  • Tamachag is not in the best of spirits.
  • Tamachag asks you to aid some local Qestiri merchants that are being troubled by a foreign merchant. He explains that the Qestiri way is to show one's thoughts with actions in lieu of words─something the merchant is painfully unaware of. You head for the Qestiri khan's tent in search of the trader known as Gascot.
  • You come across Gascot in the midst of annoying a Qestiri girl that seems to be in charge of the marketplace. Once Gascot realizes you are not a competitor, he agrees to listen as you explain the local customs. Finally convinced talking will get him nowhere, Gascot agrees to leave the locals in peace and talk with you outside.
  • Gascot remarks that this is his first time talking with a fellow traveler in a long while. He goes on to explain that he has come to Reunion in the hope of starting a trading relationship with the Au Ra there. Admitting the faults with his initial approach, Gascot asks if you would be willing to help him learn more of the area's customs.

Journal

  • Gascot is raring to get started with his studies.
  • Gascot enlists your aid to find out more about how Qestir communicate with each other. Rather surprisingly, he is actually aware of his less-than-favorable reputation amongst the locals and feels your help is vital. You agree to lend him a hand and question the Au Ra in Reunion on his behalf.
  • Some of the locals are not especially keen to help when it becomes apparent you are assisting Gascot. However, you are still able to learn a few facts concerning Qestiri customs. Namely, that Reunion is a place where all Xaela put their tribal rivalries to one side to interact peacefully, and that the Qestir really do not ever speak.
  • Gascot listens to you intently as you share what you have learned. Taking to heart the idea that actions speak louder than words, Gascot resolves to greet everyone in the village, and asks that you meet with Cotota to earn her trust.
  • As instructed by Gascot, you approach Cotota in the hopes of gaining her trust. She initially seems confused by your approach, and just as you feel you are on the verge of a breakthrough, you are interrupted by none other than the blundering merchant himself. Gascot unleashes his interpretation of the Bomb Dance on his unsuspecting victims inside the khan's tent. Their response to this disturbance of the peace is unsurprisingly rather negative. Gascot bids you leave the area and regroup to consider just what went wrong.
  • While Gascot is aware his dance did not go down well, he is perplexed as to why. Supposedly he received a very favorable reception when he performed it in front of several Qestiri onlookers earlier. Regardless, he notes that the experience has at least taught him something about the local culture and he shall continue his endeavor to find a way of effectively expressing himself.

Objectives

  • Gather information in Reunion.
  • Report to Gascot.
  • Reassure Cotota with a wordless “You can trust /me.”

Journal

  • Poor Gascot just wants some Qestiri friends.
  • In light of Gascot's dance failing to capture the locals' hearts and minds, he suggests you try a different approach: improving his reputation with the other tribes first. Gascot believes advertising his wares in Reunion to a range of tribes will increase the demand for his goods, putting pressure on the Qestir to allow him to trade. You agree to help promote his goods to the Au Ra that have only recently come to Reunion.
  • A Gesi by the name of Jebei shows he is quite interested in trading with Gascot. He explains that his tribe values hunting above all else and would have use for Gascot's foreign weapons. You are also told that the Qestir are in constant need of oil to keep the lamps of Reunion alight. In light of this, Jebei encourages you to retrieve a lump of fat from a steppe gedan and present it to Cotota as a gesture of goodwill.
  • Having slain the beast mentioned by Jebei and collected its fat, you make your way back to Reunion to present the spoils to Gascot.
  • Gascot is pleased to see your venture was a success. He states that Jebei gave him some choice advice while you were away and that he is quite keen to follow it. You are bid to go and hand over the beast fat to Cotota on Gascot's behalf.
  • Cotota seems puzzled to see you again. You hand her the fat and explain the reason for your visit. However, her reaction is far from positive, and you cannot help but wonder if Jebei's advice to Gascot is somehow to blame.

Objectives

  • Speak with Au Ra that have recently arrived in Reunion.
  • Obtain fat from a steppe gedan.
  • Deliver the steppe gedan fat to Gascot.
  • Present the steppe gedan fat to Cotota.

  • Cotota is deep in thought.
  • Cotota returns the animal fat to you and bids you go and speak with the khan, Iturgen. You elect to present the fat to him and explain your current situation.
  • After you have finished explaining everything to Iturgen, he bids you head to the northeast. You are unsure as to why he would have you travel in said direction, but it seems he is quite keen that you do. Upon finding what seems to be the area he wished for you to visit, you decide to wait and see if anyone, or anything, else appears.
  • After waiting a short time you see Gascot meeting a group of Gesi that includes Jebei. They demand that Gascot furnish them with bombs which they plan to use to destroy Reunion. When Gascot declares he has no intention of supplying them with any weapons, the atmosphere turns sour and the Gesi move to attack the merchant.
  • You intervene in the nick of time, just barely saving Gascot from the Gesi assault. After you have dealt with the attackers, you go to see if your merchant friend is unharmed.
  • Tamachag joins you to put an end to Jebei's scheme once and for all. Cotota then hands you a vellum and infers she would like you to present it to Gascot. You leave in search of him as you realize he left the area while you were otherwise occupied.
  • When you eventually locate Gascot, he remarks that he has just finished saying his good-byes to the Au Ra that were so transfixed by his Bomb Dance. You hand him the vellum given to you by Cotota which Gascot immediately recognizes as a sign that he has been granted permission to trade in Reunion. Filled with enthusiasm anew, Gascot declares he will return to his office in Kugane and bring back with him wares that will enrich the marketplace. He bids you farewell and says he looks forward to the day when the two of you are reunited once more in Reunion.

  • Esugen hums quietly to himself as he works.
  • Esugen, the Dawn Throne culinarian, is in quite the predicament. Halfway through preparing food to feed the hungry Oroniri warriors, he realizes he has forgotten to obtain a key ingredient─sheep's milk. Were he to go and fetch this himself, he would fall behind schedule and find himself at the mercy of fifty hot-blooded, hungry men. To prevent any delays in serving the food, he asks that you go and bring back the milk of three sheep for him. He then directs you to speak with Sorocan to do just that.
  • Sorocan is appalled to learn that Esugen sent you to milk sheep in his stead and is convinced that he is attempting to shirk his responsibilities. Nevertheless, she allows you to proceed to the pen and collect sheep milk.
  • You approach three sheep and manage to fill all three of the pails full of milk, just as Esugen requested. Deliver them to the Oroniri culinarian.
  • Shortly after delivering the pails of milk to Esugen, the two of you are joined by a young man named Kuzuku, who seems to have come solely to taunt the local culinarian. Once he leaves, Esugen turns to you and reveals that as the weakest man in the village, he occupies the bottom rung in the Oroniri hierarchy. He, however, intends to become strong enough to rise from his lowly position, and asks that you help him with his cooking on occasion that he might find the time to train.

Objectives

  • Speak with Sorocan.
  • Obtain pails of fresh sheep's milk.

  • Esugen gives you a pleading look you know altogether too well.
  • The Oroniri warriors have invited their Budugan allies to dine with them and Esugen has been ordered to prepare a large banquet. He, however, lacks mammoth meat─the Budugan's favored meat. Due to his standing within his tribe he is unable to ask the warriors to procure some for him, thus he turns to you with pleading eyes and requests that you bring back two mammoth carcasses. Once you are done slaying the beasts, he would like for you to come find him at the Bridge of the High Rule Warriors, where he will be training.
  • You travel to the northeast and make quick work of two mammoths. This should more than suffice for the banquet. Take their carcasses to Esugen, who awaits your arrival at the Bridge of the High Rule Warriors.
  • You come upon Esugen, who is trying in vain to defend himself against a swarm of angry vilekin. Stepping in, you quickly dispatch of them. Despite the fact that the threat is now gone, Esugen is still trembling. Lend him a steadying hand.
  • You aid Esugen, who thanks you for your help. He then reveals to you that he is of delicate constitution and even performing what seem like mundane tasks often leaves him short of breath. While disappointed in the results of today, he is not yet ready to give up. He then bids you to meet him at the Dawn Throne and bring the two mammoth carcasses with you.
  • You deliver the carcasses to Esugen and, in doing so, have saved the banquet being held in honor of the Buduga. While he is disappointed by his own inability to conquer the swarm of vilekin that attacked him earlier, he intends to drown out his sorrows through cooking. He seems to have also come to the conclusion that instead of pursuing becoming strong it would be to the benefit of everyone for him to continue doing what he does best─providing good food.

Objectives

  • Slay two mammoths to obtain their carcasses.
  • Report to Esugen.
  • Aid Esugen.
  • Deliver the mammoth carcasses to Esugen.

  • Esugen has finished all his tasks for today.
  • Jelme, a young Oroniri boy informs Esugen and you of an upcoming tournament to be held among the brothers of the tribe. While reluctant to do so, the culinarian is required to participate and hastens off to train. As soon as your friend leaves, Jelme turns to you with a request on the tip of his tongue.
  • As Esugen continuously places last in all strength-based tournaments, in the days leading up to the match he often becomes depressed. Jelme, wanting to help lift his spirits, has written a letter of encouragement. He feels too embarrassed to deliver it himself, however, and requests that you take it to the culinarian in his stead.
  • Esugen is visibly moved by the touching words penned upon the letter. He would like to thank the young boy in person for the kind gesture and begins making his way back to the Dawn Throne with you in tow.
  • Esugen's joy is short-lived for not soon after you return to where Jelme is, you are joined by his brother, Kuzuku. After directing a few scathing remarks at the culinarian, he warns the young boy against associating with Esugen then leaves. More than Kuzuku's harsh words, however, Jelme is upset by Esugen's passive attitude. Begging him to learn to stand up for himself, the orphan storms off, leaving you and the stunned culinarian in his wake.
  • Seeing how upset Jelme was by Kuzuku's comments and his passive reaction to them, Esugen vows to no longer let people to walk all over him. He has steeled his resolve and intends to do his very best in the upcoming tournament.

  • Esugen wants to smooth things over with Jelme.
  • Esugen asks you to deliver boortsog─a delicious fried sweet─to Jelme as an apology for what occurred earlier. While he intends to also later seek the boy's forgiveness in person, he must first see to preparations for the main banquet, which is to take place after the tournament.
  • Jelme accepts the gift and tells you that he has long forgiven Esugen. At the moment he has a far more pressing matter on his mind: Kuzuku has fallen ill. The tournament is just around the corner and he worries for his brother's health and status. Asking that you thank Esugen on his behalf, he then scurries off to tend to Kuzuku.
  • Esugen learns from you that Kuzuku, who is to be his first opponent in the upcoming tournament, has taken ill. While initially tempted to take advantage of the situation, the elderly culinarian eventually decides against it for fear of hurting Jelme. Instead, he vows to help speed along Kuzuku's recovery by making him a medicinal stew. Promising this will be the last thing he asks of you, he hands you a sheep bone for bait and requests that you procure some circling bi fang breast meat.
  • As per Esugen's instructions, you place the sheep bone upon a boulder to the east of the Dawn Throne. Now all that is left for you to do is lie in wait and pounce upon the circling bi fang that appears.
  • You successfully slay the bi fang that swooped in from the skies. Esugen will no doubt be pleased by the beautiful cuts of breast meat you have obtained.
  • Upon receiving the meat, Esugen immediately sets to work and soon a pungent smell fills the air. Handing the potent herbal stew off to Jelme, he tells the young boy to go and feed it to Kuzuku while it is still hot. The young boy thanks the culinarian and rushes off to do just that.
  • Esugen tells you that even though he knows he will place last in the upcoming tournament, he is happy he decided to help Kuzuku. He goes on to say that your and Jelme's friendships mean a great deal to him and is what allowed him to realize his talents and revive his passion for cooking. Handing you some food he made specially for you, he sends you off with a smile.

  • Mauci is haunted by his past.
  • A young Dotharl named Mauci approaches you regarding his past. Despite being constantly told he is Mauci of the Seven and Seven Swords reincarnate, he cannot shake the feeling that he has no connection to the master swordsman. You agree to help him by asking the residents of Dotharl Khaa if Mauci is truly who everyone says he is.
  • You question a few of the locals and are told time and time again that Mauci most certainly is the reincarnation of his namesake. No other Dotharl were born the year the previous Mauci passed, and his poor swordsmanship is not enough to convince anyone that they could be wrong.
  • Mauci still seems unconvinced that he has been accurately named, but resolves to continue his sword training regardless. You agree to lend him your aid in the hope that it will lead to him improving as a swordsman.

Objectives

  • Gather information in Dotharl Khaa.
  • Report to Mauci.

  • Mauci is keen to study your technique.
  • Mauci has decided the best way to improve his own abilities is to study how you fight. He gathers some fatty meat from the village in the hopes of attracting a few Nhaama analas for you to slay. It does not take long for the creatures to approach and you promptly ready yourself for combat.
  • You make short work of the Nhaama analas, clearly impressing Mauci.
  • The young Dotharl learned plenty from watching you fight. He mentions that the village is hosting a practice tourney and that he will attempt to make use of what he has seen in it. You make your way back to Dotharl Khaa to monitor the boy's progress.
  • Sadly Mauci is defeated rather easily by his opponent. He hopes this will go some way to convincing the villagers that he is not and never will be skilled with a blade, but everyone remains steadfast in their belief that he is of the Seven and Seven Swords. Another young Dotharl named Khulan decides she has had enough of the crowd's comments, admonishing them on Mauci's behalf. Khulan introduces herself as an old friend of Mauci's, asking if you would be willing to help her improve Mauci's current situation.

  • Khulan is worried about her friend.
  • Khulan explains to you that the Dotharl khatun is in charge of identifying who newborns were in their past lives. However, even the khatun is not infallible, and Khulan is convinced she incorrectly identified Mauci as the reincarnation of Mauci of the Seven and Seven Swords. Mauci is frustrated by the continuing speculation regarding his identity and asks you accompany him to an area just outside Dotharl Khaa.
  • Mauci explains there is a hill to the north of the village that he likes to sit upon when he needs to reorganize his thoughts. As he is unarmed, you agree to make the trip with him and keep him safe from harm.
  • Mauci reaches his destination safe and sound thanks to your aid. You approach the Dotharl boy to lend an ear to his woes.
  • Mauci remarks that while he is grateful for Khulan's attention, he cannot help but be jealous of his friend and how comparatively simple her life has been. The village's expectations of Mauci have clearly taken their toll on the young Dotharl. He states that he no longer cares if he is able to wield a sword, he just desires the strength required to feel he belongs to his tribe.
  • As you prepare to return to Dotharl Khaa, you are set upon by a manzasiri. The beast is downed in the blink of an eye by none other than Mauci himself. The young Dotharl is not quite sure how he did it, but it seems he defeated the manzasiri with his bare fists.
  • Mauci has started to think he may be a much better fighter with his fists than he ever will be with a sword. He mentions that would like to confirm something and bids you head back to Dotharl Khaa to tell Khulan of his newfound strength. Khulan is initially shocked to see you returned without Mauci, but calms down when she hears of recent developments. Now that it is clear Mauci is skilled in hand-to-hand combat, Khulan is positive that her friend is not who the khatun judged him to be. She asks you to continue to lend her your help, that you might discover the truth behind Mauci's indentity.

  • Khulan has a point to prove.
  • Khulan declares that the time has come to prove once and for all that Mauci is not, and never was, a master swordsman. She bids you head to a cave to the west known as the Hundred-and-one Revelations to meet an Uyagiri udgan. While you make your way there, Khulan says she shall find Mauci and bring him along shortly.
  • You come face-to-face with the udgan known as Ibakha. She instantly realizes that it is not you with whom she has business, beckoning Mauci to join you in the cave. Ibakha is ultimately unable to tell Mauci anything of his past life, but advises him to accept the present for only it, and not history, will lead to his future.
  • Mauci, even more convinced his name is an ill fit, decides to tell the villagers that he is going to abandon training with a sword in favor of honing his hand-to-hand combat skills. Khulan suggests that Mauci slay a Matanga and bring back some of its fangs as proof of his newfound strength. You head with Mauci to the north in search of the creature.
  • Mauci asks you to keep any other creatures that appear at bay while he dispatches the Matanga. You keep watch for beasts while Mauci goes to lock horns with the creature.
  • There are initially no signs of any other beasts, but you choose to continue to keep watch just in case.
  • As expected, several beasts eventually appear and you make short work of them. Noticing that Mauci has successfully vanquished his foe as well, you head over to speak with him.
  • Mauci bids you return to the village without him as he still needs to collect a few of his foe's fangs. He also asks that you inform Khulan of his success, lest his friend be left worrying.
  • Khulan requests that the villagers all gather to listen to a message Mauci wishes to deliver to them. The troubled Dotharli boy declares to the crowd that he is not Mauci of the Seven and Seven Swords and will never again take up a blade. However, Mergen laughs this off, stating that not all the previous Maucis were skilled swordsmen. This leaves Mauci somewhat deflated as he realizes all his turmoil up until now had been for naught.
  • Mauci wishes he had been told sooner of his various past selves, but is relieved that his struggle is over at last. He thanks both you and Khulan for your help, Khulan remarking that she is glad her friend can remain in Dotharl Khaa.

  • Kishiligh would like your attention.
  • Kishiligh mentions that Mauci has been looking for you. It seems he wishes to discuss something he heard from the Uyagir. You set off in search of the young Dotharl.
  • Mauci has recently heard stories of a master culinarian that works at the Dawn Throne. Word has it his cooking is so good it can both cure illnesses and boost warriors' strength. You theorize he may be speaking of Esugen and go to meet with the Oronir on Mauci's behalf.
  • Speaking with Esugen, you learn that Kuzuku had been telling people of how the cook's soup had nursed him back to health. It seems this story made its way to the Uyagir, eventually reaching Mauci's ears as well. After explaining Mauci's situation to Esugen, he asks that you bring him baras meat. You go to meet with Mauci below the Azim Steppe.
  • Mauci gladly agrees to help you hunt several baras, noting that he is relieved to learn there is at least one Oronir willing to help their tribe's rivals.
  • After slaying three baras and obtaining their meat you go to rendezvous with Mauci by Azim Khaat.
  • Mauci was a bit overzealous and wound up slaying a grand total of five baras. However, he says that task has made him feel more convinced than ever that he was correct to abandon his sword for his fists. You gather up both your hauls of meat and take them to Esugen.
  • Esugen is impressed by the sheer volume of baras meat you bring to him, remarking that Mauci must have quite an appetite. He tells you to wait for him with Mauci as he will bring the food directly to you once he is done preparing it.
  • Esugen and Mauci get along very well despite their tribal rivalry. After exchanging a few compliments, Mauci asks if Esugen would be interested in accompanying him hunting sometime. Esugen is enthusiastic about the idea and you are thanked by the young Dotharl for all you have done to improve his life.
