  • The people of Ishgard are in high spirits, for another heretic has answered for his crimes.
  • Justice has been done this day, as another trial by combat has concluded. According to one spectator, it was a fight for the ages, as the accused wielded a massive sword and worked his dark arts against his foe. in the end, however, he was no match for his opponent, who ran him through to a chorus of cheers. Seeing no need to afford the man a proper burial, the Temple Knights mean to dispose of the corpse by leaving it in the Brume. Intrigued by the spectator's account, you consider seeking out the knights and seeing this “demon” for yourself.
  • Kneeling before the body, you spy a crystal, and reach out to claim it. All at once, your body trembles, and a strangely familiar voice echoes in your ears. You collapse, and when you open your eyes, you find the woman standing before you, hale and healthy. She calls herself Fray, and it would seem that reports of her death were greatly exaggerated. She is intrigued when you tell her of the voice you heard, but before you can continue, a cry from the streets below draws your attention. You turn to leave, but Fray bars your path and insists that you discuss the “changes” you are undergoing due to touching her crystal.
  • The freedom to follow your heart─to defend the weak and punish the guilty as you see fit. This is the way of the dark knight, and Fray offers to teach you. You need only accept her guidance.

Objectives

  • Search for the Temple Knights in the Brume.
  • Speak with Fray.

  • Fray is ready to teach you. You need only ask.
  • Fray speaks to you of the first dark knight─a goodly knight who sacrificed all in order to bring an untouchable man to justice. Too many fear the consequences such actions will bring, and innocents suffer for our indecision, she says. Consider her words as you seek out the source of the earlier scream.
  • You come upon an old woman, who beseeches you to save her granddaughter─a spirited young woman who was seized by Temple Knights after an altercation. It soon becomes clear that she is not the first girl to be taken under such circumstances, and that the Temple Knights' intentions are anything but honorable. Fray observes that the girl might survive the ordeal─but she knows full well that you would rather punish the knights for their crimes. the decision is made. Make your plans with Fray.
  • Fray surmises that the Temple Knights will take the girl to the Supreme Sacred Tribunal of Halonic Inquisitory Doctrine. She bids you follow her to the Pillars and discuss your next course of action there.
  • Fear, pain, rage─these dark emotions make for a potent fuel, Fray tells you. Should things turn violent, you may need to draw upon this darkness to strike down your enemies. Prepare for the worst and search the Pillars for the Temple Knights.
  • Oh, how they screamed when you came for them. How their cries of anger turned to fear! How you bathed in the fires of your hatred to bring them to justice. Fray's words were music in your ears as they echoed in the Tribunal, as you promised them a reckoning should they dare speak of this day again...
  • As you tend to the girl afterwards, you ask if she recalls who it was that screamed your name when she was taken. She tells you, however, that only her grandmother cried out. Thanking you a final time, she hurries back towards the Brume, leaving you alone with Fray.
  • “You have done well,” Fray tells you. Far better than she could have hoped. but the risks will only increase as you walk further along the path. “Trust in me,” she asks, and you want to. You know that you need to... and that, when the time is right, she will be waiting for you where you first met. ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Fray upon reaching level 35.

  • Search for the screaming woman.
  • Speak with Fray.
  • Speak with Fray in the Pillars.
  • Search for the Temple Knights.

  • Fray has been waiting for you for a long time.
  • The voice, some say, is a beacon, guiding the dark knight to her true calling. as you grow more accustomed to drawing upon your darkside, you will come to hear the voice more clearly. Such are Fray's words to you when you ask her of the voice. Communion will hasten this process, she continues─but it cannot be conducted in Ishgard. Journey with Fray to Little Ala Mhigo in southern Thanalan.
  • “I want you to kill something for me,” Fray asks. “Something fearsome, which will push you to your limits.” She wants to watch you thrive in that moment. and you want to show her. Gundobald should know of a suitable creature.
  • It saddens you to see how weak and complacent Gundobald has grown, and how his cowardice has spread amongst his people. They fear to tread near the lairs of mere peistes. but you do not. At least he furnished you with aldgoat meat for bait.
  • Fray stands apart, waiting for you to show her who you are. Find a suitable location for the bait.
  • You feel her eyes upon you, expectant. Hungry─like yours. Where are those godsdamned peistes... ?
  • A dead peiste lies at your feet, and you feel alive. Somehow, you know Fray is smiling.
  • To mete out justice, one must be strong─a simple truth which you already knew, of course. You are ready for communion, but it will not be conducted here. South of Little Ala Mhigo─Fray is waiting for you there.
  • Fray bids you approach and begin the rite of communion. Close your eyes and hold out your hand. Breathe deep through your nose─let the air fill your lungs, then let it pass from your lips. Slower, slower...
  • In the abyss, a wanderer's voice sings to you. Forever moving, without rest or respite... Though its meaning yet eludes you, Fray tells you not to be discouraged, further adding that it might belong to an individual whom you are fated to seek out. If so, none can say how long it might take to find them... but the mere thought of the journey stirs something within you... ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Fray upon reaching level 40.

  • Fray is pleased to see you, as always.
  • Fray knows you have not heard the voice in some time, and so she hopes to help you as she did before. Join her in eastern Thanalan and prepare for communion.
  • It begins, as always, with an offering of blood. Seek out and slay axe beaks. Fray is watching.
  • Something is lacking, but you cannot say what. Well, it is done. Perhaps Fray will be satisfied.
  • A flicker of annoyance spasms across your face. How pointless, you think, and Fray smiles, for she knows your heart. Remember this feeling. Treasure it. It will serve you well in your next communion in Camp Drybone.
  • How dare Isembard interrupt our communion! as if pilgrims have not been kidnapped before! yet here you are again, forced to risk life and limb to rescue fools who should have armed themselves. All because there is no one else. So be it. Raid the Amalj'aa encampment and rescue the prisoners.
  • Fortunately, Amalj'aa are far better sport than peistes, eh!? and the beastmen were happy to keep coming, howling with rage for their fallen kin, no matter how many you slew! Fray's chuckling is infectious, and you find yourself sharing her grin.
  • Fray suggests you refrain from cleaning the blood from your equipment. Let Isembard see what you accomplished firsthand.
  • Isembard's eyes wander to the bloodstains, only to flee a moment later. You can hear the fear in his voice as he thanks you for saving the pilgrims. Fray ought to find that amusing.
  • Those who have never known true sacrifice quake at the sight of it. You know this because Fray knows this. Extend your hand and prepare for communion.
  • “Serve...
    Save...

    Slave...

    Slay...

” the voice drones on, each word resounding in your heart as the tapping of hammer and chisel. “Sacrifice is to renounce that which binds you,” Fray says. “To recognize that which matters─and forsake all that does not.” Serve...

    Save...

    Slave...

    Slay...

Fray knows you cannot continue to carry all these burdens. Heed her warning, before it is too late. ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Fray upon reaching level 45.

  • Fray was here long before you met.
  • Fray knows what is best for us, so we will do as she asks. We will wait for her outside the Gates of Judgement and say her name so she will know we are here.
  • A pair of knights hailing from Whitebrim Front overhear your summons and recognize you as the Warrior of Light. Seizing the opportunity to exploit the good nature of the fool who could not wait for her comrade and put this nonsense behind her forever, the knights convince you to help them deal with a band of giants. Head to Daniffen Pass and get it over with.
  • While your courageous new friends distract the dross, you will seek out and slay the leader. What a brilliant plan! Nothing like the countless other times we slew someone else's enemies.
  • You killed them. Well done. Can we go now?
  • Serve...
    Save...

    Slave...

    Slay...

You struggle to hear the words of the knights over the pounding in your head. It would seem that Lord Drillemont has summoned you to Whitebrim Front to discuss allegations which have been made against you, including the rather disturbing charge that you were observed conversing with a corpse. Nothing for it, then. Journey to Whitebrim Front and kill them all.
  • Darkness dwells within us all, but few are forced to confront it as you are. One moment, Fray stands before you, and in the next, it is your twin. as you wrestle for control with your darkside, the voices of Whitebrim Front cry out to you in support, even as your own voice belittles your struggle. and then... as quickly as it began, it ends. Your soul is in your keeping once more.
  • By Lord Drillemont's command, none will speak of what they saw─a gesture you find more comforting with every passing moment. Even after regaining your faculties, your memories of Fray are still muddled... and though your darkside has been subdued, it remains your constant companion, yearning to be free. • Apologizing for misjudging your character, the Temple Knight implores you to accompany him to the Behemoth's Dominion, as he has urgent need of one with your skills. Oblige the knight and lend what assistance you can.
  • Away from Whitebrim Front, the Temple Knight reveals his true intentions: to execute you for your crimes against his order. His comrades charge, swords bared, and so you have no choice but to defend yourself. After a brief struggle, you are once more left alone with the knight.
  • Even as he trembles with fear, the Temple Knight remains defiant, swearing to expose you for the abomination you are, even if it costs him his life. in that moment, a tall dark stranger approaches, offering to kill the knight in your stead. Before you can answer, the knight flees, leaving you with the stranger, who names himself Sidurgu, a dark knight who trained with Fray. Intrigued by your potential, he invites you to join him at the Forgotten Knight in Ishgard, where you might continue your conversation.
  • Recounting the story of the first dark knight, Sidurgu stresses that to walk his path is to live forever as an outcast. Presenting you with the sword of the man who tried to murder you, he declares that mercy is wasted on your foes. to further emphasize his point, he tells you of how the first Auri refugees to flee the imperial armies were attacked by Ishgardians, having been mistaken for Dravanians, and that even though the Au Ra showed mercy, the Ishgardians returned and slaughtered them all. as his voice trembles with rage, you take note of the young girl at his side. • Sidurgu would entreat a fellow dark knight for aid.
  • On his deathbed, Sidurgu's master spoke of a “flame in the abyss,” a concept which Sidurgu and Fray did not understand. in following the creed of their predecessors, they hoped that the meaning would become clear to them in time. Alas, when they intervened to save the life of a young girl, they were marked for death by the order. Fray was captured and executed in a trial by combat, leaving Sidurgu to care for Rielle by himself. Fearing that he cannot handle the task alone, he implores you to join his cause, and you agree. Perhaps now would be a good time to get to know Rielle.
  • Though somewhat standoffish, Rielle responds to your inquiries as best she can. Satisfied that you have established a rudimentary rapport, Sidurgu interrupts with his latest plan. Since the Temple Knights appear to be convinced that Rielle is some sort of abomination, Sidurgu would first determine if there is anything unusual about her. to that end, he proposes that you seek out a Vanu healer in the Sea of Clouds, as some are said to possess the ability to see their patients' aether. Rendezvous with him in Camp Cloudtop.
  • For the most part, the Vanu Vanu are disinclined to parley with outsiders. However, they may be willing to grant your request in exchange for a suitable offering. Sidurgu asks that you seek out and slay gastornis for their feathers, as it is said the Vanu use them in their rituals.
  • You procure the feathers with little difficulty. Journey now into Vanu territory and pray that you can find a healer willing to hear you out.
  • Fortuitously, you encounter a Vanu healer willing to examine Rielle in exchange for your offering of feathers. Arms held high, she begins chanting, her voice rising in intensity, until she gasps in surprise. a great spirit dwells within her, the healer begins─but before she can finish, she senses others following in your wake and flees. Turning towards the road, Sidurgu readies his sword and bids you search for your pursuers while he guards Rielle.
  • You come upon Temple Knights, who mark you for a foe at once. the battle is joined and soon ended. Return to Sidurgu and let him know what you found.
  • With the Vanu healer long gone, there is no reason to remain in the Sea of Clouds. Return to the Forgotten Knight with Sidurgu and Rielle.
  • Cursing the Temple Knights for their savagery, Sidurgu nearly flies into a rage, until Rielle's sudden apology for being the cause of your distress saps the dark knight of his anger. Though the motives of the Temple Knights yet remain a mystery, it is clear now that there is something rather unusual about the young girl they so fervently pursue. ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Sidurgu upon reaching level 54.

  • The words of the Vanu shaman yet trouble Sidurgu...
  • Who better to tell you more of the “great spirit” than those who commune with spirits regularly? for that reason, Sidurgu hopes that the conjurers of Stillglade Fane can offer insight into Rielle's condition. He notes that the road to Gridania will offer many opportunities for the Temple Knights to attack. At the very least, you should be safe as far as Camp Dragonhead.
  • Suspecting that the Temple Knights are nearby, Sidurgu offers to scout out the road to the Observatorium. Stay with Rielle and follow him at a distance.
  • Not long after you part ways, the Temple Knights attack, spurring you and Rielle to make haste to the Observatorium. Though the knights are no match for you, their numbers are legion, and you find yourself growing weary from the struggle. However, Rielle's conjury proves surprisingly potent, and you are able to fend off your attackers until you reach the safety of the Observatorium's walls.
  • Sidurgu chides himself for leaving your side and bids you make haste to Gridania, before the Temple Knights return with reinforcements. Seek out Brother E-Sumi-Yan at the Conjurers' Guild and beg his assistance.
  • After a cursory examination, Brother E-Sumi-Yan states that the Vanu shaman spoke true, after a fashion. Rielle's innate spiritual presence does indeed bear similarities to that of the elementals─and the Dravanians. Citing an ancient legend in which a man ingested the blood of dragons to become one himself, he speculates that Rielle may have partaken of the blood of an ancient Dravanian. Though Sidurgu is unnerved by the implication, Rielle's feelings are unclear, her face an unreadable mask. Before you embark for Ishgard, Brother E-Sumi-Yan suggests you rest a while at the Carline Canopy.
  • Frustrated by her silence in the face of Brother E-Sumi-Yan's suggestions, Sidurgu presses Rielle for an explanation. She pauses, and then, with a faraway look in her eyes, she speaks softly of her imprisonment in a windowless cell, with walls so thick she could not even hear the rain. She denies drinking dragon blood, and claims that she was never accused of such. as for their reasons, she intones that her captors simply said, “it's better this way.” Uncertain how to respond, Sidurgu excuses himself and steps outside, leaving you to look after Rielle until she has finished eating.
  • As you watch Rielle eat, you start to wonder how long she was kept in her cell, and how she passed the time in solitude. Afterwards, she thanks you for waiting and heads outside to find Sidurgu.
  • Eager to quit the forest, Sidurgu departs with Rielle. Return to the Forgotten Knight and speak with them there.
  • Blessedly, you and Sidurgu meet with no trouble on the road back to Ishgard. Recognizing that he has yet to adequately recompense you for your services, he resolves to share what knowledge of the dark arts he has with you. ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Sidurgu upon reaching level 56.

  • Sidurgu recognizes that desperate times call for desperate measures.
  • Sidurgu believes that if Rielle holds some affinity with the dragons, then the only way to be certain is to present her to a Dravanian. He believes this to be a nigh-impossible task─until you reveal that you have already parleyed with Vidofnir, that is. Journey to Anyx Trine and entreat the dragon for her aid.
  • Vidofnir studies your companions, her gaze lingering on Rielle a moment longer. She then asks that you bring an offering of gron ahlm as a gesture of goodwill. Discuss her request with Sidurgu.
  • Though puzzled by the request, Sidurgu accepts that it must be done. He and Rielle will search the lands to the north for the flowers, while you will search the south.
  • As Vidofnir warned, your attempt to harvest gron ahlm was not without incident. in any case, the flowers are now yours. Return to the dragon and see if your offering is sufficient.
  • Vidofnir tells you of a dragon on the verge of death in Mourn, who has the answers you seek. Present the flowers to the Dravanian and hearken to her words.
  • Through labored breaths, the dragon declares that the blood of her beloved flows strong in Rielle's veins. Furthermore, the fact that the girl has not succumbed to the blood suggests that it was passed on to her by her parents. Forced to accept the truth at last, Sidurgu despairs that the Temple Knights will never cease their pursuit of Rielle. He bemoans his inability to harness the abyss his master spoke of, which piques the dying dragon's curiosity. After learning the nature of your dark arts, the dragon chides you for your foolishness, stating that even the tiny beings who frolic in the mists of Sohm Al know a better way. Sidurgu presses her for details, but the dragon's energy is spent. No more answers will be had. Return to Ishgard and discuss what you have learned.
  • As you and Sidurgu weigh your options, a noblewoman strides into the Forgotten Knight and names you as the “knights” who would defy the will of Halone. Introducing herself as Ystride de Caulignont, she offers you a choice: trial by combat, or death for you and all who dare aid you. Seeing no alternative, Sidurgu grudgingly agrees. as Ystride turns to leave, Rielle at last cries out, revealing that she is Ystride's daughter. Incensed by her daughter's words, Ystride storms out of the tavern, and Sidurgu whirls about to confront Rielle. He demands to know why she never told him, shouting that he and Fray had a right to know─reminding her they bled for her, that Fray died for her. Shaken, she struggles to explain, but Sidurgu has heard enough. Refusing to look at Rielle, he bids you leave them for now, that he might have time to think. ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Sidurgu upon reaching level 58.

  • An anger you know all too well smolders within Sidurgu.
  • House Caulignont has long held strong ties with the Ishgardian Orthodox Church, allowing many of her sons and daughters to rise to great prominence within the clergy. Countess Ystride de Caulignont was poised to do the same, until she learned of her husband's heresy. When confronted, he proudly confessed to having consumed dragon blood for decades before draining a vial to complete his transformation and murder his wife. Though he was slain before he could do so, he nevertheless succeeded in tearing his family apart, for when the countess realized that his tainted blood had been passed on to their daughter, Rielle, she chose to confine her to a cell for fear of what the girl might become. Now fully aware of his foes' fanatical nature, Sidurgu would seize upon any advantage for the coming battle. Recalling the ancient dragon's words, he thinks to seek out the “tiny beings” who know a better way. He has no idea who they might be, but you have a sneaking suspicion that you do...
  • You summon Sidurgu and Rielle to Moghome and introduce them to Moggie, the second-most well-informed moogle in the village. However, rather than engaging the moogle, the normally reserved Rielle erupts, berating Sidurgu for his obsession with the darkness and his treatment of her. Moggie, believing that she has insight into the “flame in the abyss,” bids you and Sidurgu gather pomwort, while she and the other moogles look after Rielle.
  • Though the purpose is hardly clear to you, you gather pomwort as Moggie requested. Return to the moogle and present to her your bounty.
  • Having completed your first “trial,” Moggie bids you undertake a second. You and Sidurgu are to cull tulihands on the road to Asah. a curious trial, to be sure, but surely there is a method to the moogle's madness...
  • As you slay tulihand after tulihand, you begin to wonder if this is all simply pointless busywork. Join Sidurgu in Asah and see if he shares your suspicions.
  • In a shocking and altogether baffling turn of events, the moogles of Moghome reveal that they have kidnapped Rielle. Sidurgu predictably flies into a rage, and together you set about beating the moogles senseless. Afterwards, your comrade demands the return of his charge once more, only for the moogles to ask why. Sidurgu cites his oath as a dark knight, prompting the gathered moogles to burst into song, extolling the virtues of love. Speechless, the dark knight turns away, only to find Rielle safe and sound in the company of Moggie. At the moogle's behest, Rielle voices her feelings and accuses Sidurgu of helping her only to further his own quest for vengeance against the Temple Knights. After a moment, he acknowledges that she speaks true, but reminds her that they will not survive the coming trial without each other's aid. He states that what happens afterwards will be her decision, and his words seem to mollify the young girl.
  • Declaring your time spent in Moghome to have been an utter waste of time, Sidurgu returns to Ishgard together with Rielle. as you watch them depart, however, you are not entirely certain that you agree...
  • In the Forgotten Knight, Sidurgu reveals to you that he was among those first refugees to Ishgard, and that he watched helplessly as Temple Knights executed his parents without cause. He too would have died that day, were it not for the intervention of a dark knight, who would then become his mentor. Though he claimed to embrace noble ideals, he confesses that it was likely nothing more than an excuse to indulge in vengeance. Though he now believes himself unworthy to defend Rielle, he knows that she has no one else but you and him. for one last battle, at least, he will stand at her side... ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Sidurgu upon reaching level 60.

  • As Rielle thanks you for the time you shared together, you are struck by how much she has changed. the quiet, unassuming girl you first met has grown tremendously, shaped by her experiences on the road and the knights who have kept her safe. Sidurgu seems to see it as well, regarding her with a newfound respect. with nothing left to discuss, the knight bids you journey to Twinpools together and settle matters once and for all.
  • Desperate to find absolution in the death of her daughter, Countess Ystride quickly discards all pretense and commands wave after wave of Temple Knights to kill Rielle. Eventually, she attempts to carry out the deed herself, but you and Sidurgu manage to subdue her and kill her remaining knights. the dark knight stands poised to strike her down as well, but relents, reasoning that for all her crimes, she is still Rielle's mother. However, the countess declares that she will never stop hunting the girl, for it is the will of the Fury. Perhaps, in some corner of her heart, she knew it could only end like this. Rielle steps forward and tells Ystride that she will pray for her one last time, that she might find peace in Halone's halls. Grudgingly, Sidurgu readies his sword once more, and Rielle begins to administer the last rites to her mother. as the blade meets her neck, Ystride looks to her daughter, and for a moment, the hatred which consumed her is nowhere to be seen... After a time, Rielle says simply that you will return to Ishgard. Sparing a final glance for her mother, she turns and walks away.
  • In the end, it would seem that Rielle would rather remain in the company of Sidurgu─provided he continues to be more honest with her. He responds to her ultimatum in typical fashion, prompting you and Rielle to share a laugh. the two intend to remain in Ishgard for a time, as there are doubtless others in need of their help. but for whom will you stand? for your friends? for Eorzea? or perhaps, for the one within who is ever waiting to take the reins... ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Sidurgu once you have met the following requirements: ※ You must have registered a product key for FINAL FANTASY XIV: Stormblood to your service account. ※ You must have completed the main scenario quest “The Far Edge of Fate.”

  • Sidurgu is looking grim and dark as ever.
  • In the wake of the Dragonsong War, Ishgard enjoys a new era of peace and prosperity─an era that you were instrumental in bringing about through deeds great and small. yet the brighter the light, the deeper the shadow. There is still a need for those willing to disregard norms and laws and serve a higher purpose. a justice for all, at any cost, no matter how steep.
  • For all your victories, for all your accomplishments, you cannot turn your mind from the failures. from the mistakes and missteps, and the lives forever extinguished. for those we have lost...
    for those we have lost...

Sidurgu and Rielle find you deep in thought at the Last Vigil, and as you speak of past events, the sound of breaking glass rings out from everywhere and nowhere. Your soul crystal has split in twain, and you now hold only one half. a young boy with long flowing hair and a somber demeanor reveals himself to you as the party responsible, having sought to harness the aether of nearby natural sources for his own ends. Apologizing profusely, Myste promises to return it to you...

after he has used a portion to aid others. His purpose, he claims, is to free those touched by sadness and despair from their burdens. Sidurgu is incredulous, and rightfully so, for the boy is a liar, but you and Rielle are willing to go along with his plan. and so you go begin your search for people in need of succor in Foundation.
  • By the broken statue of Saint Valeroyant you observe a woman named Millie imploring a stonemason in vain to resume his work. After he leaves, you approach her and learn that she is the cousin of Ser Ignasse de Vesnaint, a knight of the Heavens' Ward whom you brought to justice along with his goodly brothers and their beloved archbishop. Sparing her that cruel truth, you listen as Millie tells you of her cousin's wish to restore the statue of Saint Valeroyant, and her desire to see it through in his honor. Alas, her cousin's reputation has become an impediment─predictably─and she lacks the necessary funds.
  • Myste knows you have found a poor unfortunate soul ere you speak. with a smile, he runs off to make the wrong things right.
  • Millie wants more than anything to see her cousin Ignasse again, but she knows she will not, for he walks in Halone's halls. Hearing this, Myste bids her think of him, of every moment and memory they shared, and to hold that image of him in her mind's eye... and then to go and wait for him in a quiet place. Hesitantly, she agrees, and you escort her to a garden to the south of the Tribunal in the Pillars.
  • Sidurgu, Rielle, and Myste soon join you in the garden, along with a most unexpected guest. Ser Ignasse de Vesnaint, honored knight of the Heavens' Ward, a man you know with the utmost certainty to be dead stands before you, alive and well. but surely such a thing cannot be possible? Millie is overjoyed to be reunited with her cousin, and they share a tender moment as he thanks her for her unwavering dedication to his dream. Regrettably, they dare not converse at length, for as a knight of the Heavens' Ward, he is at risk so long as he remains in Ishgard. Thus do your comrades depart for Falcon's Nest with Ser Ignasse.
  • Myste waits for you, alone, and tells you that the others have ventured out into the wastes of Coerthas. Time is of the essence, for the further they take Ignasse from Millie, the weaker he will become, the boy says.
  • The deception is lain bare. Ignasse was naught more than a simulacrum born of Millie's memories and your soul crystal's aether. as the memory fades, so too does the magick, and so the knight has been reduced to a swirling abyss. Deep within, you catch sight of a faint, flickering flame, and on the edge of hearing, a whisper speaks of secrets and sins and lies...
  • That which was taken has been reclaimed, but we are not yet whole. Myste has returned only a portion of your aether. Once more he entreats you for forgiveness, so desperately he desires it. Four more times must he do this. Four more times must he employ his powers to make broken men and women whole, so burdened by his deeds he is. Again you consent to the plan for... reasons. Sidurgu, defeated, bids you all return to Falcon's Nest to discuss your next step.
  • Sidurgu bemoans his lot as guardian of not one but two youths. yet times are changing, and perhaps dark knights must change with them and seek new ways to follow their creed. Four more times must you humor the boy to reclaim the remainder of your aether. But, for now, Sid could do with a drink. or a nap. or one, and then the other. ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Sidurgu upon reaching level 63.

  • Sidurgu is handling his new duties with characteristic aplomb.
  • It would seem that you and your comrades are determined to aid Myste in his strange crusade to help anyone and everyone. Having found no one suitable during their time in Falcon's Nest, you decide to head to Tailfeather and try your luck there.
  • Rielle learns from the hunters that a woman named Lowdy has recently been brought to Tailfeather from Falcon's Nest as a prisoner. She is to atone for her crimes through hard labor, though rumor has it that the proctor administering her sentence has been overzealous, both verbally and physically abusing her. Needless to say, that is your job, not his, and more importantly, she may be the sort of person that Myste can help.
  • Fate is ever the trickster. You overhear the most pious and venerable proctor berating his charge, and when you at last lay eyes on the prisoner, you realize it is none other than the woman who led the protest against the peace conference at Falcon's Nest, and poisoned your drink, which was not very sporting at all. Dear little Myste is moved by her plight and resolves to conjure her dead husband, even though she should know it for an illusion immediately. On the bright side, it falls to you to deal with the proctor while Sidurgu spirits away the prisoner.
  • No one can accuse you of not giving the man a chance. Fortunately, he was foolish enough not to take it. Do be sure to wipe the blood from your boots before meeting Sid.
  • Lowdy smiles and speaks of all the things she wishes she could say to her dead husband, but knows she cannot. a lie, however sweet, is nevertheless a lie. At her behest, Myste dispels his magick. but she is not upset. On the contrary, she understands and appreciates his kindness. Turning to you with a newfound sense of peace, she admits she once looked on you with hatred, but no longer. Fight, if it be your will, and if the gods show you favor, then so be it. and when we are called to account, so be it.
  • Her heart knows naught but guilt. Seeks naught but forgiveness. Ware the penitent, for theirs is a compulsion all consuming.
  • It is done, it is done. And, in spite of Lowdy's recognition of the farce, somehow effective. Myste is nevertheless troubled, as is his wont, though at least he is grateful. and you are still a good person, apparently. That's nice.
  • In the wake of events in the forest, Myste seems disinclined to continue his search at this time. Once more Sidurgu must play at being a surrogate father to the two children─or at the very least, a surly older brother. ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Sidurgu upon reaching level 65.

  • Sidurgu is about to make a suggestion he will immediately regret.
  • Myste remains inconsolable, unable to turn his thoughts from Lowdy and her plight. and so, in a fit of what can only be described as temporary insanity, Sidurgu has proposed that you return to Moghome. Apparently he hopes that the fresh air and the quiet might cheer the boy. Alternatively, he may long to punch a moogle in its furry little face.
  • After sparing a moment to put the fear of the gods into Moggie, Sidurgu suggests you go and look for Myste, who has wandered off somewhere to take in these familiar sights.
  • Myste stares out at the endless expanse and speaks of loss, which we know all too well. So, so many friends and loved ones. Close your eyes and you can see them pass, one by one, in solemn procession. a lesser woman would be tempted to forget, but we know better.
  • After reflection, Myste is ready to resume his search, and so Sidurgu declares it time to leave Moghome and never, ever return. Rielle, however, is unwilling to say good-bye, and over Sidurgu's protestations she takes Myste and heads north. Needless to say, you cannot abandon them to the wilderness and the three-headed goobbues that may be wandering about.
  • Well, at least Sid got to enjoy a spot of revenge by severely beating a few moogles half to death. Rielle and Myste are nowhere to be found; Sidurgu suggests you head directly to Asah while he circles around in case they strayed from the road.
  • You find the two children in a familiar place: the clearing where you and Sidurgu once fought a party of moogles who had pretended to kidnap Rielle for questionable reasons. Myste listens intently as Rielle tells him of how the dark knight loved and admired Ser Ompagne, his former master and caretaker, and when Sidurgu at last arrives, Myste asks him if he would like to see the fallen knight again. Sidurgu tells him yes, too late realizing the boy's intentions, and moments later you are confronted with another memory given form...
  • Sidurgu has long wondered why Ser Ompagne chose to adopt Fray and Sid, two orphan children, and train them as dark knights. After a spirited test of strength, the conjured memory reveals the truth that Sid has always known deep within his heart: that the former Temple Knight saw in him and Fray a chance to redeem himself for the countless young boys who fought and died under his command. a chance to create a lasting legacy and ensure that the world would be a better place for him having been in it. a chance for... forgiveness.
  • Now comes your part to cloak yourself in the fiction to breathe life into the dead to give words to the voiceless Mark well this moment, for she will learn from it...
  • The abyss is ours again, but again the boy holds back. Again he apologizes profusely. to his credit, Sid shows remarkable restraint, though that may be solely due to the many injuries inflicted upon him by Ser Ompagne...
  • As feared, Sidurgu will require some time to recover from his wounds. So poor is his condition that he is not even fit to make the journey back to Ishgard. Alas, this means that he must enjoy the company of the moogles at Moghome for the foreseeable future. but all is not lost─he did give you leave to punch a moogle for him. ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Myste upon reaching level 68.

  • Myste has been waiting for you for a long time.
  • Although Sidurgu has yet to recover from his injuries, Myste will wait no longer. He wants to resume his search for souls in need of succor, and he is willing to forgo their assistance, if you are. Anything to hasten the conclusion of this mad crusade. Castrum Oriens, the site of Ilberd's grand slaughter, may offer what you seek.
  • Myste grows weary at the sight of so many men and women willing to give their lives in service to a greater cause. a sight that is all too familiar, perhaps. Elsewhere shall we look for listless spirits.
  • In the depths of a cave by a flickering fire, a man sits alone, waiting to die. Gallien, an Ala Mhigan refugee for whom you once made medicine long, long ago, reveals that he shared it with another refugee, ensuring that the man lived... and that he would not. His friend Houdart went on to fight for the Griffin and even served as his body double, but ultimately died at Baelsar's Wall with his mad master and so many others. They made their choices, and such are the consequences, but Myste cannot help but meddle. He conjures a simulacrum of Houdart to comfort the dying man, who bids his dead friend to go to Rhalgr's Reach and pray for their fallen brothers.
  • The shade born of Gallien's memories tells you of how he always wanted to meet you, a larger-than-life hero... unaware that he eventually did at Little Ala Mhigo. He laments his fate, wishing he could go back and convince his former self not to place his trust in the Griffin... but if such things were possible, you wouldn't have a broken shield, now would you?
  • You rescue Houdart and Myste from wild beasts, but though they are unharmed, the shade abruptly stumbles and grips his head. Dizziness, he claims, and nothing more, before imploring you to hurry. He is as poor a liar as the boy.
  • Again Houdart falters, suddenly weak and in pain. a man's memories cannot outlive him, he says, and Gallien is running out of time. He will try his best to carry on, but in the end, it is not up to him...
  • Look how he burns with fervor, with desperation, with faith. How he sings of his homeland and wills himself to stand. How he marshals his strength to put one foot in front of the other. in that moment he lives again.
  • The spell is broken. Houdart is no more, which can only mean one thing: we are one step closer to ending this charade.
  • She is not the first, nor will she be the last to betray you. She will implore you to see reason, to seek solace in the fiction. and when you refuse, she will have no recourse but one. as I did not. Be ready.
  • The dead are forever beyond our reach, and we have no choice but to accept the inevitability that everyone we know and love will join them in time... or do we? Distraught by his failure to see Gallien's final wish fulfilled before his passing, Myste muses on the possibility of a world where time and death hold no power of us. a world you could share. You need only ask. but we know better.
  • Sidurgu is concerned that Myste's failure will spur him to deeper depths of depression. Even more concerning is the fact that the boy has yet to return to Ishgard, though you believed he would. Why, I do not know. the aether wanes, and he has but one chance left. Be ready, damn you. Be ready. ※The next dark knight quest will be available from Sidurgu upon reaching level 70.

  • You knew from the first that there was only one way this could end.
  • Sid has at last accepted that Myste is not coming back to Ishgard, and that if we are to reclaim the remainder of our stolen aether, we will need to take the initiative. Rhalgr's Reach was the last place you spoke, and so that is where we will go.
  • In speaking with the people of Rhalgr's Reach, we learn that Myste stayed there for a time, asking questions of a conjurer regarding aether and perhaps being responsible for the mysterious deaths of several chocobos. He's been naughty, to say the least.
  • Sid is unsure what to make of what we learned, though it seems fairly obvious to me what mischief the boy's been about. and you too, I hope. Anyway, it would seem that Myste was seen leaving the Reach and heading towards the Peaks. the hunt is on!
  • Two beasts, dead, with no discernable injuries. Now where have we heard that before? Sid finally realizes that the boy must have sucked them dry of their aether, in the same way that he stole our aether. Needless to say, he is far, far more dangerous than he appears. a pity it took you all this long to see it.
  • Wrong way, wrong way! He'll kill Sid and Rielle if we don't hurry!
  • And now, the betrayal. Myste believes that the only way we can atone for our sins is to “undo” them with his simulacrums. Every life we took, every death that weighs upon our soul, he would make amends for it all with his beautiful lies. I can end this charade, godsdammit, I can end it! Now is the time! You need me! YOU NEED ME!
  • ...

So it goes. If you would not forsake me, then of course you would not forsake him. and so...

neither can I. He is a fool, but he is our little fool. the little girl who wanted to make this cruel, twisted world a better place, futile as that is. She's going to get us killed one of these days...

but what can I say? I love her. I forgive her. and you...

  • Do you recall how we came to this place? At a friend's behest, in the midst of a raging blizzard? as we drew closer the gates faded into vision, and the towering spires... the man bowed low and bade us follow him, up the winding stair, from still smoldering ruin to untouched splendor. There we found a warm home and warm hearth, and warm hearts...
  • At the Last Vigil, as you reflect once more on the path you have walked, you are surprised by Lord Edmont, who greets you warmly. News of your exploits is delivered to Fortemps Manor daily, and you remain always in the thoughts of the former count and his family. Though a part of him wishes that you would remain in Ishgard, he knows that your destiny leads you elsewhere, for you are still a hero. You are still a good person.
