Final Fantasy XI: Scars of Abyssea is the second of three "Battle Area Add-ons" for Final Fantasy XI released in 2010. It continues the adventures in the parallel universe of Abyssea across three new areas, and introduces new varieties of equipment, such as the head, legs and foot pieces in the iconic Empyrean Armor sets. Like Final Fantasy XI: Vision of Abyssea, the content of Scars of Abyssea caters mainly to players above level 75.

Scars of Abyssea requires players to have both Final Fantasy XI: Rise of the Zilart and Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess expansions registered and installed to play. Characters must be level 30 or above to access Abyssea-related content.

Service for Scars of Abyssea commenced on September 9, 2010 (JST).

Quests[]

Scars of Abyssea does not formally include missions, but contains quests that mark the main storyline of the Abyssea add-ons. Similar to Vision of Abyssea, this add-on does not come with battlefields or special Notorious Monsters, and all Notorious Monsters that are required to progress in the storyline come from NMs that are part of Abyssea battle system.

Other new quests are also available for players to undertake.

Characters[]

The adventurer and a number of non-playable characters take on significant roles in the Scars of Abyssea storyline.

  • Joachim is the first Abyssean who meets with the Adventurer. He introduces the Adventurer to the realm of Abyssea and serves as the first point of contact between the Adventurer and the survivors of his own world.
  • Gilgamesh of the parallel reality of Abyssea was once the pirate leader of Norg, but now serves as an officer of the resistance effort against the hordes of invading monsters.

FFXI - abyssea gilgamesh

Champions of Abyssea[]

After the adventurer rescues five Abyssea areas from the vile creatures that menace it, Joachim informs them that Gilgamesh wishes to meet with them again at the stone circle in La Theine Plateau.

Gilgamesh tries to reason the cause of the calamity that has befallen Abyssea. He explains that there once existed Champions of Abyssea, who were adventurers not unlike those found in Vana'diel. They, including the adventurer's own Abyssean alter-ego, have disappeared and Abyssea has been breaking down in a lattice pattern and the world has undergone radical changes. Gilgamesh fears that even worse events will soon transpire, resolving to seek answers from the "lil' mistress" and leaves.
