  • Mathye has the look of a man who has lost everything.
  • Mathye received an order from Saint Endalim's Scholasticate, his most esteemed client, but has lost record of what they requested. All he can recall is they are missing a volume from the Seventy-two Articles of Halonic Polity. He asks that you go to the scholasticate and ask around to figure out which volume they require.
  • You arrive at the scholasticate and have a look around. You find a shelf listing volumes one through nine, but volumes four and six seem to be missing. Looking on another shelf you find volume six. You also notice volume ten lying on one of the tables. A young seminarian named Theomocent tells you he is studying volumes twelve and thirteen, while Archombadin tells you of his work with volume fourteen in a condescending tone. The student standing outside, Leigh, tells you he borrowed a volume from the scholasticate, but he has forgotten which one. After speaking with Janchette, however, you learn that Leigh has borrowed volume four but is too busy to study its contents. Report to Mathye and tell him what you have learned.
  • Your astute observations reveal that the scholasticate is lacking for volume eleven. Thanks to your keen eye, Mathye can go on to sell his wares another day.

Objectives

  • Search for the Seventy-two Articles in the scholasticate.
  • Speak with the seminarians.
  • Speak with Leigh.
  • Report to Mathye.

  • Mathye sighs as he looks around for customers.
  • Mathye explains to you that business has not been going so well after the recent turmoil in the church. He mentions that his best customers, the students of the scholasticate, are often being followed back to the cathedral by disagreeable folk, and less are inclined to walk around in the open, including to the Crozier. In an effort to keep coin flowing, Mathye requests you to make a round near the road to the cathedral and put an end to any harassment you may see.
  • You soon spot an altercation between a group of angry paupers and students clad in scholasticate robes. The encounter escalates when the resentful ruffians make off with a tome of one of the students, Theomocent. The mousy-looking seminarian runs after them to retrieve it, and his friend asks you to pursue him for fear of his safety.
  • You find Theomocent out of breath in a dark alcove, outnumbered by a group of aggrieved Brume residents. The student recognizes their ringleader, “Ben,” as an acquaintance from childhood, and pleads with him to return the book. However, Ben grows angry with the unexpected reunion and holds Theomocent's book over a brazier, intending to destroy it out of spite. Lamenting he was not able to leave his unfortunate circumstances for the scholasticate as Theomocent had, he is soon caught off guard by Leigh, another lowborn student. Leigh attempts to save the book after Ben casts it into the flames and escapes, but he is too late in his attempt to rescue it unscathed. He returns the charred tome to a relieved Theomocent, and the two express their gratitude to you before heading back to the scholasticate.
  • You return to the Jeweled Crozier to find Mathye speaking with a woman of the cloth, and he expresses satisfaction that his business interactions will return to normal with your good deed. He introduces you to Gaetelle of Saint Endalim's Scholasticate, and the clergywoman recognizes you as the adventurer who brought about the revelation of inconsistencies in the teachings. She explains the scholasticate's precarious situation in the aftermath, and how the students have become targets for the public's ire. Impressed by your goodwill towards the students, she asks that you visit the scholasticate for an opportunity to meet with the headmistress.

Objectives

  • Speak with the impertinent pauper.
  • Speak with Theomocent in the Brume.

  • Gaetelle looks at you with bright eyes.
  • Gaetelle expresses hope that you will come visit the scholasticate. She bids you and Mathye farewell before taking her leave to return to the cathedral.
  • Upon approaching the scholasticate, the lector standing at the doors recognizes you, mentioning that Gaetelle was hopeful you would come and visit. Pass through and seek her out.
  • You enter the humble seminary and speak with Gaetelle about meeting with the headmistress, only to find that she is absent. Instead, Bruvagnon introduces himself as the deputy headmaster, before you are interrupted by none other than Consulting Inspector Briardien, his nephew. The good inspector has been summoned to investigate the theft of the new head of the statue of Saint Valeroyant. For old times' sake, Briardien asks Bruvagnon if you can accompany him as his associate in the case. Bruvagnon seems reluctant for you to be “associated” with the scholasticate, but eventually acquiesces. Join Briardien in his search for the student responsible for supervising the statue work.
  • The student overseeing the statue's restoration happens to be Theomocent, the student whom you rescued in the Brume. After being questioned by Briardien, he grows skittish and abruptly takes his leave to search for the missing piece on his own. Judging his conduct to be odd, Briardien concludes that the boy is hiding something. While he conducts his own investigation in the Brume, he asks that you search Saint Valeroyant's Forum in Foundation for anyone suspicious, as he believes the thief may be drawn to the broken statue.
  • In the forum, you find Theomocent pleading with Ben to return the crate containing the head of the statue. In response, Ben angrily accuses Theomocent of accepting the lies of the Holy See in order to have a better life. Leigh soon appears and realizing he is outnumbered, Ben yields the crate and escapes. However, Theomocent seems distraught as he ponders the words of his childhood friend. But he is soon inspired by your courage, and resolves to do his part to redeem the teachings of Halone. The two boys take their leave to return to the scholasticate with the crate.
  • You return to the scholasticate and see Theomocent and Leigh, who have already returned the statue piece and explained what happened, leaving out the details of who had stolen it. Briardien asks after the culprit, but before you can reply, one of the highborn students, Archombadin, interrupts, claiming to have witnessed Theomocent and Leigh conspiring with another lowborn friend to steal the statue piece and return it to curry favor. Leigh denies the accusation, asserting that you were there and can vouch for their innocence, but Bruvagnon dismisses the students, putting an end to the discussion.
  • Bruvagnon commends your assistance in resolving the incident and allows you to further accompany Briardien in his work in the scholasticate. However, pointing out the basic level of investigative skill that was necessary to resolve the incident, the inspector remarks that the theft was merely a way to present a more serious problem. He asks his uncle to explain the real reason why his services were requested.

Objectives

  • Speak with the scholasticate lector.
  • Speak with Gaetelle.
  • Seek out the student in charge of the statue's restoration.
  • Search for suspects in Saint Valeroyant's Forum.
  • Report to Bruvagnon.
  • Speak with Bruvagnon.

  • Bruvagnon is ready to say what is really on his mind.
  • Bruvagnon explains to you that those who strive for a favorable position within the Holy See must first graduate from the scholasticate with the highest marks─as one of the Trinity, or the top three seats which receive a formal endorsement. However, due to the revelations regarding Ishgard's history, both the curriculum and the traditional means of assessment are currently being reevaluated. Without a clear path to the Trinity, the students have grown disillusioned and angry, with some lashing out at their peers.
  • You meet with Headmistress Elviane and the other clergy of the scholasticate, who relay to you and Briardien their wealth of concerns. While they acknowledge that the uncertainty regarding the rankings is partially to blame, they posit it is but part of a larger problem─a fundamental crisis of faith. That being said, the headmistress and her administrators are quite concerned that some students may attempt to manipulate the interim evaluation system to their advantage. Therefore, the administration would have you and Briardien remain vigilant for any unscrupulous behavior that they might conduct a fair and equitable assessment of the graduating seniors.
  • After the meeting with the headmistress, the soft-spoken clergyman introduces himself as Saturnois, a scholasticate instructor who often interacts with the underprivileged students of the seminary. Briardien surmises that it would be prudent to learn more about the students and their aspirations. Gaetelle and Saturnois suggest getting to know the students yourself, as they behave differently in the presence of their instructors. Gaetelle recommends starting with the dormitory prefect, Archombadin de Dzemael.
  • You speak with Archombadin de Dzemael and Lebrassoir de Bonfaurt, who express their opinions on the current turmoil in the Holy See, as well as their hope that the students of the scholasticate will rein in their impulses towards reformation. During your discussion, Archombadin mentions that Gaetelle has given them the task of guiding truant students back to their studies, and Briardien suspects others are doing the same.
  • In your search for other students, you come across Theomocent and Leigh, who intend to go to Foundation to coax their friends back to their studies. Theomocent is hopeful that they will be able to find like-minded students to support their cause, while Leigh's attitude is less optimistic. During your observations, you also meet a highborn student surrounded by his female admirers. He introduces himself as Crammevoix de Maintigny, and appears to have done well in his efforts to persuade a fellow seminarian to return. During a conversation between the two about the nobles taking more responsibility in redressing the imbalance, the smiling seminarian mentions she was to pen a treatise─that is, until her primary text, volume eleven of The Seventy-two Articles of Halonic Polity, went missing. Nevertheless, she leaves to gather her things and return to the seminary, prompting Crammevoix to take his leave for a nap.
  • Gaetelle announces the results of the exercise, with Archombadin and Lebrassoir guiding back the most students to the scholasticate. Though present for the announcement, Crammevoix's name is not among those mentioned, and Archombadin soon makes it clear that the girl he was speaking with, Ulaa, has instead formally withdrawn from the scholasticate. Crammevoix is suspicious of Ulaa's sudden departure, mentioning the dormitory prefect's open disagreement with her views on equality. The quarrel between the highborn students escalates, in which Archombadin utters a biting comment about House Maintigny, prompting Crammevoix to leave. Upon witnessing the feud, Briardien suggests the girl's withdrawal is worthy of further investigation.

  • Briardien glances at you, adjusting his spectacles.
  • Briardien has a hunch that the missing volume eleven of the Articles of Halonic Polity and Ulaa's sudden withdrawal are somehow connected, and decides to find the girl to ask her what─or who caused her to change her mind. In the meantime, Saturnois has asked to meet with you in private in the plaza next to Saint Reymanaud's Cathedral.
  • At the plaza, Saturnois introduces Theomocent and Leigh as the students whom he is counseling to obtain Trinity seats. He also expresses his concerns about Archombadin and Lebrassoir, and their blatant discrimination of lowborn peers. In their pursuit to prove their virtue, Theomocent and Leigh discuss finding like-minded individuals with whom they could ally, and Crammevoix is mentioned as a possible candidate. As Leigh is unenthusiastic in approaching any of the highborn, Saturnois asks you to accompany Theomocent to the Pillars to find Crammevoix.
  • While Theomocent tries his best to persuade Crammevoix to join his cause, it would appear that his timing is unfortunate as the suave seminarian is preoccupied with a beautiful young woman who had been vying for his attention. Laughing at Theomocent's cluelessness in the situation, the highborn student attempts to brush aside his resolve, and leaves elsewhere with the lady. But Theomocent refuses to give up just yet, and urges you to follow him to Foundation.
  • Unexpectedly, Theomocent discovers Crammevoix tied up by his now knife-wielding lady friend. Despite his peril, he warns the timid seminarian not to interfere with his house's affairs, explaining that the woman is one of the smallfolk of his lands, who has rightfully come to seek recompense for his father's sins; he assumes he will most likely pay with his life, as his father had. Theomocent emotionally objects, and tries to convince the woman to accept coin instead of committing a sin herself. He then offers to exchange his life until Crammevoix can return, a gesture that the highborn is moved by.
  • Trusting that Crammevoix will pay her his house's fortune, the woman reluctantly exchanges her prisoner, with Theomocent bound in his stead. Crammevoix promises to return soon after retrieving the coffer from its hidden place in Coerthas. With Theomocent assuring you he will be fine, Crammevoix asks you to accompany him to ensure bandits do not ambush him on the way back. Make haste to western Coerthas, before the knife-wielding woman loses her patience.
  • You join Crammevoix in the western highlands, and he asks you to stand watch while he retrieves the family fortune. Ensure nothing will catch him unawares.
  • As you wait for Crammevoix to search for the coffer, a group of hungry archaeornis seemingly appears out of nowhere. You dispatch the beasts and continue your watch.
  • After what felt like an eternity, Crammevoix finally produces his family's fortune. He bids you both return to Ishgard, and hopes that Theomocent is still alive and well.
  • Satisfied with the amount of monetary compensation for the war dead, the woman leaves without a word. Leigh and Saturnois arrive moments later, and Crammevoix reveals to all his father's sin; that he sought honor with the Holy See, and bought it with the blood of the smallfolk and eventually his own. After being left adrift in Ishgard since the murders of his family, Crammevoix is inspired by Theomocent's will to leave the sins of the past behind, declaring himself a friend and ally in their cause. Meanwhile, Saturnois tells you that Briardien has been waiting for you at the cathedral with some new information.
  • You meet with Briardien, who tells you some concerning news about his investigation. Looking to inquire of Ulaa as to why she felt compelled to leave the scholasticate, he discovers that the girl has vanished altogether. Along with the missing volume eleven, Briardien comments that someone may indeed be trying to turn the situation to their advantage, and your duty as inspectors is to seek out the malicious forces at work.

  • Speak with Theomocent.
  • Speak with Theomocent in Foundation.

Journal

  • Briardien appears to be lost in thought.
  • Briardien tells you that while change has come to Ishgard, ill-feeling between the low- and highborn yet festers, with tensions rising by the day. The inspector is convinced that the recent hostilities are the result of a carefully laid plot conceived to further the interests of a party or parties unknown. Though he has yet to discover what their ultimate aim might be, he is not without a plan. Certain that the unexplained disappearances of Ulaa and volume eleven of the Articles of Halonic Polity are somehow related to the scheme, he declares his intent to find the missing girl by tracking down the missing book. While he continues to search for the tome, Briardien bids you inquire as to whether the students have heard anything concerning Ulaa's whereabouts or, failing that, observed any unusual goings on.
  • You speak with the students of the scholasticate, who are mostly preoccupied with their studies or else talking amongst themselves. As you continue making your rounds, however, it becomes clear that not everyone is present, and that two pupils in particular are notable by their absence. Ask Father Saturnois if he knows where Theomocent and Leigh might be.
  • Father Saturnois reveals that ever since Theomocent and Leigh learned of Ulaa's disappearance, they have devoted all of their energies to finding her, determined that she should resume her studies. With this apparently in mind, they begged leave to travel to Gorgagne Mills, and duly received it.
  • You arrive at the abandoned settlement to find Theomocent and Leigh kneeling in prayer. At your approach, the former rises to greet you, and reveals that Gorgagne Mills is the resting place of the boys' late mentor, Father Choisseau. He goes on to explain that the two of them often visit the grave when they are feeling lost or uncertain. Interpreting your unexpected arrival as a sign from on high, the two students seem satisfied that their time has been well spent, and resolve to return to the scholasticate forthwith. Follow in their footsteps, and report their deeds to Father Saturnois.
  • Upon learning what his two best pupils were doing in the western highlands, Father Saturnois seems wholly unsurprised, acknowledging that Theomocent and Leigh had always held the man who raised them close to their hearts. Far from feeling misled, he is pleased to see that their feelings for Father Choisseau are as strong as ever, and heartened by the concern they have shown for their fellow students.

Objectives

  • Speak with Saturnois in the scholasticate.

Journal

  • Father Saturnois wears a troubled frown...
  • According to Father Saturnois, the scholasticate is awash with rumors that Archombadin was complicit in Ulaa's disappearance. Reasoning that the youth would never involve himself in anything which might endanger his reputation, nor less bring dishonor to House Dzemael as a whole, he is convinced that an outsider must be responsible, and implores you to look into the matter. Wasting no time, he ushers you in the direction of Lebrassoir, who has been frantically searching for clues as to the identity of the true culprit.
  • Unsurprisingly, Lebrassoir is adamant that Archombadin had nothing to do with Ulaa's disappearance, and he duly bombards you with evidence of his friend's innocence. However, he soon catches himself and abruptly changes tack, and after making you swear to tell none but Briardien what he is about to divulge, he produces volume eleven of the Articles of Halonic Polity, which he confesses to having found in Archombadin's room. Insisting that Ulaa must somehow be responsible for both the recent rumors, and the sudden appearance of the book in the prefect's dormitory, he hands over the tome, and beseeches you to find Ulaa so that Archombadin's name might be cleared. Now would seem a good time to apprise Briardien of all that has occurred.
  • Briardien is both impressed and slightly flabbergasted to learn that you have found the missing volume. Though he is somewhat skeptical of the seminarians' grand conspiracy theories, he acknowledges that speculation will avail you naught, and that further investigation is in order. While he seeks to learn what he can from the tome, he bids you make your way to the Brume and see if any there know of Ulaa─or failing that, know of any unusual happenings, for one can never be too well-informed.
  • Some of the residents of the Brume are more forthcoming than others, and while none of their information seems to pertain directly to Ulaa, two accounts in particular give you pause─one of a poor man come into a small fortune, and another of a rich man offering far too much for a simple errand. Though it seems unlikely that these incidents have any connection to Ulaa's disappearance, perhaps Inspector Briardien will think otherwise.
  • Briardien informs you that Ulaa was the last person to have removed the book from the library─a fact which could lend credence to Lebrassoir's claims. Still, it is a far cry from conclusive evidence. Seeing as how the power of the Echo will avail you naught under these circumstances, you have no choice but to rely upon the traditional methods of continuing to search for clues and question persons of interest...

Objectives

  • Speak with Lebrassoir in the Pillars.
  • Deliver volume eleven of the Articles of Halonic Polity to Briardien.
  • Question the residents of the Brume.
  • Speak with Briardien.

  • Briardien is eager to continue his investigation.
  • Briardien declares that he will continue investigating your newest leads into the whereabouts of the missing Ulaa. In the meantime, he requests that you speak with some of the seminarians once more─namely his sister, Blaisie and the group she has been assisting with their own search. Though he is loath to admit it, the inspector seems to think that the youths may have noticed something you have overlooked thus far. But before you can learn what Blaisie knows, you will have to find her...
  • No one at the scholasticate seems to know exactly where Blaisie can be found, but a number of seminarians suggest that if you find Theomocent, she will not be far behind. As the young man is said to be somewhere in the vicinity of the Arc of the Venerable, that would seem to be the ideal location to begin your search.
  • You find Blaisie hiding behind a fountain, watching as Theomocent and his friends make their inquiries. Startled by your sudden appearance, she struggles to explain her behavior, but regains her composure upon realizing who you are. After introducing herself as Briardien's younger sister, she correctly deduces the purpose for which you have come and produces a scroll of considerable length containing countless testimonies she recently transcribed in an effort to ascertain the whereabouts of Ulaa. Just as Blaisie is about to turn the scroll over to you, however, Theomocent, Leigh, and Crammevoix suddenly appear, and you find yourselves reviewing the many accounts together. Yet you are unable to read even half of Blaisie's accounts before Leigh grows frustrated at their apparent lack of relevant information. Whether or not they contain aught of value remains to be seen, but that is for Briardien to decide, as the seminarians are more than happy to let the inspector sift through the endless accounts in their stead.
  • Briardien's efforts have borne fruit, it would seem, as he reveals to you that the gentleman seeking cough medicine and the tavern patron who paid his debts are likely one and the same. Once a notorious thug, now ostensibly reformed, he is rumored to have come into money and now makes a living as a traveling merchant. Needless to say, the inspector has every intention of tracking this suspect down, but he requires more information─which you are more than happy to provide in the form of Blaisie's notes. Together, you review the testimonies and eventually conclude that Mestonnaux, a merchant, has been engaged in suspicious activities. Your next course of action is thus decided: you and Briardien are to spy upon Mestonnaux, and see if he leads you to your suspect.

Objectives

  • Speak with the seminarians in the scholasticate.
  • Speak with Blaisie in the Pillars.
  • Deliver Blaisie's notes to Briardien at Saint Reymanaud's Cathedral.

  • Briardien is on the verge of a breakthrough.
  • Briardien is eager to find and tail the shifty merchant from Blaisie's notes, and believes that staking out Mestonnaux's food stall will allow you to accomplish just that. Seeing as he could show up any time to procure his standard selection of items from the carvery, the inspector urges you make haste and follow him to the Jeweled Crozier. Securing a secluded corner on the bustling street, the two of you keep an eye out for a scar-faced man swathed in silken robes.
  • As you stand watch at the Jeweled Crozier, a man fitting the description of the thug-turned-merchant appears, making a beeline for the food stall. Without taking his eyes off the merchant, Briardien begins pursuing the suspect with you in tow.
  • Briardien is waiting for you at the Arc of the Worthy. According to him, the man you are tailing just passed through the gates and entered the Coerthas central highlands. Curtly reminding you to take care not to be spotted, he bids you follow him.
  • Concealing yourselves behind a large tree, you and Briardien quietly observe a suspicious-looking carriage, into which the fake merchant disappeared but a moment ago. Taking note of the nearby guard, the inspector then asks you to create a diversion by announcing a surprise inspection of their wagon. While you distract the two men, he intends to gain entrance to the carriage and see what he can find. With the chat mode in Say, use your keyboard or the software keyboard to enter any phrase that contains the word “inspection” to draw the fake merchant and his guard's attention.
  • You immediately draw the attention of the fake merchant and his guard by announcing a surprise inspection of their carriage. Marching toward you, they advise you in no uncertain terms to be on your way. However, when it becomes clear you will not─or rather cannot─abide by their wishes, they turn hostile. Charging at you with weapons in hand, it looks as though the only way to stop them would be through force.
  • You overpower the two thugs, and see that they are restrained. As you turn to go and consult with the inspector on how to proceed, you notice he is hunched before a diminutive figure curled upon a thick blanket of Coerthan snow. Check if aught is amiss.
  • You rush over to Briardien who─in hushed tones─is comforting Ulaa. Aside from appearing slightly peaky, she looks to be uninjured. The inspector informs you that, as suspected, she had been abducted, held captive in the fake merchant's carriage. Shortly thereafter, a band of Temple Knights appears, inquiring as to what the earlier racket was about. Briardien quickly narrates the events that had transpired before handing the thug and his lackey over to them and escorting Ulaa back to the scholasticate dormitory.
  • Briardien meets with you at Saint Reymanaud's Cathedral and informs you that Ulaa is being tended to by Sister Gaetelle and is expected to make a full recovery. While she is currently in no condition to be questioned, the interrogation of the kidnappers is already well underway. Alas, it has yet to yield any substantial information regarding the identity of their employer. Though this case seems to grow more convoluted with every passing day, you and the inspector remain hopeful that the truth will eventually be brought to light.

Objectives

  • Keep an eye out for a suspicious-looking merchant in the Jeweled Crozier.
  • Speak with Briardien in Foundation.
  • Follow Briardien to the Coerthas central highlands.
  • With the chat mode in Say, enter “inspection” to draw the merchant and his guard's attention.

  • Briardien's eyes smolder with determination.
  • Ulaa's safe return has brought with it the revival of a certain vicious rumor. Once more, the seminarians whisper amongst themselves, accusing Archombadin of arranging the girl's kidnapping, and this time they are resolved to take justice into their own hands. When the headmistress calls for an emergency meeting, the student body takes full advantage of the lack of supervision and moves to call for Archombadin's removal from the scholasticate. Asking that you look into matters on his behalf, Briardien leaves you with Blaisie to pursue his own line of investigation.
  • The tension is palpable as the seminarians call for Archombadin's immediate expulsion. One youth is particularly vocal about seeing the prefect removed, and his frenzied shouts are quick to incite the other students gathered around. Her own efforts to do so having already failed, Blaisie asks you to attempt to ease the mounting tension. Perhaps you should start by trying to /soothe the stern seminarian.
  • While your soothing words have helped to calm the enraged seminarian, the possibility of not taking immediate action seems to have triggered a deep-seated fear of retribution from Archombadin in another. Help to /rally the terrified boy's spirits before the feeling begins to spread to the rest of the seminarians.
  • Upon hearing your words of encouragement, the young seminarian's fear dissipates and the floor finally opens for a calm discussion on how to proceed. Speak with Theomocent that the talk might commence.
  • The merciful moment of measured discussion and decorum is sadly short-lived, as Theomocent declines to lead the proposed charge on Archombadin. Accusations and insults fly, and a furious student body marches out of the room, intent on starting up a petition that will see the dormitory prefect expelled. A flabbergasted Theomocent, Leigh, Crammevoix, and Blaisie are left in their wake. Is there nothing that can be done to prevent further discord from taking root at the scholasticate?

  • Theomocent looks down and sighs in defeat.
  • The students come to the conclusion that your best chance at stopping the petition is to beat the angry mob to Father Saturnois and explain the situation to him. While Crammevoix and Blaisie stay behind to investigate a matter on their own, Leigh asks that you accompany him and Theomocent to Saint Reymanaud's Cathedral, that you might catch Father Saturnois upon his return from meeting with the headmistress.
  • To the surprise of all, Father Saturnois is already aware of why you have come. He then shocks everyone by calmly stating that he has already received the petition, and furthermore intends to throw his full support behind the proposal to expel Archombadin from the scholasticate. More disturbing still is his rationale for doing so: he does not necessarily believe the prefect was responsible for Ulaa's abduction, but wishes to make an example of him nevertheless. With a half-crazed gleam in his eye, he tells of his tragic past─how he, too, had been raised by Father Choisseau, and how he suffered the loss of his best friend and confidant. It would seem his belief that any who would refute the teachings of volume eleven bear responsibility for all of Ishgard's sins nigh borders on fanaticism. With Archombadin's fate all but sealed, perhaps the only person who can find a way out of this predicament is the very boy whose future hangs in the balance. Seek Archombadin out in the Pillars that you might discuss a plan.
  • Archombadin is irate to a point that Theomocent's best efforts to reason with him go completely ignored. Asking that you work your magic once more, Theomocent beseeches you to soothe the agitated Dzemael heir.
  • Your attempts to calm Archombadin's nerves serve only to further stoke his ire, and he turns to you, accusing Theomocent and Leigh of circulating rumors and letters to convict him of a crime he did not commit. Leigh and Theomocent review the documents, and observe they contain no actual evidence that Archombadin is responsible for the kidnapping. Seeing the two seminarians are as confused as he is, Archombadin begins to regain his composure. Not entirely convinced he arrogantly refuses your help in hunting down the true culprit─something Lebrassoir, on the other hand, is altogether too eager to receive. Imperiously ordering you to report back with any information you might find, he scuttles off in his friend's wake.

  • Theomocent deliberates on how best to proceed with the investigation.
  • Theomocent and Leigh have offered to assist Archombadin in identifying the individual behind the suspicious letters calling for his expulsion. Unfortunately, while all are eager to get investigating, no one is quite sure where to begin the search. Putting your heads together, however, you soon come up with a plan of attack: to collect as many letters as you can and compare them to see what you clues you might glean. Intent on getting to the bottom of the case once and for all, you return to the scholasticate.
  • You take a look around and speak with the seminarians─some of whom are able to confirm that not everyone received the suspicious letters. Having gathered a substantial stack of letters from both neglected corners of the scholasticate and students of scripture, meet up with Theomocent and Leigh to compare notes.
  • Together with Crammevoix and Blaisie, you read through the letters you have gathered. You quickly observe that there appear to be three distinct versions, all conveying a common message: that Archombadin should be expelled from the scholasticate immediately. You further surmise that it is highly likely that whoever distributed these letters is, in fact, none other than the true culprit behind Ulaa's abduction─a crime that appears to have been committed for the sole purpose of framing Archombadin. In light of this new evidence, you decide to make your way to the Vault to report to Inspector Briardien, who will undoubtedly be able to shed further light on the matter with his prodigious powers of deduction.
  • You share your findings with the inspector, who quickly deduces who is responsible for both the kidnapping and the letters. Knowing that you have come to the same conclusion as him, he reveals no more, but imparts upon those present a potent technique to induce laser-like focus and open the mind to all possible solutions. Equipped with this knowledge, you are now more than ready to face your man!

  • A satisfied smirk steals across Briardien's face, as all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place.
  • Briardien's astute deductions lead you to a clear, if startling, conclusion: that the perpetrator of these crimes has been in front of you this whole time. All clues point to Lebrassoir de Bonfaurt being the culprit, but without evidence to support your suspicions, there is no way to absolve Archombadin of his perceived guilt. When all seems lost, Theomocent steps forth with a plan as to how he might obtain a confession from your suspect. He asks that you accompany him to Dzemael Manor, where both Archombadin and his fast friend have taken shelter.
  • Thanks to Theomocent's ingenious ploy, you manage to trick Lebrassoir into confessing to his crimes. He proudly reveals that, spurred by long-held grievances against House Dzemael, he was the one who set in motion the turmoil that has taken hold of the scholasticate. Funneling a portion of the Dzemael heir's inheritance towards financing Ulaa's kidnapping, he then stirred up the rumors that Archombadin was to blame, and distributed the letters to strike the proverbial final blow. Though you may have finally ascertained the truth, the hour of the hearing which will determine Archombadin's fate is at hand, and Theomocent fears that events might take a further twist. Quickly make your way to the deacon's quarters with Lebrassoir in tow, that the truth might be presented before the council and Archombadin cleared of the false charges.
  • Soon after Lebrassoir confesses to his crimes before the deacon and Father Saturnois, Briardien bursts in with Temple Knight guards at either side. Pointing his finger at the scholasticate priest, he tells you that it was Saturnois who manipulated Lebrassoir into carrying out his schemes and that he is not the man he claims to be. Having suffered for years isolated from the outside world, and forced to work for Her Holy Body of Decency as a watchman consigned to monitor the expurgators─a terrible fate reserved solely for orphans who graduate from the scholasticate and enter the Holy See─he had intended to create a scandal so large, the outrage it would spark in the community would force the scholasticate into closure. He believed the establishment's demise would right some of the wrongs committed against him and others like him. While Archombadin's name has been cleared and it is clear he will not be expelled, Saturnois' revelation causes the deacon to question if the school itself should remain open. At the behest of the students, however, she instead holds a public hearing and divulges to the people of Ishgard the terrible tragedy suffered by both expurgator and watchman. Having turned over a new leaf by speaking the truth, the residents of the scholasticate are hopeful that it will rekindle the peoples' faith in their institution.
  • Briardien bids you thanks along with all the students of the scholasticate and tells you he will be swinging by Ul'dah to see someone special before moving on to solve his next mystery. While there is no doubt the students are sad to see the both of you go, they send you off with heartfelt good-byes and promise you that when you next return to Ishgard, they will have seen to it that the scholasticate has retaken its place as the nation's top establishment of higher learning.
