Week 176: The Emperor v. Galenth Dysley

Dnc v
You are Nick Machiavelli. You wrote a book about some royal son. A lot of people thought you were a real jerk for it, but two notable leaders both read it: The Emperor and Galenth Dysley. Their empires are about to clash. Their forces, while different, offer them no true advantage of the other. In military might and economic strength they are equals, but they are ruled by two very different men. Who embodies the cunning, the wisdom, and the necessary duplicity to win? WINNER!

Votes for The Emperor

  1. Cool, my fight got in! Anyway, I'm voting for the Emperor because it took several cities worth of resistance to finally take him and his army down. And when you think he is finally gone... BOOM he comes back and is stronger than ever! He also destroyed several cities and killed multiple playable characters. (even if it was indirectly). Finally, it took the Ultimate magic and the protagonists journey to "heck" to take him down for good. Dysley may have been fought multiple times, but he died before the last boss. The Emperor IS the last boss of FF2. Dysley may have indirectly killed many people though the Purge, but no cities were destroyed. His actions ALMOST destroyed Cocoon, but were ultimately unsuccessful. Also it took the combined might of many to form the resistance that took down the Emperor, but Dysley was stopped by six Pulse L'cie. I think Dysley is a powerful antagonist, but the Emperor beats him here. Also, I feel like Emperor Mateus is going to need the votes. --Time Master 01:01, July 6, 2011 (UTC)
  2. He goes to hell, beats up Satan, and becomes the emperor of Hell in an instant. Soon enough, he raises Pandaemonium onto the surface, and this is like, all, in the last three-four hours of gameplay. Before this party gets started he's busy taking out the rest of the world, laying three kingdoms and three small villages to waste in his wake. He ordered the construction of an airship which eliminated large amounts of the population in four towns, and devised cunning plans, such as poisoning the water for the Wyverns. He's a bit gruesome and cruel, but it's clear that this is what leads him to victory against anything that isn't a playable character. --InsanityBringer 02:08, July 6, 2011 (UTC)

  11. Ok, I will be honest: I've not played the 13th game yet, and I don't know the old guy at all, and his look doesn't impress me so much, but I DO know the Emperor, and he is one of my favourite characters! Really! I mean, look at him! His design: That gold armor with an extreme purple robe! Classic High heels, (This was a basic wear for men in the XVII-XVIII Century!), and that hair, well, I know that was a inspired by David Bowie, but Amano redesigned it so much better, with those cool horns (What is probably a part of a his headgear or crown!), and his personality, his cold cruelity dressed in fine elegance, Everything is so well designed on him! In Dissidia he is also one of my favourites, and even in the main game, he rocked. His story was great! One thing I've never really understood about him, is that he was looking for world domination. If he could have been the ruler, he was satisfied, then why did not the rebel army surrender to him, and the story could have ended much faster, without so much good guy's death! (Ummm, maybe I'm not completely right about the story, but did he want to create a demonic world for only himself? Ok... If someone knows, just tell me!:-D). Ok... i wrote enough words already...One more thing: I know that it's not fair to give vote for someone, just because you don't know the other, but I'm sure, that THE EMPEROR, THE MAIN VILLAIN OF FINAL FANTASY II is much more powerful, than an old gramps' dressed into the outfit of a dransgender pope... so this fight will end with the EMPERORS ABSOLUTE DOMINION! Every hail the EMPEROR! --Lonely Wild Rose Rose 17:23, July 6, 2011 (UTC)

  18. The Emp. has like no characterization in FFII but as far as villainous feats go, he's hard to top. He's on the verge of total domination all through the game from the get-go and when he bites the big one he comes back better than ever, after taking over other planes of existence. Also gotta love the crazy, abstract and majestic Amano art. His faces may be weird but the art itself is always interesting. AnonyMan 22:03, July 6, 2011 (UTC)

  1. Ok. I like FFXIII and I enjoy Galenth Dysley but he's up against the Emperor. The ruler of Palamecia. The guy who almost single-handedly crushed the Fynn resistance if it weren't for Firion and his buddies. And then, what happens when Firion kills him? He comes back from fucking Hell. One of the coolest FF antagonists of all time (topped only by Kefka and Kuja).
  2. Meh, the whole "mocking religious officials" thing got old after FFX. # 16:41, July 6, 2011 (UTC)

  5. Superpope is a terrible character, his whole plot is to destroy the world, including him, so the maker will come along again, remake and then leave again, completely pointless, im not a huge emperor fan although he is a good character, but i hated XIII and this guy is one of the main reasons. Jihl Nabaat seemed awesome in the trailers, they should have used her voice and design as a more serious antagonist, not superpope, since he is a pope Hope is the only character to have any real reason to fear him....-- 09:27, July 7, 2011 (UTC)

  7. The other guy is called the "Superpope". "Super" says how great he thinks he is, and "pope" reminds of some old guy in real life. I automatically dislike that sad excuse for an antagonist.
  8. Emperor, for sure. Everythinf in FFXIII sucks, the antagonist included, and Emperor was, like, the first FF villain with true personality. Also, in Dissidia, he really takes the spotlight, so my vote goes to him.
  9. Emperor, because he actually succeeded in his plans. Plus, he's like the David Bowie of Dissidia.

  21. While I tended to like playing II more than XIII (though neither are my favorites), I must say that in terms of villainy, Dysley is far greater. The man has the tactical prowess of ages. His lies and control over any situation at a given time is enviable of any leader quite frankly. In terms of Mr. Machiavelli's book (great read, I recommend to any megalomaniac), Dysley pulls off the nicer side of a ruler like no other, while also maintaining his his crueler side through pure manipulation. The Emperor simply could not do this. He held all the charisma of a wet fish in comparison as all he used was raw power to take control. Furthermore he used fear, something that will only result in revolt, as we clearly saw Leon attempt to take power immediately afterward. With Dysley this is not the case; his subjects love him as their beloved Super Papa. They wouldn't die for him out of fear, but out of devotion. And what does he plan to do with said devotion? Use it to cause their eventual destruction. It takes far more gaul to treat those below you with love, protection, and what passes as kindness, only to throw it all away the minute they least expect it. Dysley is a man that will call a child over to help it, set it up with a grand future, and help it along, and then stab it in the back (literally) with a false hug somewhere down the line. To gain such standing in any society and not be seen at all for what a wolf in sheep's clothing he is. What's more, he's managed to get away with it for well over 500 years. He's likely taken the guise of many people throughout his long life, growing to become loved for protecting his people time and time again. This is true, effective villainy AND Machiavellian principles of how one may gain power and hold it. Such a man should not be ignored, better yet kept an eye on... -User:Durmer Darc 22:33, July 20, 2011 (UTC)

1. He is awesome 2. he has an epic battle theme 3. He deceived everyone! he so good at that sort of thing he probably is controlling the DNC right now. 4. The emporer is a direct takeoff from Star Wars, and that's just lazy!

5. Quick fact at the beginning of the game dysley already controls cocoon whereas emperor mateus is still on his quest to control it 6. I have played all the final fantasy games and i think all of them are fantastic, so i can't give my vote to any of them only becouse i prefer one of the games or any of the character. So i'm going to be realistic. First of all it must be mentioned that Cocoon is much more advanced technologycaly than Palamecia and the Emperors soldiers have nothing to do against PSICOM. And about a fight between them it's the same. The Emperor can be evolved into a kind of demon or something like that, but on the battles of the main characters of each game and them, Lightning and her group have more difficulties to defeat Dysley than Firion and his group had to defeat the Emperor, and i must not say that Lightning is much powerful than any other main character of the series becouse she and the members of her group can spell 6 magics or habilities on the same move and others only 2 or 3 by using the doubble or tripple habilities. What i want to say is that any other Final Fantasy Hero like Cloud, Squall, Tidus or even Firion could not defeat him. Finally i want to apologize if my english isn't so good becouse i'm spanish and i'm learning english yet.

I think FFVII would not be seen as nearly as impressive a game(aside from a tech standpoint) in the gaming community if the other all of the older FFII and the other older FFs had been released outside of Japan before it. II was like the 1st really dark game of the series and killed off way more playable characters(and all of the temp characters were FAR cooler than the permanent ones). Not taking a jab at VII(this time), I'm just saying.AnonyMan 22:27, July 6, 2011 (UTC)

As much as I agree with the person above me there's really no point in going over the whatifs and such. It is what it is, and even if the older games had been released before FFVII what does any of that have to do with this? --Marael 23:39, July 6, 2011 (UTC)

I disagree with the comments above claiming that always slagging off VII just beacuase its success, in muy Opinion VI was not that great and Kefka (he was alright as he had some humourous lines, and personality)is WAY overrated. yes he's a little amuzing but seriously....Kuja had way more stylish flare and Sephiroth was just Kickass. i know people are going to say some BS like Kefka was the God of magic and conquered the world, but hey so did Ultimecia and there is no end of abuse she gets from suppossed fans who are more obsessed with unfairly critizing later games when the gameplay is usually just as good if not better than previous games (XIII not so much IMO lol, the characters still has tere charm though and the 12 days before the purge thing was good to watch).i'm not saying the games pre VII aren't good it's just annoying the way supposed fans are clearly biased with there hatered (they still seem to play the new games though...

Final Fantasy VII became popular because of its improved graphics and its improved marketing - and it was a good game, I won't deny it. However, Sephiroth, Kuja, Ultimecia, and - adding some relevance to the fight here - Emperor Mateus all started off with major power. So did many others. The one villain who didn't start with great power was Kefka; he started out as a manipulative lackey, and grew. He acquired ultimate power right out from under Gestahl's nose (another emperor), then killed him (and a general). What makes him different from Ultimecia in the aspect of taking over the world is that he does it all, right in front of your face; Ultimecia's Time Compression (and home time, where she has conquered everything) is thwarted through a time loop she herself starts (while the conquest is done off-screen; it really loses its edge). I agree; Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy VIII get a lot of flak for and because of their systems, and that makes their villains unpopular. The bottom line is that they are all unique; they all contribute their own brand of evil. The Emperor provides a man hellbent on controlling everything he can, from the planet to the afterlife - he's intelligent and cruel. He's also the actual big-bad of the game, whereas Galenth Dylensy... well, to my knowledge, he isn't. I know the Emperor better; thus, I voted for him.

What's with the really long votes? SquallRocks 14:56, July 7, 2011 (UTC)

Really that's about all the credit I've seen go to Mateus is because of that damn game. As stated above I've known Mateus before Dysley and yes, he is better, but I tend to stray away from the cesspool of flies that swarm around the recently popular characters. They're like new hit singles that are from a band which has been around for the past 20 years. Understand? Also to those who say 'FFXIII sux' You can cry on my shoulder and admit it was too hard for you. --Gunji 10:02, July 16, 2011 (UTC)
I'm not sure you're serious, friend. You do know Final Fantasy II has been re released and on various consoles, right? Did you read only 1 comment at random? like Most of the comments of Mateus' votes don't even mention Dissidia(or mention it in addition to other stuff), especially considering he's far less badass than his original version. And don't hate Dissidia for having lesser known characters and games gain more notoriety. I do hope Bartz get his much needed and deserved mass popularity...or people stop hating Vaan for no reason.AnonyMan 15:45, July 16, 2011 (UTC)
Um, yeah. That's all the more reason people should know him more than just for what he's worth in Dissidia. Okay, okay, he looks like David Bowie and that makes him even cooler, right? Don't get me wrong I love Bowie. I don't hate Vaan and Bartz is .. All right. My complaint is that I can't stand this type of notoriety, I've seen it throughout every match and for the assumption that I only skimmed one comment, I read most of what I could stomach. --Gunji 03:45, July 18, 2011 (UTC)

The Emperor is the first largely developed antagonist. Garland was simple, a guy who made a time loop to live eternally. The Emperor is calculating, ruthless and a "Trap Master", for the whole of FF2 you get to see one or two disasters his actions have brought, always bringing a mess for you to solve. You get Mythril, The Emperor brings the Dreadnought, you destroy the Dreadnought, he brings on a Lamia Queen and poisons the Wyverns. You save Fynn, he lets loose a Cyclone, you defeat him, he comes back from Hell. The Emperor is the first of the line of later on "Emperors" or evil leaders of later games from which ironically Dysley is like an "offspring" of such process? And even if in Dissidia he's just a soldier, he makes himself known. Dysley's role as a Fal'Cie was surprising, but I'd have developed it further, besides his goal was to destroy the world......that objective has been so discarded and simple since quite long (yes Kuja wanted it, but merely after he knew he was mortal) that bringing it back so suddenly when you're developing more complex stories can make this guy look dumb.

Week 175: Tifa Lockheart v. Setzer Gabbiani

  1. I only know Tifa
  2. I liked Setzer's backstory with Daryl, but I wished he had gotten more development. He was interesting. Tifa will always be one of my favorites, behind Fang and Yuna. I have to go with her.
  3. I only know Tifa as well, but using the argument of her becoming a fan-service model, and ignoring what she was before, Setzer was reduced to nothing in KH2. Aside from that, Tifa was extremely kick-ass (figuratively and literally) in her game, and I appreciate her as a female character, where she had depth, was tough, and wasn't obnoxious as the others could be. 16:04, June 15, 2011 (UTC)

  6. I like Setzer, and probably prefer VI but I found him disappointing, he was just there really, you acquire him by interupting a kidnapping event and steal his ship and then trick him, and he just goes along with it enthusiastically. He does make up for this, but damn KH2 killed him. Tifa all the way, shes a great character, her popularity is merited

  8. 21:02, June 18, 2011 (UTC)Even as a Boxy low polygon model Tifa was still hot. I never saw a good picture of ANY of the girls from 6 apart from their amano artwork. And Tifa kept Her personality in KH2.
  9. I doubt Setzer could defeat Tifa in a one-on-one. He's a great character and fun to use but he just isn't all that reliable.
  10. Great punch.

  12. Setzer really doesn't poke my interest. Never used him in my party unless necessary, along with dumass Locke. Tifa, on the other hand, always made my party with Cloud and Vincent/Red XIII. And NOT because of her aesthetics, it's just because I like her.
  13. Setzer is an alright guy but this can't even be considered a contest. Tifa is a strong willed martial artist whose fame in FF series has her gain more popularity than Setzer could ever amass. While I disagree with this perpective despite being a male her hotness has a great deal to do with her popularity. And in regards to the subtle FF6 vs FF7 that underlays this conflict, technically it should be a draw but it isn't (FF7)! Tifa is also kinda hilarious. (FF7 stair climbing scene, Epic Funny my fair lady) Tifa got into Duodecim, was considered for the original Kingdom Hearts BEFORE Setzer and in any top 10 countdown concerning FF characters, Tifa somehow makes the top 5(She even managed to beat out Cloud and Sephiroth in one countdown in IGN I think...). Plus there are two obvious reasons that Tifa will win this. Personality and Punching.

  16. What's with people keep saying Tifa's reputation getting ruined? It's not like it is favored by the masses and is her real personality. What can you do? She just looks that way. Its pretty foolish to judge someone based on the bad rumors that obviously does only apply for the pervs. This battle, my vote goes to Tifa.
  17. Tifa wins for me. But if it was against Lightning I would choose lightning
  18. Both are highly nostalgic, and Setzer is a great and useful character, but something about Tifa makes me want to cheer her on. She's persistent and strong-willed without being pushy, but she isn't afraid to show vlnerability.

  9. Well, this fight is a bit unbalanced... Yeah, Tifa has skills with gambling, but she is a fighter after all... Setzer is a born gambler. He uses dices, slots and cards to fight. In duodecim, Tifa is one of my favourite characters, I love her, and her look, but this fight is the gamblers fight. If it was a brawlers fight, I'm sure my vote would fly to Tifa, but this time, Setzer is the ace. He throws dices like noone does! 11. His Slots were actually unique. In addition to being a far, far, far cooler and more interesting character. He's got style, something Tifa doesn't, and the only airship in VI's world...then the OTHER only airship later. A pimp, plain and simple. Tifa's not even a good "tough girl" RPG character, much better examples who came before her. AnonyMan 21:00, June 16, 2011 (UTC)
  12. Setzer gets my vote because he has a unique way of fighting, i.e with darts/cards in addition to his slots. Also, he has an interesting backstory and owns the world's only airship. 18. No contest for me. It's Setzer. He is The Wandering Gambler - Tifa isn't a gambler, she is a monk. If we're going on slots, Setzer wins with 7 Flush; if we're going on weapons, Setzer wins with Fixed Dice or Doom Darts or Final Trump. Setzer is a unique character with a few mysteries and his world's only airship. Tifa has... well, we know what she has. And it doesn't work for me. Setzer is the winner! 1. Tifa has neither Dice nor Darts as weapons, so... my vote goes to Setzer.
  2. 21:22, June 17, 2011 (UTC)I don't really understand the nature of this competition; slots are the only qualification for being a gambler? I don't see Tifa "gambling" so much as "focusing" on her limit break...there's certainly none of the "casino" aspect. Cait Sith or Selphie should have gone up against Setzer. To me, Tifa is easily the better character, but that's not what we're deciding here, is it?
  3. The best romantic (in the true sense of word) character ever. He feint coolness and such, but he's such a sad and nostalgic guy inside, not really belonging to the times he lives in. Plus, his music theme (with a lot of variations) is the main ending theme. Nothing else to add really.
  4. Setzer has a damn casino in his airship and he makes quotes about life. Also, Setzer has Fixed Dice. Tifa is just all fanboys fapping to her.
  5. I choose Tifa at the first sight. But don't you forget this quote: 'Whenever you think you're right, you're wrong'. So my vote goes for Setzer.
  6. Tifa? A Gambler? Don't make me laugh. Setzer invented the Gambler job class, and Tifa can do Slot Machines? As a Limit Break? Setzer can do them anytime like a man. -- 19:34, July 5, 2011 (UTC)

Peanut Gallery

I Can't Decide! They're both to epic for words.

I can't choose. Tifa suplexes and beats up everything that she meets up against and is just awesome, and Setzer calls Chocobos, brings down the Airship with H-Bomb, and he's also awesome!

FF needs more Real Slots-using characters. There hasn't been any since Cait Sith. Also Selphie would have been a more fitting choice to go up against Setzer. AnonyMan 21:09, June 16, 2011 (UTC)

There was at least one more after Cait Sith that I know of. And that is Wakka, who used the slots.

Razordash 09:36, June 17, 2011 (UTC)

  1. 21:27, June 17, 2011 (UTC) Not a big fan of this match-up; Tifa's slots are not so much a question of luck, but patience; they move slowly enough for you to guarantee a hit if you are willing to take the time to do it right. It's more like she is focusing her strength rather than relying on luck. Cait Sith and Selphie actually rely on luck in order to get a result from their slots, and would have been a much more appropriate choice for this match-up.

Selphie's Slots weren't really so much down to luck though, it was more about patience as you could just keep redoing them until you got some awesome magic, or if you were really patient, come up with rapture.-->

There is a cheat that can garantee getting the results you want with Selphies limit break (if you have a Playstation 1)

Zack got the DMW-slots in Crisis core. Never been a fan of the random limit breaks... The Rood Inverse 11:44, June 27, 2011 (UTC)

I have to agree with the person above me. It ticks me off that I can't choose when to use the strongest summons in a boss battle but they keep popping up in a normal enemy encounter, like seriously? WTF?! At least with Tifa you get to choose. --Marael 02:11, July 2, 2011 (UTC)

  36. Kain is a beast in battle, simple as that. And, in the Advance/Complete Collection, Kain's dark side easily captured Rosa and Cecil in Kain's lunar trial. You can choose to have Kain fight Cecil, and if you watch that scene it's obvious how powerful Kain's true spirit is. And, when Kain double jumps, you can do massive amounts of damage in a short time. Zexion4I4 00:51, June 13, 2011 (UTC)

  6. 22:12, May 27, 2011 (UTC) Dragoons are better than paladins any day, plus, when Cecil changed from a kick ass dark knight, to a piss weak Paladin, everyone who played that game for the first time (including me) was disappointed.

  8. Cecil's more interesting, is around more and has actually proven himself to be pretty awesome. Kain's not a bad character but is just an unremarkable Dragoon and literally nothing special. He's fairly cool, but he was never THAT cool. Ever.AnonyMan 12:07, May 26, 2011 (UTC)

  12. Grr... I can't decide on their epicness, so I'm gonna go with the one I like to play more on Duodecim. I'm not much of an Air Character player, outside of Kuja (that whole gliding thing, ya know.) King of Noobs 21:22, May 26, 2011 (UTC)

  17. Yeah tough choice, and the thing is pretty even too so... whatever. I like Kain too, but he just killed off everyone in Duodecim and made the storyline shorter. I like cecil because he can transform between 2 jobs and the combo skills are pretty epic. HighSeraph 08:07, May 27, 2011 (UTC)

  23. I'm surprised I continued to main him in 012 - his play style really appeals to me. Plus he has a rockin' second alt. The main issue I have with him though is his rather, uhm, hammy performance. But why? WHHHHHHYYYYYY?! *sobs* BfD t/c 01:07, May 31, 2011 (UTC)
  24. I love both characters, FFIV is one of my favourite FF Games. But Cecil is the superior warrior here and we all know that, besides he is Kain's King! KaiserPaladin 07:50, May 31, 2011 (UTC)

  28. I'm voting for Cecil on this one. Kain "betrayed" the party too many times for me to support him. Plus, his character didn't seem to have nearly as much depth as Cecil's. Finally, There are many Dragoons in the final fantasy series, but there is only ONE person who is both a Dark Knight and a Paladin. Kain can't top that. --Time Master 03:35, June 10, 2011 (UTC)

  1. Cecil all the way! He's one of my favourite FF characters...that, and I never really liked Kain much..-- 11:48, May 26, 2011 (UTC)
  2. Tough choice, as they are both great characters, but I've always taken more kindly to Cecil than to Kain. Cecil's story was just more sympathetic and you saw him grow as a character. That's not to say Kain didn't either and that if he was the protaganist of IV I'd be saying the same thing about him that I'm now saying about Cecil, but I just feel that Cecil is the stronger character, and I don't mean in terms of strength. Cecil has misgivings, he has regrets, he has to do things that he doesn't want to do, but he takes all that pain and suffering and carries on anyway, while with Kain it enables him to be mind controlled. Yes, he eventually threw it off, but to have never fallen down that path even with all his suffering, Cecil just takes the cake for me. 19:22, May 26, 2011 (UTC)
  3. 00:02, May 27, 2011 (UTC) As much as I would love to say Kain, Cecil's voice in the DS version was beautiful, and Kain fell behind on the list of awesome characters when Edge, Rydia, Edward, and Yang came into the picture. Love them both, but Cecil leads just by a hair.

1. Calling it now. It's gonna be a draw.

Possibly. These are two of the few characters around here who are really popular with very few ire around them. Even Vivi has haters(Haters gonna hate in this case). But I'm thinking Kain will edge out for the win. AnonyMan 12:00, May 26, 2011 (UTC)
  1. I can't vote on this one because I can't tell who is more badass - in the DS version, my Cecil fought Odin (taking no fewer than three Zantetsuken hits) practically solo and won; in the same game, Kain took out Zeromus with his last attack and at 1 HP.
That was deep, whoever it was that posted above me. --Gunji 14:08, May 26, 2011 (UTC)

Just to clarify things just in case some people incorrectly state, Kain wasn't The First Dragoon, Ricard(or Richard) from FF2(the real FF2) was. AnonyMan 18:44, May 26, 2011 (UTC)

Perhaps but Kain was the first 'Standard' dragoon or debatably the dragoon that others are based on - spears, jump, dragon helm, etc. Balthierfan 11:10, May 27, 2011 (UTC)
Not quite, Dragoons were in FF3 and that's when they finally got Jump to cement their style and motif. Kain may have made the class more popular but he didn't bring anything else to it. AnonyMan 12:06, May 27, 2011 (UTC)
And let's not forget that Final Fantasy IV was Final Fantasy II for us Americans, so he is OUR first Dragoon. King of Noobs 17:45, May 27, 2011 (UTC)
Actually FFII is the original FF in America, so still Ricard.
Er, no. I, IV and VI were the first three released in America. II wasn't released for quite a while. -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 06:07, May 29, 2011 (UTC)
That's true. however, we have the internet and this is a Final Fantasy information site. Anyone can easily look up Dragoons and know Kain still wasn't the original. AnonyMan 21:24, May 31, 2011 (UTC)
When you grew up playing Final Fantasy, did you have much access to the Internet? Did this site even exist when the SNES was in its prime? The simple fact, no matter what information may be out there, nostalgia over-rules almost everything. That's why many will still call Kain the first Dragoon. King of Noobs 21:33, May 31, 2011 (UTC)

Hahah I always laugh at the anonymous voters bc they have the LONGEST explanations. SquallRocks 20:57, May 31, 2011 (UTC)
