  • Raganfrid would like to introduce you to an old friend.
  • After hearing that you wish to be of help to Ala Gannha, Raganfrid suggests you may want to make the acquaintance of a friend. He speaks of a man named Sayer, one of the town's former quarriers, and the only one that has shown any real desire to revive the flagging industry. Raganfrid points you in his friend's direction and you head off to hear what he has to say.
  • The locals hurl strings of abuse at Sayer as he tries to plead his cause, eventually electing to leave him on his own. It soon becomes clear that he wishes to revitalize the quarry in order to bring prosperity back to the village. However, the lack of support Sayer has becomes abundantly obvious when you witness that even his own granddaughter does not believe in his dream.
  • Upon speaking with Sayer you learn that the quarry has become overrun with beasts, effectively making it unapproachable. Steadfast in his belief that the village would rally behind him if the quarry was free of danger, he asks you to expel the beasts from the area. You are instructed to bring back two urolith soulstones as proof that you have completed the task.
  • You successfully rid the quarry of the urolith threat and get your hands on the requested soulstones. All that remains now is to present them to Sayer.
  • Sayer remarks that he is glad to see you returned, but even gladder that you have brought the urolith soulstones with you. However, it yet remains to be seen if this alone will be enough to persuade the villagers to lend an ear to the old man's cause.

Objectives

  • Speak with Sayer.

  • Sayer is oddly confident about his plan's chances of success.
  • Sayer is steadfast in his belief that the villagers will come around after seeing the soulstones for themselves. However, he is not quite as confident in his ability to get them to hear him out. You are persuaded to approach the inhabitants of Ala Gannha on the old man's behalf.
  • You talk to a few of the villagers, enjoying varying degrees of failure. It is made abundantly clear that while you were more than capable of taking on a group of uroliths, most villagers are not. You begin to realize that the general consensus of the village has long been that there is no future in mining. Finally, you happen upon Sayer's granddaughter, Swetelove, once again and discover that she would like nothing more than for her grandfather to retire once and for all.
  • You return to Sayer to report that you have passed on word of the quarry's increased levels of safety. Regrettably, none of the villagers except Swetelove choose to follow you back to him. She does her best to convince her grandfather to give up on his dream of restoring the quarry, but her words only serve to further stoke the fires of Sayer's paranoia. Eventually Sayer gets so frustrated arguing that he storms off, leaving you and Swetelove alone. She bids you go and try to calm him down on her behalf.
  • You find Sayer mumbling to himself about youthful ignorance. Upon seeing you he quickly embarks on a trip down nostalgia lane, reminiscing about how the quarry used to provide for the entire village. It is these memories which convince him of a new solution to his current predicament: work songs. You contemplate this new plan's chances of success as the former quarrier becomes increasingly more confident in the power of music.

Objectives

  • Speak to the villagers on Sayer's behalf.
  • Report to Sayer.
  • Speak with Sayer.

  • Sayer is chuffed to bits with his new plan.
  • After Sayer has finished boasting about how wonderful his plan is, he proceeds to recite the famed work song that helped him stay strong while working. Sayer tells you to protect him while he investigates the site where he hopes to find the precious stone mentioned in the lyrics. Realizing there is no room to deny his pseudo-request, you prepare to set off for the Ziggurat.
  • Rendezvousing with Sayer, you learn that the area around the Ziggurat is home to a number of Qiqirn bandits. You ready your weapon and go on the hunt for any that may be lying in wait for you out of sight.
  • Having made quick work of all the bandits you can find, you decide it is safe to head back to Sayer. He thanks you for your efforts and quickly sets about getting to work himself.
  • Sayer soon unearths a small piece of ore which he believes may prove to be of value. the keen quarrier then hurries back to Ala Gannha, saying he will start examining the ore as soon as he is returned. You too decide to follow suit and embark on the journey back to the village.
  • Upon your return you are greeted by Sayer who remarks that the ore was but a worthless crystal fragment. Embarrassed by his mistake, he reflects that part of the song had already warned of such a trap. Just as Swetelove hears her grandfather reciting the work song, she recalls that there was an alternate version of the tune's lyrics. Sayer is buoyed by this revelation, daring to hope once more that success may yet be within his grasp.

Objectives

  • Speak with Sayer west of the Ziggurat.
  • Lie in wait at the designated location, and slay any Qiqirn bandits that appear.
  • Use the /beckon emote at the designated location.
  • Speak with Sayer in Ala Gannha.

  • Swetelove is warming up her pipes for a moving rendition of the alternate version of the quarrying work song.
  • Swetelove explains that the second version of the song was, despite its lack of popularity, her father's favorite. After she finishes reciting the differing lyrics, Sayer supposes that the ore may be located in the earth beneath Hidden Tear─the former site of a local graveyard. Your protection is once again requested as the area is said to be populated by vengeful spirits.
  • After rendezvousing with Sayer near Hidden Tear, it is painfully apparent that he is worried by the tales of specters haunting the area. He bids you go on ahead and dispatch any beings that may lurk in the shadows.
  • Initially it seems there is not a whole lot going on in the area, however, it does not take long for the somnambulant bhoots to show themselves. You eventually succeed in vanquishing them and decide to head back to Sayer to tell him the good news.
  • Sayer is most relieved to hear he can start searching without fear for his safety. You are bid to head on back to Ala Gannha without him and tell Swetelove that he is getting along just fine.
  • Sayer makes his grand return to the village the moment you finish calming Swetelove. Upon seeing the ore in question, the villagers immediately change their tune, vowing to help Sayer in his future endeavors. You leave the town behind, confident that it will someday recapture its former glory.

  • Brazen Brook needs help with a rather delicate situation.
  • As Brazen Brook tells it, a single man is responsible for the Alliance's effortless reclaiming of Ala Ghiri. the problem, however, is they are unable to bring this man in for inquiry. Afraid to speak more on the matter out in the open, he insists you speak with Baut, the person in question.
  • Baut is startled by your presence, but is soon relieved when you explain Brazen Brook sent you to help. the reason for his initial panic is made clear when he reveals that he is, in fact, a centurion of the Garlean forces. He ordered his men to retreat in lieu of a crushing defeat at the hands of the Alliance, but ran into an unexpected problem when attempting to turn himself in. to better explain his predicament, he insists you speak with the people of Ala Ghiri and hear what they have to say of him.
  • You speak with the people of Ala Ghiri, and their responses are not what one would expect. Baut appears to be well-liked, with some townsfolk being surprisingly protective of him. as the pieces of the puzzle slowly fall into place, you return to speak with him and confirm your findings.
  • Baut has found himself in a precarious position. Resigned to being a prisoner of war, the Alliance has yet to take him into custody for fear of a revolt from the villagers who have, for reasons unknown, grown to care for him like one of their own. Not wishing for them to come to harm, Baut asks for your help in persuading the villagers to allow for his peaceful surrender.

  • Baut is ready to get to the root of his problem.
  • Before trying to convince the townsfolk of anything, Baut would first learn why they choose to defend him so fiercely. to that end, he suggests the two of you split up and learn what you can about why they adore him so.
  • The people you speak with tell you of Baut's kindness and willingness to defend them from his fellow Garlean soldiers. One man, preoccupied with carrying cargo, suggests you speak with J'dyalani to learn more.
  • J'dyalani agrees to tell you about Baut under one condition: you must accompany her outside of town to exterminate spinners that have built a nest close by. with no other options, you concede and follow her out into the barren lands of Wightrock.
  • It is not long before you arrive at your destination. as you approach, she directs your attention to the spinner's nest, taking care to remain at a safe distance. You ready your blade and prepare to flush the beasts out of hiding.
  • Despite their numbers, the spinners are no match for you. Perhaps now you can finally learn why the villagers are so protective of Baut.
  • J'dyalani explains to you the hopeless situation the people of Ala Ghiri found themselves in, and how their living conditions quickly improved when Baut assumed command there. You wonder how he will react, knowing his actions are the source of their adoration.
  • When you explain to Baut the villagers' reasons for defending him, he begins by asserting he merely grew tired of his men abusing them. as his explanation continues, it becomes clear the real reason for his compassion: their suffering reminded him of his deceased wife and children who he had been fighting to rescue from life under Garlean rule. Putting his recollections aside, Baut is ready to move on to the next step of his plan─convincing the townsfolk that he is not worth protecting.

Objectives

  • Rendezvous with J'dyalani.

Journal

  • Baut has a plan to smear his reputation.
  • Baut intends to ruin the villagers' perception of him through a rumor of his own creation. Taking his ring in hand, he plans for you to go about town claiming he is the man responsible for the death of one of the village's holy men shortly after his arrival. Before setting the rumor to spinning, however, he suggests gauging the reaction of a single individual. the victim he has chosen is J'dyalani.
  • You show J'dyalani the ring and relay to her Baut's rumor. Her feigned shock is short-lived as she is certain you would never do anything to damage his reputation. She asks you to remind Baut that, regardless of any crimes he has committed in the past, the people of Ala Ghiri are only concerned with the kind-hearted man he has shown himself to be since arriving there.
  • Baut is disappointed to hear J'dyalani was able to see through his lie so easily. He asks you to speak with her once more, hoping she will help you convince the villagers with the truth rather than falsehoods. in the meantime, he will continue deliberating on his next course of action.
  • In light of Baut's situation, J'dyalani concedes that speaking with a member Alliance could potentially solve their problems. You mention that he has been working with Brazen Brook to arrange his surrender, and she grows concerned that his arrest─and execution─are imminent. She insists on speaking with Brazen Brook at once, hoping to convince him to spare Baut's life.
  • J'dyalani pleads for Baut's life, going so far as to offer herself in his stead. Brazen Brook can only answer her with confusion. He soon makes clear that they have no intentions of executing Baut. Rather, they need to question him regarding documents left behind by the Garleans after they fled Ala Ghiri. J'dyalani is pleased to hear this, and leaves to go share the good news.
  • You return to speak with Baut, but find only a note in his place. J'dyalani's eyes grow wide with horror as you read aloud the note's contents. Still haunted by the past, Baut means to end his own life, and asks that you deliver his head to the Allied forces. You must move quickly if you are to save him.

  • J'dyalani is not yet ready to give up on Baut.
  • Not wishing to waste time, J'dyalani rushes off to the location described in Baut's note─northwest on the path to the Fringes.
  • A pantera was preparing to rend the life from its willing victim just as you arrived. Your battle with the beast quickly ensues, and after a furious clash of claws and steel, it is at last brought low. with a sigh of relief you help Baut to his feet.
  • Baut is less than pleased that you intervened, and your bringing J'dyalani does little to ease his frustration. When you explain that the Alliance had no intentions of executing him, he scoffs at their offer of clemency, claiming he would find another way to end his life. J'dyalani pleads with him to reconsider, reminding him that the people of Ala Ghiri care a great deal about him. as he continues to lament that he has nothing left to live for, she surprises him with what sounds oddly like a profession of love. Baut is so taken aback he can only laugh in response. the mood now lightened, he concedes to your requests and agrees to speak with the Alliance, granted J'dyalani helps him explain to the villagers he will not be put to death. as you all return to Ala Ghiri, you decide to pay a visit to Brazen Brook to share with him the good news.
  • Brazen Brook is equal parts relieved and ecstatic to see that Baut has agreed to turn himself in. Moreover, the people of Ala Ghiri have not taken arms against the Allied forces in protest. He suspects there is still lingering mistrust of the Resistance and Eorzean Alliance, but he believes that, given time, Ala Ghiri will prosper as it once did so many years ago.

  • Sagar is concerned for a friend.
  • Sagar tells you of Berehta, a kind and caring woman of Coldhearth who seems oddly troubled of late. She refuses to speak with anyone, but she has always been fond of travelers. He asks you to speak with her in the hopes of getting her to open up.
  • Berehta has been thinking about her son, Erart, a young man of twenty summers who fled the village to avoid conscription by the Garleans. with the threat of the imperials gone, however, she is hoping he will someday return. Daunted by the dangers of the world outside Coldhearth, she asks you to inquire after him in her stead. She suggests stopping in Radiata, where he likely passed through on his escape to freedom.
  • You speak with the people of Radiata, and while most cannot recall meeting a man named Erart, the trail is not yet cold. One villager is fairly certain a man by the name Godafre will know who you are looking for.
  • Godafre indeed knows Erart. in fact, he helped hide him from the soldiers who came to Radiata in pursuit of him. Godafre goes on to say he and an acquaintance smuggled him north past Specula Imperatoris, but he knows not what happened next. with no other information to be had, you return to Coldhearth to let Berehta know her son seems to have fled to safety.
  • Relief is clear on Berehta's face when you relay to her what you learned of Erart. Though she is gladdened to hear he is safe, she cannot deny that she misses him.

Objectives

  • Speak with Berehta.
  • Gather information at Radiata.

  • Berehta cannot stop thinking about her son.
  • Knowing her son is safe is simply not enough for Berehta. She asks that you continue your search, suggesting you begin in Ala Ghiri, where he likely went to rest and gather supplies.
  • Speaking with the people of Ala Ghiri, it would seem the Allied forces may know something of Erart. Perhaps one of the Grand Company officers stationed there can offer more information as to his whereabouts.
  • You speak with a flame captain who confirms a man from Coldhearth fitting Erarts description is a part of his unit. Unfortunately, he has already been dispatched to Specula Imperatoris to dispense with the potential threat of Garlean drones. You set your sights north in hopes of meeting with him before he leaves elsewhere.
  • You arrive to find a golden-locked lieutenant who you are confident is the man you are looking for. Before he will take time to speak with you, however, he insists on completing the task set before him. to that end, you assist him in searching for any drones that may be hiding in the abandoned Garlean base.
  • After searching several locations as instructed by the lieutenant, you locate and destroy a number of malfunctioning drones. Perhaps now you can finally get answers.
  • The lieutenant is, in fact, from Coldhearth, but he is sadly not the man you were expecting. That said, he is certain the Resistance will know where Erart has escaped to.

Objectives

  • Gather information at Ala Ghiri.
  • Speak with the flame captain.
  • Search for the golden-locked lieutenant.
  • Survey the designated locations and destroy any malfunctioning bits that appear.

  • This golden-locked lieutenant seems to have something else to share with you.
  • While the lieutenant has no other information to offer you about Erart, he knows someone who can─Guntmar of the Resistance, who is quite knowledgeable of any and all happenings in the Peaks.
  • For a blessing, Guntmar not only knows Erart, but also the unit to which he has been assigned. He goes on to tell you that, at this very moment, they are making their way to Ala Mhigo. He suggests you make haste to Castrum Abania if you wish to catch up with them.
  • You finally track down the captain of Erart's unit. When you mention his name, the captain dithers about what to say next. You sincerely /doubt he has any reason to hesitate.
  • The captain eventually relents and tells you all. Erart assumed the identity of a wealthy Ala Mhigan merchant's son in order to infiltrate the Garleans' army. After a recent clash with the Allied forces, however, they lost contact with him. Assuming the worst, the captain was prepared to deliver a letter to his mother, penned by Erart in the event of his death. Having come so far for answers, the captain feels it appropriate that you take the letter to Berehta.
  • You deliver the letter to Berehta, explaining to her what became of Erart. Too overwhelmed by grief to even open the letter, she begs you a moment to regain her composure.

Objectives

  • Speak with Guntmar.
  • Speak with the Resistance captain.

  • Berehta is ready to read her son's parting words.
  • Berehta confesses she is too distraught to read Erart's letter, handing it to you to read in her stead. According to the missive, Erart left a gift for his mother with J'dyalani of Ala Ghiri. She has been instructed to hand over the package upon telling her it is time to “rekindle the flames of hope.” Unfit to make the journey herself, Berehta asks you to retrieve her son's parting gift.
  • You relay the secret message to J'dyalani as described in the letter, and she presents you with a small pouch. Berehta will be excited to see what is inside.
  • Berehta opens the pouch to reveal seeds and an accompanying note. It says they are date seeds from Garlemald, and will grow even in the most barren soil. as she leaves to inform the others of what she received, a mysterious figure steps in from the shadows, and reveals himself to be the allegedly deceased Erart. He believes his countrymen will not forgive his actions, even if they were for the sake of the Resistance, and so he faked his own death. He has resigned himself to traveling abroad to continue the fight against Garlemald in a distant land. to that end, he takes his leave, knowing Coldhearth rests in good hands.
  • You find Berehta in good spirits, ready to begin planting seeds. She invites you to return to Coldhearth when the date palms have grown, to partake of the fruit born from Erart's sacrifice.

  • Sagar still seems to be worried about Berehta.
  • Despite her earlier enthusiasm, Berehta seems to be troubled once again. Sagar asks you to speak with her in the hopes of resolving whatever new problem has presented itself.
  • Berehta wishes to thank J'dyalani for keeping the date seeds safe all this time. Having never ventured far from Coldhearth, she says she would feel safer accompanied by an adventurer accustomed to braving the wilds of Gyr Abania. and so, the two of you set out together toward Ala Ghiri.
  • While passing through Mount Yorn, you and Berehta are assaulted by a group of chapulis. You promptly trounce them and check to see if Berehta is unharmed.
  • Berehta remains without injury, but is duly unsettled seeing such creatures firsthand. After regaining her composure, she presses onward.
  • Berehta stops for a moment to take in the sight of Specula Imperatoris before continuing onward. Hopefully there are no soldiers lingering in the shadows.
  • You walk through the abandoned base with Berehta, who is on pins and needles all the while. Knowing she is halfway to Ala Ghiri motivates her to continue.
  • Just when Ala Ghiri is within sight, you are attacked by wild griffins. You make quick work of them then check on your travel companion.
  • You are glad to see that Berehta is fine, albeit somewhat shaken. but the danger is over. Together you walk through the gates of Ala Ghiri.
  • You introduce Berehta to J'dyalani and the two soon find themselves lost in conversation like old friends. Baut happens to be passing by, taking the opportunity to seek your advice. Weidheri is in dire need of dates to produce arak, a type of spirit unique to the Gyr Abanian region. This problem is soon rectified when Baut suggests the people of Ala Ghiri and Coldhearth work together in cultivating the seeds Berehta recently received. He then escorts Berehta back to Coldhearth that he can better assess how much work there is to be done.
