Uwee hee hee hee! Welcome, editors, to the Dragon's Neck Colosseum! My name is Ultros the receptionist, and each week I'm taking bets as to who will win in a tussle between two characters from the Final Fantasy series! The winner gets, well, nothing. It's more of a poll, really. The Colosseum owner stuck me on this duty after Kefka was defeated, but I need the money! So what are you waiting for? Get voting! Remember, you can remain anonymous! If you have any requests for future fights, please feel free to leave a message here.

The Rules, Briefly

Functionally, this is a popularity contest. You may vote for your favorite or who you think would win in an competition between the two combatants that week. You may vote only once. If you are a user, please include your vote in the user section. If you are not a user, please include your vote in the anonymous section. It is important to do this because user and anonymous votes carry different weight. Votes put in the wrong section will be deleted. Users who do not log in when they vote will be considered anonymous IPs, and their votes also will be deleted. You may either complain about the fight or vote, not both. When a new fight is created, generally once per week, the previous fight's votes will be totaled and its winner decided. Ties may be called if the victor won by a margin of 10% or less.

Week 102: Tifa v. Rinoa

Winner!!
undecided
Dark haired women with the word 'heart' in their name, just one of them in a more German sort of way.

Votes for Tifa Lockhart

  1. ScatheMote
  2. Major ouch for Rinoa - Henryacores^ 19:34, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
  3. Tifa is hotter, stronger, in a better game and less annoying than Rinoa. Drake Clawfang 19:38, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
  4. Jeppo: At least Tifa doesn't spend most of a disk in a coma!
  5. I may like Rinoa, but I consider Tifa to be the best heroine ever!!! BlueLionheart Cloudy Wolf (T/C) 21:50, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
  6. Duh. --SCM
  7. Terra_Homing: I love Tifa and not just because of her obvious assets, she's deep caring and friendly but could kick your arse in a heartbeat plus i prefer unrequited love to a gushy romance any day. I like Squall better then Cloud but Tifa's just great. She also serves alcohol :D.
  8. Super Sephiroth:Seriously, this contest is a no-brainer. Tifa is stronger, has a better weapon, has the better man, and, as all the fanboys say, she has large breasts. Oh, and she's not a bitch like Rinoa.
  9. Lost-myth 00:51, 12 January 2009 (UTC):I'm voting for Tifa cause i know more of her back story than Rinoa's, besides she fights with her fists not with a chakram.
  10. Tifa, hands down. Tex Howdy! 01:13, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

  1. Tifa! Tifa! Tifa! She's totally my idol and she knows how to kick ass. Also, her limit break is so much better than Rinoa's. Tifa's just awesome in every single way.
  2. tifa's the best female in the entire final fantasy universe way better than rinoa or any other female you can think of put that in your pipe and smoke it!
  3. I REALLY hate Rinoa. She really sucked in Final Fantasy VIII. Tifa isn't that great either, but she's still better than Rinoa.

Votes for Rinoa Heartilly

  1. Go Rinoa... :s Faethinverba volant
  2. Both are great. Rinoa is obviously going to lose, so I vote for her. Dark Raven
  3. Nothing against Tifa, but i prefer Rinoa Delta Red
  4. Free bird 20:36, 11 January 2009 (UTC): I vote for Rinoa. For some reason, I prefer her over Tifa.
  5. People, people! The laws of the universe tell us that Tifa has to lose at least once XD Alright, it is obvious everyone is going to get hypnotized by Tifa's giant Materias, so I'll save my dignity and vote for Rinoa ^^ Angel Wing+Meteor!!Winged Lion 22:13, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
  6. She brought down hell in Dead Fantasy. Netherith 22:21, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
  7. Aleria: She's pretty in a more classic way compared to Tifa...
  8. Template:BfDsig
  9. Rinoa > Tifa IMO.. Plus Rinoa is more stylish and dressed better Tifa copied her style and clothes in Advent Children! >:) - SilverSummonerTaLk

Week 101: Buster Sword v. Gunblade

Winner!!
GUNBLADE
47 ½ to 39 ½

Two of the most iconic weapons of all times, Final Fantasy speaking, if you had to take a gun to a knife fight or a knife to a gun fight or a sword to whatever kind of fight is the kind of fight you would or wouldn't want to fight with a sword, which would you bring?

Votes for Buster Sword

  1. Kloisien Strife: The Buster sword has a story behind it and also it's much more memorable than the gunblade, it's sitting still in front of midgar so solemn and glorious!!
  2. T·A·C·T·I·C·A·N·G·E·L - I like this sword so much better because SOLDIER is so cool and Squall is not an interesting hero.
  3. ChiefKakashi: Giant kitchen knives FTW.
  4. That sword is so cool the First Tsurugi is modeled after it! Cluna 06 04:47, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
  5. I have to vote for the Buster Sword, cause it was designed as a giant kitchen knife. lost-myth
  6. I like swords that don't massage the enemy. ScatheMote
  7. It's simple and cool. GoGoGo giant kitchen knife omg! Karura
  8. I like my swords how I like everything else in the world- not a giant vibrating dildo. arcanedude34
  9. Rydiaofmist: OMG Cloud is like soooo cool and Squall is teh suck!!!!11!!!1 Just kidding.  :) Anyways, I'm going with the Buster Sword because it is such a ridiculously large phallic object and I can't help but think that Cloud (and Zack for that matter) might be overcompensating a little bit by using it. The sword is so unrealistically huge that it looks kinda silly, and for that, I love it.
  10. Zack yeah , Buster Wsord was awesome. SO AWESOME. Plus gunblade is owned by Squall >.<
  11. Because TA's vote made me laugh. 8bit 21:29, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
  12. I may like the gunblade, but I love the Buster Sword. BlueLionheart Cloudy Wolf (T/C) 21:54, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
  13. Gamer2127
  14. Maybe if you used Seifer's gunblade as an example....but the fact remains that Buster Swords can be used as effective shields because they're so big. Still, they're the worst weapon in their game, so I vote for the Force Stealer. --Crazyswordsman 01:20, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
  15. lol...I haven't voted recently...The Buster Sword looks like a giant butcher knife and I love freakishly huge swords so it gets my vote...Chocolancer 01:40, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
  16. The Gunblade can't shoot, alright? Andthe Buster Sword makes more sense.--User:Super Sephiroth
  17. Chaos54956 04:21, 5 January 2009 (UTC) The sword speaks for itself. It's big, heavy, and sharp. What more could you ask for?
  18. Kareki: Um, Buster Sword. Passed through three awesome characters. And it's gigantic.
  19. Karhunkynsi 08:41, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
  20. Sora G. Strife: It cuts through buildings.
  21. Leon5550 This baby here cuts through buildings, killed 2 1st class SOLDIERS with Godly status, an entire army of Shinra Troopers, and even the Goddess of the Planet herself. Hell, it's pretty much the reason why heroes of nowadays RPGs usually have gigantic swords.
  22. ArableLadle : Gunblade is realy cool weapon but hey Angeal and Zack have used Buster Sword so realy have to go for it :D
  23. GunnerMatt 15:02, 5 January 2009 (UTC) Story of VII is the sword so it winz by over 9000
  24. --BigCubby 17:10, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
  25. Blackheart1991 01:37, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
  26. It's simpler. I like simple weaopns. -LeoLab 03:08, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
  27. Cloudiroth Good fight. Both weapons are quite awesome but I'm gona take the buster sword. despite it's oversizeness it appeared to be a fairly nimble weapon and the gunblade can't shoot long range. Bring on Omnislash Vs. Renzokuken (or however it's spelt).
  28. ChaosEsperVII: I'm pretty sure that SOME people are not voting for the buster sword simply cuz they hate cloud. I'm also pretty sure that one swing will shatter the gunblade into little pieces. People state the impracticality of using such a sword when they overlook that it is used by superhumans. If you are not superhuman then it is not to be used by you, just like if you don't have the strength of a marine you cannot wield a gatling gun, but that doesn't stop it from being cooler than a pistol. The buster sword will probably cut through anything including diamond because of its sheer weight, which CLoud/Angeal/Zack use to great effect. Also, the sword actually represents ideals and stuff like that. And yes Omnislash= best limit break.
  29. Lockhart: The Gunblade fails from false advertisement. Plus it just looks so much cooler.
  30. Marduk Kurios I like both Weapon Types, but I prefer Buster Swords~
  31. Masamune: I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in my life than when I learned that a weapon with the name "Gunblade" doesn't actually shoot.
  32. ULTIMAWEAPON - BUSTER SWORD BECAUSE ITS 20 TIMES BETTER THAN THE GUNBLADE
  33. FFVII rules but i still like VIII
  34. User:Clvabl Zack
  35. 1stclasswarrior 21:20, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
  36. MCMLXXXIV 16:36, 11 January 2009 (UTC): The Buster Sword is more original, really, because gunblades exist for a period of time, but never reached popularity because they sucked. Swinging a two by four will always hurt.

  1. . Definitely one of my favorite weapons! I especially like the redesign with the gold trim!
  2. . I've a dream of this sword!
  3. . Owning a Replica of FT, I gotta go with the buster sword. It actually has a decent lore surrounding it rather than the gunblade.
  4. . Which completely impractical weapons to vote for? I have to go with the Buster Sword simply because you'd just need a shitload of strength to hold it. The Gunblade's handle is at such an akward angle, it's blade should be on the other side, and WTF would that stupid revolver do?
  5. Buster sword ftw! It even has slots to put your materia in! Plus, Cloud's Limit Breaks > Squall's
  6. Buster Sword all the way (side note: it needs to be returned to its former glory!). No other weapon has the history like this sword does.
  7. I take Buster Sword for one reason : it belongs to Zack!

Votes for Gunblade

  1. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Buster Sword, and it is indeed an iconic Final Fantasy weapon, but the Gunblade left a far longer-lasting impression on me. I have the PlayArts versions of both swords, and when I have non-FF-literate friends over, they are all much more taken by the Gunblade as well. Gendreavus
  2. Summonerluna: The Buster Sword is nice, but the Gunblade is just plain awesome...Original, hard to master, and it definitely looks way cooler!
  3. Gunblade = kickass SilverSummonerTaLk
  4. Terra_Homing: Gunblade. Everytime.
  5. The Gunblade appeared in MORE games than the Buster Sword. It even appeared in a Final Fantasy VII game! Squallinoa 08 06:29, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
  6. Draga: I know the idea of the Gunblade is stupid, but it just looks so damn cool. Plus, Gilgamesh's one has a chocobo on it. You can't help but love it for that.
  7. Jammi568: Gunblade, because it's actually, you know, unique.
  8. Dark Raven:Both are ridicolous, the first one is way too heavy to carry, the second one has a gun but can't shoot. I'm choosing the one that looks cooler.
  9. Mr_Darkside Got to be the Gunblade
  10. Impratical, but pretty awesome. FF manages to pull together THE dumbest weapon idea ever and make it work. In short: Awesome. --Proto Fan 18:59, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
  11. Khakishro AS I WAS SAYING The Gunblade can be used to have unique techniques while the Buster Sword is just a sword nothing new.
  12. Mr. Rojo: The gunblade of course!!! I just love the gunblades and it's original owner :) Also, a gunblade it's a more original and cool idea than a super-size sword.
  13. The picture has a chocobo on it. Template:BfDsig
  14. Pikmin Master: As much as I hate guns as Kefka hates sand in his shoes, I perfer the gunblade over the Buster Sword. I can't just be walking around with a sword my arms can't carry. At least the Gunblade is one-handed. Besides, the Gunblade has elements of a Mario RPG. What else is to lose here?
  15. Clyde Arrowny: Uuuuh... Definitly hard secision for me... I think buster sword is more iconic for the series, but gunblade is much cooler!
  16. Copycatloki :: The Gunblade is shinier.
  17. Renzokuken ftw! - Henryacores^ 00:25, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
  18. Delta Red: The Gunblade is the badassest of all FF weapons. But why the hell they used the Chocobo GB in that pic?
  19. I saw an actual gunblade, fully functional, at a flea market once. I was very, VERY tempted to buy it. - DeadlySlashSword 03:45, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
  20. Sephron: GUNBLADE!!!just love the uniqueness of it..a cross between a sword and gun, definitely a clever idea..
  21. While I don't hate big giantic swords, any hot-headed young buck this side of Balamb can use one. The GunBlade is more special; it's looks cooler, and it can deal Criticals on demand(it also apparently gives godly accuracy). In short it's a badass weapon that actually requires skill and talent to use. Lastly it's an iconic weapon for What is is instead of Who uses it. --AnonyMan 06:31, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
  22. While I have nothing against the Buster Sword, a Gunblade unleashes an explosion when the trigger is pulled! It's just so kickass and original. Besides, Squall is still using it and Cloud's moved on to the First Tsurugi while the Buster Sword is sitting in the outskirts of Midgar. Tear, wear and rust? I know Angeal wouldn't be happy. Oops, ranting, anyway, Gunblade!Winged Lion 08:15, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
  23. Maverick Riot: This is such a hard choice! I'm going to go with the Gunblade though since in reality, many people just love the fact the Buster Sword is an oversized broadsword. That's it's only charm really. The Gunblade however has multiple features that are great, and has been reused and evolved in different forms in different games. The 'Giant Sword' idea wouldn't pull off very well again since everyone would instantly just think "it's a mimic of the Buster Sword."
  24. Sorry, but I don't see the point of using a sword a human being could naturally not wield. Gunblade are more... stylish. And have much more functions. And proof it's better, other gunblade than Squall's appeared in other games. Other huge sword don't. The only other enormous sword you see is the one Marche and Luso have on their artwork, but it doesn't count as it doesn't appear in-game. Alarielle
  25. This was an easier choice than I thought it would be. The Gunblade is an original weapon, that looks incredibly cool! Plus, the Buster Sowrd is just a copy of the Dragon Slayer. Rihya
  26. X-Neuro: It's a sword, with a gun tied to the end of it, what could beat that? LIONHEART!!!! That is all.
  27. MTC: If gunblades existed in the real world, then I would use it to kill all the bad guys!!!
  28. Pluto.: GunBlade for sure! The possibilities are endless.
  29. Netherith: A picture of all the gunblades together would be awesome. Like seeing a full shelving rack of guns it gives me a slight tingle inside. (way to come off creepy)
  30. Adam Mcduck: I don't see what's so special about the Buster Sword. It was a rubbish weapon in-game and all it is to me is a big sword with 2 holes in it - that's it. I liked tyhe gunblades, I thought they were very original.
  31. Imo, a gunblade is more iconic than a giant sword. There are characters outside FF that use giant swords, but none who use gunblades... Billylemmon 15:47, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
  32. recino Gee, a huge butter-knife or a sword with a freaking revolver on it tough choise (compleat and utter sarcasm)
  33. CrowBites Gunblade of course, it looks unique and is awesome.Besides Angel would not approve of his sword being used, as that could put wear and tear on his sword.
  34. BritBoy Gun + Sword = OMFG awesome
  35. Jeppo: A Gun that's got a blade. Now why didn't I think of that?
  36. I saw Cloud get blown up by Bahamut (YAY) but I also saw Squall shoot that one chic from the spirits within (WOOOOHOOOO)Poliwirl100 13:12, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
  37. Jakuro: I have to say that the gunblade would win this one. while yes the buster sword is bigger and thus heavier the way the gunblade is designed not only is there extra damage coming from the bullet, but if properly wielded it would also increase the power behind you swing making it faster and stronger.
  38. Kuja Tribal: The gunblade can have extended power on limit breaks, while the buster sword is but an oversized stupid sword.
  39. Vegna Gunner: The gunblade has more variety to it, with shot-slash combos, while all the Buster sword just cuts. Also, even if the gunblade was expensive to make and hard to use, you could still learn eventually, while the only way your going to learn to use a Buster sword is if you have muscles like weight lifters, but hen you'd be too slow to hit any one with it.
  40. Genesis rhapsodos: The gunblade is in the end a more appealing weapon to me. Plus you don't have to worry about "wear, tear, and rust". After all, they apparently know how to fix there weapons in FFVIII, something Shin-Ra never researched I guess.

  1. Dude a combination of a gun and a blade will pawn a plain sword everytime!
  2. I just like the gunblade better, it's kinda cool to think you can cut into someone and then press the trigger and put some shrapnel in them- Musashi
  3. Gunblades rock.
  4. The Buster Sword is cool, i'll never forget the first time I played FFVII with the ex-SOLDIER and his mega-sword... but I've to admit, the Gunblade design/concept is awesome! So...
  5. Both were cool but a gun could be used to finish someone off in style so i vote for the gunblade.
  6. Gunblade...How do you even hold the buster sword properly? I mean it looks REALLY heavy???
  7. I say the Gunblade, at least it's an original weapon where as the Buster Sword is just a big flat piece of scrap metal sharpened on side. It take's more skill to wield the Gunblade better then the Buster Sword.
  8. Although I love both weapons, the Buster Sword is basically a giant sword. The gunblade is a bit more orginal.
  9. Because the gunblade makes an awesome comeback in FFXIII as a fully operational gun and kickass sword!
  10. Gunblade, because it's more original. Buster Sword become iconic just because the developers intended to develop FF VII more than the others. Also 13 slashes of Omnislash is weaker than Renzokuken-Lionheart.
  11. I may hate Squall and love everything about Final Fantasy VII, but I have to admit that the Buster Sword is just a giant sword. The Gunblade, on the other hand, is a really cool idea. And Lightning's gunblade from FFXIII looks KICK-ASS
  12. The Gunblade is simply a superior weapon. I love FFVIII and if it wasn't for that game i would have never fallen in love with this amazing weapon.
  13. Deffinaly the one that can do extra trigger damage. Even though I own both I choose the one from the first FF I played.
  14. Duh if the guy with the buster sword came running at you you could just cap his ass.
  15. Hard choice! but i've seen the buster sword being stepped on so many times during the fight between Kadaj and Cloud, shows that it's not that effective in a battle. Gunblade...slimmer, lighter and way easier to manipulate to fight your battles.

Ironic that I suggested this and cannot vote. I'm not particularly fond of either weapon, though I don't hate them either. Hm...BTW, to all voters - it's Buster Sword vs Gunblade, not Cloud vs Squall, remember that. Drake Clawfang 03:22, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

At least that's the real Buster Sword, why's the Gunblade using the pic of Gilgamesh's fake one? AnonyMan
Master Conjurer: I was thinking the same thing. Whose idea was it to use that pic?

If Buster sword wins its because of FFVII fanboys. And if gunblade wins its because of people who hate FFVII fanboys... So i'm not voting.--Zephyrus11 16:25, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

What about people who actually don't consider this as a game fight/character fight, and as it is, a weapon fight ? I'm sure some VII fanboys can admit the gunblade rules Alarielle
Not all FF Fans are comprised of "VII Fanboy" and "Anit-VII Fanboy", give a little credit to you VIII haters and you X lovers. Anyway, point is that's not true. --AnonyMan 17:25, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Don't use Fans as an excuse for which one wins. This is a weapon fight. Not of the games or the characters. There have been other gunblades used in the FF series. And the Buster Sword was was also used other times. Vote for the one you like better. If your not voting because of the fans that's just silly. EmptySky 02:12, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
This is true, haters and lover fanboys only comprise of a small amount of fans. I'm pretty sure people like most games in the series because pretty much all the games are well made, just some are better liked than others. Although I think VII is the best of the series I will not defend it's faults and I think VIII is one of the better games despite such the depiction it was given. Most of the reason people dislike VII and subsequently Cloud is because of the bastard children of a Compilation (except Crisis Core). It's overdone, overexposed and falls into anime style storytelling, which the series is NOT. Honestly, when I played any of the games I did not think characters can achieve superman feats, even though main character can dice their opponent in a blink for their final limit breaks. Each game in the main series do not need sequels because they ARE good and sequels are mostly created to please fans, which usually have the exact opposite effect.
I wasn't really that serious. I am indeed a FFX fanboy, but I don't hate FF7 or its sequels/prequels. I also don't hate other fanboys or think that everyone is one. Whatever. Sorry if I offended anyone. --Zephyrus11 20:28, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
But unless if you are reading about this MTC

Although the Gunblade has seen other appearances in things beside FFVIII, most of thhem don't work like Squall's they actually shoot projectiles and don't work anything like his. Why must they try and make sense of the awesome?! --AnonyMan

Master Conjurer: Perhaps Squall's could fire projectiles and he was just too badass to use it that way.

I find it interesting and rather unfortunate that people think that gunblades are original in any way. Weapons combining guns with swords have exist for centuries and have been universally... well... ineffective. They make for generally a poor sword and an even poorer gun. T·A·C·T·I·C·A·N·G·E·L 23:48, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, but the gunblade was never meant to shoot bulets in the first place. All the gun bit does is to create the shockwave when you press R1 to deal extra damage. And it couldn't shoot bullets anyway, because it doesn't have a barrel to shoot the bullet along. Jammi568 00:39, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
See, the fact that it is a Sword with a Gun handle but does not actually shoot bullets (but instead creates explosions to add to the damage done by the weapon) is in itself very damn original. Everyone just asumed it shot bullets and never thought of any other way it might work. You may claim it's false advertisement or whatever, you still wouldn't have thought about it would you? Besides, if we think this through, Buster Sword is the weakest sword in FFVII, but the Gunblade is not specified, we could be talking Revolver or Lion Heart. And even so, the Revolver can still do high damage with appropiate junction. So do the math, by sheer numbers, the Gunblades are more useful.Winged Lion 06:32, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
Let me shatter your delusions here. If Gunblades are as goddamn effective and badass as you think, then why on The Holy Jesus' name no army on this planet at any time used this weapon at any point in history?!! Let me tell you why! 1st this gun cant shoot, making it no better than a sword. Second if it can shoot, the extremely long barrel will make the shots so slow that you might just as well use it for melee. Then, it'll be so goddamn heavy that not even Hercules and his Spartan descendants can lift it without crapping. Last, and certainly not least, the handle yes, see how curved it is? There is a reason why sword handles are straight, so that the sword's weight is distributed equally to the palm. The fact that the handle's curved like that and with the weight of the Gunblade, the 1st slash will be fast, strong and tear your hand off. But then again, a sword as big as a table is only meant to be decorations, so Buster sword is still no more useful than the Revolver. Hope that clears things up Leon5550
  • sigh* ... alright, let me explain some things here... I, my good sir, was under the impression that I was in a FINAL FANTASY wiki. Final Fantasy in itself is a series of games based mostly on FICTION. So, therefore, I believed any reasonable person who read my comment would assume I was talking about the FINAL FANTASY WORLD (Final Fantasy=Not reality). However, I seem to have somehow failed to make myself clear so, in short: I was talking about the Gunblade concept as it exists in the FICTIONAL world of Final FANTASY. As you may be aware of, FICTIONAL characters such as Squall or Cloud are not affected by the same laws of physics as we are, which explains why Cloud can jump a gazillion miles in the air and why the Gunblade works. At no point in my last comment did I mention "real" Gunblades as opossed to FF Gunblades, I was simply commenting on how the concept of Gunblade as handled in FFVIII was indeed original. Thank you, and I hope we never have to go through this exercise again. For people who are actually trying to make sense according to reality when speaking about Final Fantasy: It's called "suspension of disbelief".Winged Lion 09:39, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

I would like to point out that the idea of a gunblade is not to function as both a sword and a gun but to function as a vibro blade. The ingition of the cartridge in the hangle causes a jolt to pass through the blade. If timed correctly, this jolt can greatly increase the damage inlicted by the blade as it widens the wound caused by the initial stike. This is actually a possible, viable and dangerous weapon, but the sheer amount of money that it would require to research, perfect and make one, along with the near-impossiblilty of being able to get the ignition timing right and the fact that it's a god-dammed melee weapon in a world (this one) where swords are all but obsolete. In theory it would work, but so would a normal sword, and normal swords are cheaper. RedMage
