Journal

  • Paiyo Reiyo looks as though he has seen a ghost.
  • Paiyo Reiyo has received a wedding invitation from a former adventuring comrade, a lass named Edda with whom you are acquainted. While impending matrimonial festivities would ordinarily be a cause for gladness, the fact that the groom-to-be is no longer among the living has left the Lalafell deeply perturbed. Paiyo Reiyo indicates that he means to consult a former comrade and fellow invitee regarding the strange affair, only to learn from you that she, too, has been dead for some time. Racked by uncertainty, he requests to see Liavinne's grave with his own eyes. Meet Paiyo Reiyo at the Church of Saint Adama Landama, and show him where your fellow Scion was laid to rest.
  • Arriving at the lichyard, Paiyo Reiyo is dismayed to find Liavinne's grave despoiled and her body missing. He believes that Edda is the one responsible, having lost her battle with despair in the aftermath of her fiancé's death. The Lalafell departs for the Tam-Tara Deepcroft forthwith, determined to put an end to whatever madness his erstwhile comrade is about to commit. Given Edda's admiration for you, it seems likely that your presence will prove valuable to this endeavor. Make your own way to the Deepcroft, and speak with the Wood Wailer guarding the entrance.
  • Huguemont informs you that a Lalafell fitting Paiyo Reiyo's description recently entered the Deepcroft, and in the company of a maiden garbed all in white. Venture into the crypt, and aid Paiyo Reiyo in ending Edda's madness. ※The Tam-Tara Deepcroft (Hard) can be accessed via the Duty Finder.
  • Within the depths of Tam-Tara, you come face-to-face with Edda, and succeed in thwarting her dark ritual. Her plummet into the abyss is a sight you will not soon forget. Turn your attention now to Paiyo Reiyo, and see how he has weathered the ordeal.
  • With the unsavory affair put to rest, Paiyo Reiyo reveals that he has lost the will to continue adventuring. Before he is able to finish speaking, however, he abruptly breaks into a flurry of apologies, and flees like a man possessed. It would seem the Lalafell's troubles are not yet over...
