DNC Logo Idear


Uwee hee hee hee! Welcome, editors, to the Dragon's Neck Colosseum! My name is Ultros the receptionist, and each week I'm taking bets as to who will win in a tussle between two characters from the Final Fantasy series! The winner gets, well, nothing. It's more of a poll, really. The Colosseum owner stuck me on this duty after Kefka was defeated, but I need the money! So what are you waiting for? Get voting! Remember, you can remain anonymous! If you have any requests for future fights, please feel free to leave a message here.

Functionally, this is a popularity contest. You may vote for your favorite or who you think would win in an competition between the two combatants that week.

Aerith died, yet still lives, she was able to call upon both HOLY and the LIFESTREAM against a meteor that almost destroyed the planet, she was also able to heal GEOSTIGMA, i think Aerith is the ultimate White Mage, and a match such as this, i think she could outlast Yuna's summons and anything she can throw at her. They both have traits that are appealing to me, like Aerith being able to fight even after death, and Yuna having her Aeons, which are really great, so it's hard to decide, who to vote for. They even share the same theme of longing for someone beloved they lost! But since Yuna just kinda accepted Tidus disappearance and continued to live on, and Aerith actually wrote a total of 89 letters to Zack, believing he'd come back one day...   23. The Rood Inverse Though I like them both, storiwise and powerwise, I like Aerith the moste. The fact that she died and the fact of FFX-2 are the factors that sement my vote.
  24. Aerith by a mile. Yuna was too much of a "Mary-Sue" for me in FFX AND FFX-2. Not only that, but Aerith was stronger IMO. She was happy and upbeat but not too happy and perky. (For all those that didn't know who or what a Mary-Sue is, it's basically a character that is presented with no flaws at all and she's the talk of the whole game setting, or is at least very famous and that everyone likes her.   33. I'll simply compare their most impressive memorable moments. Most White Mages have saved a party a few times; Aeris saved a whole planet and did it (spoiler alert- and we all know which one, right?) while she was dead. Yuna's most impressive such moment was the Trigger Happy backflip in X-2, but despite this, Vincent is still the best Gunner in the series- Yuna fired two full mags for each Tiny Bee (one before and one during the backflip) and didn't hit Ormi OR Logos; had Vincent done that, Ormi's and Logos' heads would've resembled Swiss cheese. So, in case it's still unclear, Aeris wins that. (If it'd been spelled Aerith, however, I would likely have voted for Yuna.) The.DreadnoughT 20:39, May 18, 2010 (UTC)

  36. User:Cloudgauntlet Aeris had so much more personality than Yuna. Yuna was just the typical softspoken, boring white mage type (I know she was a summoner), whereas Aeris was spunky, fiery and mischievous, and just seemed way more real. I agree that she was more believable over the oh-so-perfect Yuna, who everybody instantly loved. Plus later on Yuna's whole life revolved around one guy and she turned into a slutty lovelorn teenager when Aeris was a billion times more mature, and always knew that she would have to sacrifice herself even though she wanted to stay with Cloud and her other friends. Oh and Aeris/Cloud? Was implied, not made so obvious as Yuna and Tidus... not to mention, how could someone fall for someone as irritating as Tidus? Sure Yuna can summon but she ended up choosing NOT to sacrifice herself whereas Aeris was willing to if it meant that shecould help the world. Not to mention, VII is by FAAAAAR the superior game.

  45. Well, since Yuna can't fully restore the party's HP and MP, remove all negative status effects, and make them temporarily invincible -all in one move-, I'm gonna' have to go with Aerith on this one. Besides, she wasn't nearly as whiny as Yuna. GenjiMasamune

  50. recinoWow a match I sugested about a year ago finaly got in. Lol. Anywho, AERIS(never "Aerith") and Yuna both have the potential in the games they came from to be super powerfull depending on the matiria/sphers they have. So this becomes a fight of who I liked better. - And since Aeris had a beautiful death a kick ass theam and she can hold her own in a fight V.s.   20. Aeris was renamed for no reason, spends about the whole game freaking out and talking like a psycho, is a worthless fighter no matter how you put it and dies on the first disc. Ok...well I THOUGHT we were voting on who would win in a fight...but it seems it turned into a popularity contest...there is NO WAY Aeris (or Aerith...w/e) would beat just about anyone...her stats are just far too weak. And what's with all this animosity towards X-2? In terms of the battle system and gameplay, I liked it much, much better than X, the re-addition of the ATB gauge was a welcome sight, and thanks to it the flow of the game was much quicker.   29. In my opinion, Yuna has Aerith beat. I mean, not only can she heal, but she can summon Valefor, Ifrit, Ixion, Shiva, Magus Sisters, Yojimbo, Bahamut, and Anima!!!! Several of those Aeons can kill you in one hit and you can't deny that most of the Aeons looked freakin awesome!!! Aerith has nothing on her because she was weak to begin with and died by the end of the game. Plus, X-2 made her look incredibly sexy no matter what dressphere you put her in(and is adorable in the Moogle costume).Golbez91

  42. Assuming it's Final Fantasy X Yuna and not X-2 Yuna, then definitely. In X, Yuna was invaluable for EVERYTHING. She did over 20k damage with Holy once she got her fully upgraded Nirvana. Heck, I made her solo Omega Weapon! And not the puny one, the PAL one with ten times as much hp. And last but not least, even if she was solely a Summoner, she'd obliterate every other Summoner out there. Even Rydia. I love you, PAL games. Intercision 15:52, May 21, 2010 (UTC)

Assuming they're fighting with the stats, rules, and limitations of their respective games, Yuna would wipe the floor with Aeris. True, both have great mage stats and can both (potentially) cast white and black magic. I find it odd as well. There's really nothing to make a stink about. The "original" name was not the intention of the source material. Therefore, it can hardly be said to have been "changed." I don't view this as a technicality or being pedantic--these terms are just plain being used wrong. That being said, vote criticisms! [b]Aerith supporters:[/b] You really shouldn't go on about Aerith saving the entire world from beyond the grave, then turn around & call Yuna a Mary Sue. It just makes no sense. I don't really want to inflame this debate, but I can't resist the urge to point out that Aeris's birth and naming are, in an odd sort of way, part of the storyline (think Gast's recordings at Icicle Inn). One could argue that her name itself therefore counts as a part of the storyline, sort of, and thus it qualifies to be called a retcon. I'll respond anyway: Even taking all of that logic into account, Aerith's name was always meant to be Aerith. It wasn't changed within the confines of the story, it was changed due to outside circumstances, namely, a translation error. Ergo, it isn't a true retcon. Neo Bahamut, The point of the Yuna voters mentioning black magic and summons is that Yuna is more effective/versatile in those roles by the end of X than Aerith is when she dies (possibly excluding long time grinders). I understand the gameplay convention (characters get stronger as the game progresses), but if you're just comparing the 2 characters overall, Yuna is 17 at the end of X, while Aerith is 22. At 17, Yuna has fully controllable aeons, flare, doublecast, etc. Imagine how much more powerful she'll be at 22 (even counting the fact that she had to destroy her friends the aeons at the end of X). Definitely much stronger than Aerith as a mage by then. As for stupid votes, both sides have much dumber votes including I hate (Yuna/Aerith, VII/X/X-2) and (Yuna/Aerith) is hot (without any additional explanation or reasons). But the Aerith voters are worse. For example, Yuna is perfect is a reason for voting against Yuna, "Aerith can do more damage than Yuna (if they're the same level)," and "Yuna just accepted Tidus disappearance; Aerith didn't just accept Zack's." Characters don't level in X, they have the sphere grid to increase stats, learn abilities, etc. The only reasonable comparison is the end of the game, or when Yuna is 22, which we don't know about, but it's reasonable to assume that she wouldn't get weaker. Yuna should therefore be stronger either way. Disliking someone for being perfect/popular/likable is just as bad as disliking someone for not being popular. As for Yuna just accepting Tidus' disappearance, there's this game called Final Fantasy X-2, where she saves the world while on a quest to get him back (and may or may not actually succeed). Writing letters is really, really weak dedication compared to that. Even worse, someone voted for Aerith because that character had fewer votes (and that character now has more votes). Well, because neither of those are true. Shuyin only mistaked Yuna for Lenne. After realizing they were different people, he went all, GTFO I'm gonna blow up Spira. As for Aerith, literally the only place in the entire Compilation where she ever says she saw Zack in Cloud, she turns around & notes she liked things about him that Zack didn't have. This was missed by many people who aggressively latched onto one of the details, claiming that it's been "proven" that Aerith did/not love Cloud, a trend that continues with every new commentary on the love triangle. Apparently, the phrase "up to your own interpretation" is some kind of completely alien concept that has no business in the minds of fans. ...Mkay, that came across quite aggressive but hey, I never like Aerith, never had her in my party (even though she still managed to date Cloud.) Crisis Core suggested heavily that she loved Cloud because he reminded her of Zack. Checking the timelines, Cloud believed him and Zack to be roughly one person more or less. He only snapped out of this after Aerith died during the events in Mideel when he finally broke free of his mental trauma. Soooo, assuming him to be unstable for the duration of Aerith's life he had no control over this and to some extent, she took advantage, whether this was intentional or not is debatable, still she wasn't exactly all sugar and rainbows. And let's face it Yuna was a lot more 'good' in that she saved Spira twice, Aerith barely managed to prevent meteor, let alone top Sephiroth.Mog&Boko 15:24, May 19, 2010 (UTC)
You know, come to think of it, the Lifestream gathering where it did may just have been lucky coincidence; the Planet sensed it's "life" in danger, and was going to spawn Omega. Fortunately for the people living on that planet (and unfortunately for Omega) it happened to be spawning in the exact place where Meteor would've hit, and the Lifestream's gathering there prevented Meteor's impact, thus eliminating the threat to the Planet and stopping the process of Omega's spawning (which saved the Planet's inhabitants from a fatal relocation of the Lifestream.) Also, while I like Squall and FFVIII, Lightning has the better Gunblades, has a more realistic personality (although they both start out their games a bit cold), is attractive (albeit less so than Fang or Vanille), and isn't horribly scarred by one of the characters/enemies in her game demonstrating a lack of combat skill (Almost dying the instant the game starts isn't a good way to impress people). A lot of fans, in all fandoms, think they have something to prove by hating on the most popular installment in a series. I said that Squall gets a lot of undeserved flack. I haven't played VIII, so that might factor into it. But one would figure that his personality DOES transfer into other games. He's pretty cool in Kingdom Hearts & completely badass in Dissidia. As for the Gunblade, I don't get why people don't like that at all. It's a very creative weapon with a nice, sleek look to it. Sure, it wouldn't work IRL, but neither would most FF weapons, especially swords, which tend to be more ornate than functional. I think Squall's Gunblade is the best one I've ever seen. It doesn't shoot, no, instead it used the vibration caused by the shell "exploding" in the barrel, improving it's dicing power. Is this fight a joke, the best protagonist from the best game ever (FFXIII) VS the worst protagonist from the worst game ever (FFVIII). Seeing that, I must conclude that Lightning is winning because her CGI render is much better, or for the reason why her CGI render is better (latest, PS3 game). @129.15.127.123: Your argument is invalid. Squall only gains command of the Garden mid-to-late game, at the beginning of the game he hadn't even graduated into the SeeD program. Lightning quits before the game starts. Also, if you were to call, say, a soldier fighting in Afghanistan "just a grunt soldier", you would get severe backlash from the internet. Agreed. While I can sort of see the angle from which the comparison is made, I really don't think that Lightning is in any way a counterpart to Cloud. Seems like Lightning's got this in the bag. Either she's that good of a character, or XIII is that good of a game. Mind you, when you got a guy with a chocobo in his hair, the game's good. Pity about Squall, though, he really is a great leading man.
