#Levi is very useful considering water element is not common in most games (is that why they took him out in X?). Phoenix did save me a couple of times in VIII and IX (take that you [[ Necron |big blue bad plot device]]), but Levi has all the good junctions.

Week 140: Leviathan v. Phoenix

Dnc v
Summons. Call this fire versus water, but really its not fire versus water, so maybe we'll go with 'red versus blue.' WINNER!

Votes for the Leviathan

  1. Leviathan is a sea serpant aka dragon and he my second favorite summon. Also water beats fire.  NeoZEROX Dissicon ff6 Ter4 04:03, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  2. Phoenix is marginally more useful, but Leviathan is often a sole source of Water-elemental damage. His artwork over the series is also... amazing, especially here. 8bit 04:05, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  3. As anyone here will tell you, I have a massive obsession with Leviathan. Phoenix a great summon. Don't get me wrong, but the Lord of All Waters edges it for me. He's appeared in more games and he's usually a boss (at least in the older FFs) and he looks incredibly badass in FFVIII. Tsunami for the win! TheBlueDragoon 05:15, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  4. Phoenix is cool, but there's just something about Leviathan that makes him significantly cooler. Moocowisi 05:25, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  5. Leviathan = Pwnage. AtmaCrisis 08:05, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  6. Leviathan is a lot stronger then Phoenix even though Bahamut is still superior, the only purpose of Phoenix is because he can revive dead allies along with damaging an opponent at the same time. The damage that Phoenix does however is insignificant to most summons and if you only have one dead character, arise is a much better choice of spell as it cost only half the MP Phoenix costs. The only time when Phoenix is actually useful is when you either have more then one character dead or you have a dead character and the opponent is weak against fire. Besides another reason that makes Leviathan more useful is that he is USUALLY the only source of strong water attacks that your party has while Phoenix can be easily replaced with a stronger fire summon or Firaga. KaiserPaladin 08:37, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  7. immortal creature versus the master of the oceans? My vote is for the King of the Phantom Beasts (FFIV), without any doubt. •Alfarius• 14:05, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  8. BlueHighwind : "Let those curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up Leviathan." (Job 3:8)
  9. Leviathan may not have been able to heal, but his power has always been excellent (and sometimes better than Bahamut for the MP cost). I like both, and pheonix has saved me more than once, but I have to say overall I prefer to have my big watery summon to wipe out my enemies. Also all the animations have been awesome! Bond em7 14:30, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  10. Water can easily extinguish fire. SquallisbetterthanCloud 14:51, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  11. "Hey look, this boss is weak to Water! OH WAIT. I don't have any water elemental spells." This is where Leviathan's usefulness shines through. Plus, if you don't suck, you won't ever have to use Phoenix. - +DeadlySlashSword+ 14:56, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

  16. Leviathan has my vote, though Phoenix is cool too.--StragusLore 18:54, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  17. Leviathan has been in more games than Phoenix. Plus more unique eidolon (apart from ivalice games no alternate water summon)Balthierfan 21:22, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  18. As mentioned, Leviathan is a godsend during the final battles of FFIII (namely Cloud of Darkness), since Bahamut has so few castings available. For that alone, I shall salute thee, Lord of the Seas.--ClixPsi 21:51, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  19. If this battle were portrayed in-game literally in a Bahamut vs. Alexander fashion, Leviathan would easily douse the flame of Phoenix. Theres really no avoiding that. And sure, Phoenix is more useful in battle. But being thee only Water summon around and a powerful one, it deserves more recognition than it gets. Adelbert

  24. The first summon I ever saw, when I played the FFVIII demo at a friend's house. It's kinda hard to argue with that. Sol_Vent
  25. This was a tough one, but Leviathan has it for me. All of the reasons stated above are excellent, but when it comes right down to it, I'm a water person.CodeNameRedXIII 05:43, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

  29. Juqni 17:07, February 4, 2010 (UTC) I've pretty much never used Phoenix so Leviathan is a pretty obvious choice. Besides he had an awesome summoning sequence in FF8.

  32. Phoenix and the revival are far superior to Leviathan's damage which is often outclassed by Bahamut. But Leviathan is also responsible for making my darling Rydia the beauty she is today, and he's in second, so I choose him. Doreiku Kuroofangu

  1. I like the water element better, so Leviathan FTW.
  2. I actually had to think about this for some time. But...I'll go for Leviathan. I've developed a strange love for him during the last few years...
  3. Water is a more unique element in a Final Fantasy game. 08:41, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  4. Aaaaah, this one hurts!! My two very most beloved Eidolons. They both are quite powerful, but most of all, they both are ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT! But I'll go with Leviathan, because I like Water most...but really, as far as I'm concerned, they're on equal footing.
  5. I think phoenix is more useful but the ff9 version of leviathan is one of the coolest summons in the entire series. Leviathan FTW!!
  6. I loved Leviathan's cutscene in FFVIII and he/she has always been there to beast it up!
  7. Leviathan's cool, and I use him far more often than I use Phoenix. Sometimes I just use him to see the summoning sequence, it's usually pretty cool. 04:08, February 3, 2010 (UTC)
  8. Though Phoenix is a pretty sweet mythological beast, Leviathan takes the cake in element, backstory, amount of games, and damage to MP ratio in general. Phoenix kind of falls feels forced, and I prefer Ifrit as a fire summon. 1:07, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

  7. I've always loved both of these summons. FFIX's summons were my favourites, and since both of these were summonable, I was torn. But I decided on Phoenix, since it's so beautiful, and can be powerful. And rebirth is hot. Dan-Iota 11:21, FEb 2, 2010 (UTC)
  8. When I was young, Leviathan was my favorite summon. However, now, no matter the game (like FFVIII and FFIX), I barely summon it anymore. Pheonix is more useful. In FFVIII, it can revive your whole party. In FFIX, it can be used by Eiko to revive as much as three party members at once (against Ozma, this can be very useful), and it can even save you from a Game Over. 12. I love both summons, but I'm going to have to go with Phoenix, mostly because its feathers can revive you; a Leviathan can't. Hytey 13:27, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

  14. The Rood Inverse Levithan is a dragon-like summon with the reare water dmg, wihc is nice and cool, but how often do you actualy use summons? Allmost never, since they are time consuming, mana expencive and rearly that good, compared to other types of DPS. But Phoenix is one of those, that is stil usefull, since you can revive all your chars, heal and does some dmg as a bonus. FFVII's Final Attack Materia makes it a insurance you can't be without in some battles.

  20. Phoenix is the most versatile summon, hands down. Who cares about an extra, say, 3000 damage compared to Phoenix if you're dead? Intercision 19:19, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  21. Munk451 Pheonix can save you if you are down to your last party member and summon it, because everyone will be revived, while leviathan dosen't. pure and simple
  22. Phoenix is just awesome because it revives your party and hurts the enemy.Legend of Fantasy 20:43, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
  23. Dang, this is a good fight. But Leviathan is never the most powerful summon in the games he appears in, although he does teach some good magic in some games, but Phoenix is often very unique in its ability to revive the whole party and therefore very useful (FFVIII) as well as teaching some very unique and useful magic such as Life 3 (FFVI). I'm going with Phoenix here. -Nokareon
  24. A difficult fight, why do I choose Phoenix? There are several reasons: I owe it for aiding in my defeat of Omega in Final Fantasy VIII, I have fond memories of mispronouncing it's name (as 'Fa En Ix') back as a child, and overall I prefer to be brought back to life than to have an overlarged water gun at my disposal, that's not to say I don't like Leviathan; but I'll shut up now. 29. Leviathan's feathers aren't a recurring item that allows one to circumvent inconvenient deaths. Actually, does Leviathan have feathers? No, because Leviathan's some stupid mega-snake (like this series doesn't have enough already...) Phoenix, however, is a mythical bird. Why not? It's an opinion poll. Hamfruitcake 09 12:28, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
Well, I think a vote is more interesting if it is in the shape of an argument, with clear and logical reasons. But those votes are completely contradictory. Is it fire that beats water, or water that beats fire? Both. It depends. That's why I don't really like seeing that... Of course, deep down, it's a poll, so I vote for Leviathan 'cause I prefer Leviathan are alright too. KujaRhapsodos 01:06, February 3, 2010 (UTC)
How does fire even beat water? I can understand the confusion as to whether or not fire beats ice (fire melts ice, which turns to water, which douses fire), but when it comes to water and fire, water is pretty much guaranteed to be the stronger. Does fire's heat evaporate water or something? StarkMaximum 01:11, February 3, 2010 (UTC)
Put a big enough fire, and no amount of water will extinguish it. The energy the fire releases is so great, even H2O's incredible «capacité thermique» (4,16 kJ/(kg*°C)) doesn't save it from being instantly vaporized (chemistry for the win!). Also, firefighters sometimes have the hardest time putting a fire out, because it's simply too hot: the fire is self-generating. I mean, its own heat kind of feeds itself. Take a bushfire for example. They can last for weeks. That's why I say it depends. Enough of one beats the other. KujaRhapsodos 13:23, February 3, 2010 (UTC)
Fire is self-generating? It's own heat feeds itself? Err... no. To keep burning, it needs fuel. Fire cannot be sustained without fuel. That's why all fires eventually go out. In your bushfire example, the wood from the trees is the fuel, and the winds push it onto more trees, fueling the fire even more. Once there is no wood left, it goes out. Granted, a little heat is required to get the energy out of the fuel, but it is still not self-generating. (Physics for the win!) Jeppo (Talk | contribs) 17:19, February 3, 2010 (UTC)
XD. I just meant the shear energy possessed by the bushfire makes up for anything (water), except, of course, lack of fuel. It's so hot, anything combustible just instantly catches on fire, then feeding the larger fire. I know, the wording was weird.... (It would be so great having an eternal flame, infinite energy for everyone! Dangerous too, but...)KujaRhapsodos 23:41, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

I think it'd be pretty cool if they made a FF where the main characters were the summons themselves. I'd so love to be walking around going "I'm Ifrit yo!" Modedan 12:47, February 2, 2010 (UTC) The closest thing we have to that is IV and VI where we had a few NCPs of the summon species. Exdeath64 16:45, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

These are my two favorite summons, mostly because they aren't the super-powered, super-popular Bahamuts and Odins that exist throughout the series, or the very common Shivas and Ifrits. Although those summons are awesome, Leviathan and Phoenix are uncommon, and require a greater strategy for use (the rarity of water spells or the death of your party members). Frankly, they're a treat when put into a game, and sorely missed when excluded. And you can tell that Square-Enix goes the extra mile to make their animations spectacular whenever they do show up.CodeNameRedXIII 05:56, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

Couldn't have said it better myself. Both of these guys haven't been seen since FFIX. I don't include FFXI, since its an MMO. On a side note, there's so many better pictures of Phoenix. Like his Crisis Core artwork. TheBlueDragoon 06:46, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

Ah, true. But, don't forget about the "Margin of 10%" rule. If a fight in the DNC does not win by greater than a margin of 10%, then the fight is declared as a tie. As of this comment (and based on your count), Leviathan has about 48% of the total votes, meaning he might squeeze out a default tie.CodeNameRedXIII 02:49, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

Week 139: Luso Clemens v. Ashley Riot

Dnc v
Ashley Riot
33 1/2 vs. 27
Oh no he didn't...

...oh yes he did! Its important to remember amidst all the belly-aching about stuff that doesn't matter, that variety is the spice of life and the unfortunate reality of the nomination page is that no one really knows how to follow instructions--in the spirit of the DNC, those people don't count--and that the vast majority of people who vote there seem to have a huge man-crush on Squall.

So who are these guys? Ashley Riot, one of the first protagonists on Ivalice, and perhaps the most forgotten since in spite of Square's note that this was all set on a Final Fantasy world, the title of his Vagrant Story is not bearing the appropriate number of F's. Then there's Luso, who's kind of the latest addition to the various heroes who have guided a rather diverse and almost nonsensical chain of events where sometimes there are lizard men and bunny girls and sometimes not. Nevertheless, which would you place your gil on, Game Hunter or Risk Breaker?

Votes for the Game Hunter

  1. I've never played either of these games, but I know for a fact that I like Luso better. His name is better (Ashley? 11. The three Final Fantasy Tactics games are my favourite Ivalice games. Therefore, Luso wins. Legend of Fantasy 23:21, January 23, 2010 (UTC)
  12. Yay for Luso! Kuzlalala 01:16, January 24, 2010 (UTC)
  13. sure, why not? AtmaCrisis 06:21, January 24, 2010 (UTC)
  14. At least Game Hunter is a title that makes sense- how exactly does one break a risk? Oh, and FFTA2 didn't need Shakespeare references. And Luso doesn't look like a bad combination ripoff of the worst aspects of Liquid Snake and Raiden. The.DreadnoughT 21:21, January 24, 2010 (UTC)
  15. Although I'm not a complete fan of his fairly shallow character, the game itself was my favorite Tactics/DS Final Fantasy Game (again, not for its plot, which was shallow, but actually for its gameplay and such). I can't really make a judgement on Vagrant Story- yet. Nokareon
  16. Even though I don't like him, Ashley doesn't even belong here, so, my vote goes to stupid. MadHatter1284 02:52, January 25, 2010 (UTC)
  17. He kicks some serious ass, and actually has a snowballs chance of getting some. And he is not as emo as some other characters who shall remain nameless. Exdeath64 04:17, January 25, 2010 (UTC)
  18. Tactics A2 all the way. Luso is a lot more tolerable than Ashley. BoAKaNRikkusmallsig 05:29, January 25, 2010 (UTC)
  19. How could I not vote for Square's tribute for Portugal? -• Kyrel [Talk]
  20. Because he fed a trio of Behemoths a length of iron. An epic fail, but a good epic fail. Pikmin Master 02:08, January 26, 2010 (UTC)
  21. Vagrant Story, a fair game, but it lacked anything that made Ivalice Ivalice. Tactics A2, despite the weird name, truly made Ivalice a good game setting, with plenty of fights, magical creatures, and a weird kid with a book leading a guild. The Game Hunter's has a story, has style, and has an attitude that makes you love 'im, the trouble maker.Noobking87
  22. Luso vs. Ashely? GTFO Luso auto-wins hands down, and why? Because A2 was such a joy to play ^___^, seeing sum guy playthru Vagrant Story on YouTube with its eyepaining graphics and foolish combo system loses dearly to what A2 has; pure-tactial action just short of the original FFT ~___~ people come up with better duels for this colosseum please T^T --Exhorresco 11:01, January 26, 2010 (UTC)
  23. I'm voting for Luso just cause I can. Acrum92 19:42, January 27, 2010 (UTC)

  25. LUSO !! of coures gotta be the GAME HUNTER cuz he gonna play video games all summer..and that is awsome, I should play Vagrant Story though BLK.MAGE.MOG 10:32, January 30, 2010 (UTC)

  1. I had never heard of any of them before but, from what I read in their pages, Ashley's character is too cliché. =/ 21:41, January 23, 2010 (UTC)

  3. As of yet, I haven't played Vagrant Story. But do you know how desperate I am? PUT VAGRANT STORT ON NORTH AMERICAN PSN, DANG IT! Cross this out when it happens. 月光 02:36, January 23, 2010 (UTC)

  13. I really hated everything about FFTA (it ruined the original FFT), and this guy sounds badass. Bruntie2 16:48, January 24, 2010 (UTC)
  14. Aww... poor Ashley. Though I don't really prefer one character over the other, it looks as though Ashley might not win (though it's too early to tell). I'll vote for him because, let's face it, the original PS is pretty old-school, and I love old-school things (for the most part).CodeNameRedXIII 22:21, January 24, 2010 (UTC)
  15. Ashley. Anyone knows that he's like Leon Kennedy in Final Fantasy. The man also needs no classes to keep him limited. He can use magic and be a berserker at the same time.Mask no Oni 22:58, January 24, 2010 (UTC)
  16. Vagrant Story is one of the best videogames I have ever played, with an excellent plot and setting that didn't talk down to its audience. I really cannot say the same for the Tactics Advance series. My vote goes to the wanderer, the vagrant.Hyacynth 16:23, January 26, 2010 (UTC)
  17. Rinoa leonheart 17:36, January 26, 2010 (UTC) O yeah he'll win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:P
  18. Never played any of the Tactics series, but have played VG (and annoyed they've completely forgotten about it!) and enjoyed it. He can do lots of stuff that it takes specialists to do in many FF games, the battle system has had quite an influence on FF XII at least, and I'd imagine XIII (not played it yet, suprisingly enough), so he is, in effect, the daddy of Ivalice. He also has, imo, one of the best retorts ever; 'Reinforcements? I AM the reinforcements.' TomServo101 15:17, January 25, 2010 (UTC)
  19. I just really hate Luso. JohnnyC 17:34, January 25, 2010 (UTC)
  20. Even though I don't like the fact that his name is Ashley, I like him better, he seems cooler, I haven't played either FFTA2 or VS, so... yeah I'm going for Riot (surname much cooler) Cecil the Paladin
  21. Going with unknown(the more) here. Voting for a draw since it looks like less people know Ashley (never played any of these games, by the way). Revyielle 18:31, January 26, 2010 (UTC +8)
  22. Ashley versus Luso? Puh-leese...SquallisbetterthanCloud 20:51, January 26, 2010 (UTC)
  23. The Rood Inverse Ashley comes from a game where the story is everything, and every character has a background and depth. Luso comes from a childrens game (witch is ok) and lack both a good background and depth. Lusio is just one in a line of one-dimentional characters I couldn't give a rats ass about.
  24. Because Hes Cooler Than A Little Boy. Simple, Thats It. C-Man93 21:52, January 27, 2010 (UTC)
  25. # I don't know who is Luso. Ashley is a great character and Vagrant Story is one of the best games I have played. I don't mind his name, he's a GREAT character and he's so hot :D Karu
  26. Like him more - Ash Crimson - 03:07, January 29, 2010 (UTC)

  28. Well, he is the reinforcements. I don't see Luso with better lines. (also, like the character more, that sorta thing)--Otherarrow 09:30, January 29, 2010 (UTC)
  29. Ivalice has a one man army. His name is Ashley Riot. Also, Vagrant Story was the third game to get a 40/40 on Famitsu and the First Square game to do so.Theentertainer
  30. Coz Luso is a dumb schoolkid, I don't know anything about Ashley (why are so many girls called Ashley? Its a blokes name...), but he seems way harder than Luso. --Ammyissun 21:11, January 30, 2010 (UTC)
  31. First of all, Luso can be very VERY annoying at times. Ashley's not the most interesting character, but he is at least pretty cool. Vagrant Story is underrated.Aquamarine39 05:35, January 31, 2010 (UTC)
  32. "Reinforcements? I am the reinforcements". This man doesn't need any other comments. •Alfarius• 19:07, February 1, 2010 (UTC)

  1. I did play this game, and Ashley actually is a pretty awesome character. 01:29, January 24, 2010 (UTC)

Ashley because Luso is quite a weakling specially in one of the cutscenes of ff: war of the lions, he was pursued by a army of behemoths.
