Week 250: BAD FIGHT WEEK! Four quality* fights![]

DSS's Fight: Cloud Strife v. Ultimecia[]

Cloud - 012 CG
DNC Versus
Ultimecia
VICTOR
CLOUD
22 to 18½
DSS's comment: I've seen more than a few fans claim that Squall and Sephiroth would have matched up better as far as hero vs. villain go, as both are dark and brooding and have a penchant for leather and emotional problems. But this fight isn't about them, this fight is about who would be left over when the two bad boys realize they're a much better match for one another. So who will emerge victorious in this battle of irrelevancy? VICTOR

  1. 96.241.126.154 20:32, May 31, 2013 (UTC) Cloud has a clear goal in mind. Ultimecia hardly has a backstory. I think she's Ellone, but there's no real idea of why she's doing the whole Time Compression thing. And you see her once. Cloud, you see him all the time, he has a reason to fight... And his sword is awesome.

Scathe's comment: Most battles are about who is stronger. This is not one of those battles. 9. Terra's scene is less about her hair and more about the moment. Kefka has been vanquished, she saved her friends followed by them saving her, she survived the fall of magic, she learned what it means to love, and she finally allows herself to enjoy life. Epitomizing all of that by feeling the wind blow through her hair is a powerful yet subtle point. In comparison, loss of innocence haircut is both weaker and more hyped. 10. Garnet's hair without her face terrifies me. I even photoshopped that and it terrifies me. ScatheMote 18:02, May 27, 2013 (UTC)
  11. I don't get why Garnet needed to cut her hair in order to symbolize her loss of innocence and acceptance of it. 14. Epic moment! The last words before the cut: "Zidane...Remember the way I was...for me." In those times of great despair for Garnet, when she starts talking about herself in the past tense, I felt like something tragic was going to happen, and it seems that Zidane thought so too, as his action of running after her shows it. In a few seconds (due to the haircut), all that atmosphere vanishes and another takes place, the feeling of freedom, as the princess become a queen, someone capable of controlling her own actions and life. Besides, what Xepscern said above. JC Holy Knight (talk) 01:55, May 28, 2013 (UTC)

That, and this kind of "fight" is not silly at all. It's a comparison of plot/character development, and not just merely between two characters, as is always done here. (If not, then a fight between characters' hairstyles is certainly different enough to pique your interest, don't you think? :) ) MissH <3 16:31, May 27, 2013 (UTC)

Wait, Cloud versus Ultimecia isn't a hair fight too? SlamShuffle16:45, May 27, 2013 (UTC)
I'm not entirely sure. It's just that both Terra's and Garnet's hair moments had some significance to their plot/character in their respective games, while Cloud's an Ultimecia's fight has minimal, if not no, common ground whatsoever. But which one between chocobo hair and horns in hair the people prefer? I can't see why not. *cough*Horns are in*cough* :) MissH <3 18:52, May 27, 2013 (UTC)

What petition? Project Crystallis? C A T U S E 17:37, May 19, 2013 (UTC)

Operation Suzaku, actually.  < Kamikaze Pardee > 17:42, May 19, 2013 (UTC)
Mm. I'm not a big fan of Operation Suzaku because, while their end goal is indeed great, their means are ... eh. For example, "As a first “physical contact” with Square Enix, Operation Suzaku will send them 10,000 pennies as soon as the petition reach 10,000 signatures. This way, they won’t be able to ignore the operation and will know that a high demand exists." - that won't show anything (10,000 isn't enough for a huge game like Type-0 to profit off of, iirc) and will just make the secretary who opens that box have a very bad day. C A T U S E 17:48, May 19, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah I found that part a little odd. I think that whole penny thing was done a little while ago actually, but there are a few other things they do to let Square know about the want for Type-0 outside of Japan. But it doesn't hurt to just sign the petition, which literally takes only a minute or two.  < Kamikaze Pardee > 17:53, May 19, 2013 (UTC)
Is there a link for this petition? and is there a way to get them to make the content of other games the same everywhere, and not just for certain regions? --Pzykosiz (talk) 23:56, May 19, 2013 (UTC)
Square-Enix will just laugh at the petition and use the pennies to make XIII-4. Hundred-dollar budget? Why not. Emperor-PSPFieldMATEUS 00:20, May 20, 2013 (UTC)
Here's the link to the petition itself and here is a link to the Operation Suzaku site.  < Kamikaze Pardee > 00:32, May 20, 2013 (UTC)

Out of curiousity, how do the folks voting for Ace know him? Did they play the Japanese version of the game, read the novels, or just read about him on the wiki?SlamShuffle 19:27, May 22, 2013 (UTC)

It's obvious they did one or all of those things. It's just like any other time people vote for a character they stated they don't know about. Don't forget not every vote for someone is a vote FOR them as it is a spite vote against the other.--AnonyMan (talk) 22:24, May 22, 2013 (UTC)
Well, guess I'm just weird then. I voted for the card-themed name. King of Noobs 01:06, May 23, 2013 (UTC)
I'm actually watched the walkthrough...with my mediocre knowledge of Japanese, I was able to know him ;)--Nur Fadzila (talk) 08:44, May 23, 2013 (UTC)
@Anonyman - I'm assuming your first sentence is sarcastic, because otherwise I don't get how it matches up with the following two. While I'm not surprised some of the votes for Ace are for appearance (e.g. Cat) or are really votes against Setzer (e.g. DSS), some of the comments (e.g. Nur) indicate familiarity with Ace. Since the game hasn't been released outside of Japan, I was wondering which alternative medium they had encountered him through. And if they voted for him without knowing a lot about him, that's fine too. SlamShuffle 20:10, May 23, 2013 (UTC)
I honestly wasn't being sarcastic. Then again, I probably shouldn't have used the word "obvious" as that's more often than not a sign of sarcasm in text. But yeah, DNC votes can just lack all basis of sense in the choice. Loll.--AnonyMan (talk) 23:19, May 23, 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I must have misunderstood you. I thought in the first sentence you were saying people DID know him through one of the choices I gave, and in the second, you were saying that they DIDN'T know him. But after reading it again, maybe you meant those were substitutes for knowing him through the game? Anyway, don't want to make a big deal, since I was just trying to find out which method (if any) people used to learn about Ace. SlamShuffle 20:21, May 24, 2013 (UTC)
My vote was anti-Setzer? lolwat? - +DeadlySlashSword+ 02:34, May 24, 2013 (UTC)
Got mixed up by the 'shadow realm' comment. Given anonyman's comment about spite votes, yours was the closest to an anti-Setzer vote I could see. My mistake. SlamShuffle 20:21, May 24, 2013 (UTC)
Nope, it was just playing on the YGO theme of the fight that seems to have been lost on most people :s To answer your question, I think a few of the pro-Ace voters went to that side because we wish we had Type-0, but ultimately, vote rationale really doesn't matter unless it's obnoxious. - +DeadlySlashSword+ 23:37, May 24, 2013 (UTC)
Ace could have won this fight if Type-0 has been localized. Monterossa (talk) 10:03, May 24, 2013 (UTC)

@Silent Voice-Of course not he's a Charming Pretty MAN. You can be pretty and manly at the same time. Anyone who thinks otherwise is foolishly mistaken --AnonyMan (talk) 22:28, May 22, 2013 (UTC)

While this is turning out to be a bit of a landslide, I would like to say it's good that another game is getting represented. There are a lot of the games which get largely ignored (some for good reason, but others not so much) --Pzykosiz (talk) 03:47, May 25, 2013 (UTC)

FINAL FANTASY VII
DEFEAT - 25 to 11½
Our two competitors for this week's Last Man Standing are rather different. One took the fall for murdering his liege despite being a man of integrity, and the other took power after his father's untimely death, despite his own less-than-honorable actions when his father was in power. They do share one thing in common: this battle, where one will move on to the next battle, and the other will fall. Will the honorable knight or the conniving businessman win this fight? Who will be the last man standing?

@Rufus Anon#1: So we're just ignoring the fact that many Shinra fools lost their fights (and lives) against Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Red XIII, Cid, and Yuffie, who themselves use "antiquated" equipment. And let's not also forget the fact that two of the most badarse Turks in the game use fairly old-style equipment as well, Reno uses a baton and Rude just punches people. If Final Fantasy should have taught you anything, old tech > new tech. King of Noobs 12:43, May 16, 2013 (UTC)

Way to take a clear joke too seriously, Noob. Besides any Shinra employee will tell you Cloud and crew plowed through them because they cheated using an assload of marbles. And magic beats tech...unless it's the Ghostbusters.--AnonyMan (talk) 22:28, May 16, 2013 (UTC)

My bad then. I'm horrible at picking up things like jokes or sarcasm on the net. Especially without the tell-tale :P after the post. King of Noobs 21:56, May 17, 2013 (UTC)

I haven't played XII, so I read through his entry to see if I would consider voting for him over Rufus. For most of the game, he seems like exactly the sort of 'honorable no matter what' knight that I love Cyan for being. But his choice at the end of the game makes no sense to me. Rufus' Advent Children switch makes far more sense to me. Switching subjects, I blame the landslide against Rufus on the fact that Basch's art looks like one of Barney Stinson in a mildly elaborate pick-up attempt.SlamShuffle 19:54, May 16, 2013 (UTC)

Well thanks a lot! I can now never unsee that image! Forever will my knight in shining armor be related to sleazy Barney Stinson. I'm devastated.Bahamut knows best (talk) 07:51, May 17, 2013 (UTC)
Suit of armor up! Now, if I can just get you to imagine Wayne Brady inside of Gabranth's armor, my work is complete. SlamShuffle 19:21, May 17, 2013 (UTC)
Which choice are you referring to? The fact that he followed his brother's dying wish to protect Larsa? --Pzykosiz (talk) 08:55, May 17, 2013 (UTC)
Correct. If I'm reading it correctly, in order to follow his brother's dying wish to protect his brother's charge, he has to leave his own charge and work for the nation that has destroyed so much in his life. I may be reading it incorrectly, but if that's accurate, the closest parallel I can think of is Cyan defending Gesthal at Leo's request (the analogy doesn't totally fit, but captures how much of a reversal it feels like). SlamShuffle 19:21, May 17, 2013 (UTC)
I haven't finished FF12, but last time I checked, Larsa wasn't an evil old Emperor with a lust for power. --yeah_93 22:34, May 17, 2013 (UTC)

!Fanart=canon! - +DeadlySlashSword+ 19:27, May 18, 2013 (UTC)
I think the main thing to remember with Basch working for Larsa is that keeping Larsa as emperor is beneficial to all the lands. Basch was at that point (presumably) one of the 6 most powerful people in all of Ivalice and therefore could protect Larsa from physical threats as well as political pressure by keeping him on an honorable and noble path like himself. Gabranth knew he'd lost his honor in his search for revenge, whereas Basch had always been a good and noble man. Gabranth wanted more than anything to keep Larsa safe and kind. Bahamut knows best (talk) 23:16, May 18, 2013 (UTC)
I had only read the entries for Basch and the kingdoms he fought for when I made my comment. Probably should have read Larsa's as well, because between his page and the comments above, Basch's choice makes more sense now (still question leaving his current charge though). Recommend adding to Basch's page to explicitly call out the fact that he's serving the good of Ivalice as well as his brother's dying wish. (also, apologies if it's taboo to add to the peanut gallery this late. Didn't see anything against it in the rules.) Slamshuffle 19:24, May 22, 2013 (UTC)

  18. I don't like VIII, but I have to admit that Edea is the show stealer of that game. Certainly a better villain than Ultimecia. @Ffgamesftw - How is finding out that Edea is possessed by a time witch a worse twist than finding out that Exdeath is actually a really pissed off tree?Squallisnotemo (talk) 07:57, May 7, 2013 (UTC)

I think they're referring to the whole Edea's Orphanage thing. Which personally I don't find as outrageous as everyone goes on about, but it was somewhat unnecessary to the plot... Emperor-PSPFieldMATEUS 12:23, May 7, 2013 (UTC)
It HAS to be the orphanage thing. It's rather consistently the most critized part of 8's plot. And hey, Exdeath's origin isn't bad. A little silly, maybe, but FFV is one of the silliest games in the main series. And that Tree had a tough job.--AnonyMan (talk) 23:52, May 7, 2013 (UTC)

Honor, loyalty, and badass knight skills. Does Basch have what it takes to overcome Beatrix in his first title defense? Who will be the last knight standing?

Votes for Basch[]

  1. As great as Beatrix truly is, Basch lets a stupid kid run around shouting "Basch lives" in a hostile city-state during a terrible minigame. Only a real man (or woman, sorry Beatrix) would be willing to go through something like that. C A T U S E 05:55, April 28, 2013 (UTC)

I'm curious, what exactly makes Basch badass? I understand Beatrix, but Basch doesn't seem to be badass type to me. It's not a knock on him, I just see him as a humble knight. Razordash04:02, April 30, 2013 (UTC)

Badassery excepts all kinds, Basch carried himself with quiet diginty and honor and went through hell doing it. Most of Bea's cred comes from her power anyway(and she's not the most badass IX character) You don't need to be overwhelmingly powerful to be a badass.--AnonyMan (talk) 04:45, April 30, 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, people tend to dismiss war crimes in the world of Final Fantasy. I always wondered why Seifer wasn't executed after the events of Final Fantasy VIII - instead he just lives peacefully in Balamb. The man was a deranged war criminal. Though I always assumed Beatrix was let off the hook on account of her helping save the world. Plus, I'd find it hard to believe that Garnet of all people would have Beatrix persecuted. These two warriors are both noble knights who struggle between their devotions to their lord and their devotions to their ideals, putting them in opposition to the party for a time. 21½ to 25
Loyalty, strength and honor are just a few words that could be used to describe this week's combatants, Cyan and Basch. Both are older members of their respective parties who joined resistance forces after their homelands were decimated by a much larger empire. Both are driven by revenge, a wish to resurrect their fallen nations, and lost family members. But whose honor shines brightest? VICTOR
BASCH

Votes for Cyan[]

  1. Cyan's story arc is probably more memorable and one of the longer side stories in FFVI; sadly, like most of FFXII's characters, Basch's storyline largely felt like an abridged version pushed for a quick release after half a decade of production. --ClixPsi (talk) 06:46, April 7, 2013 (UTC)

Cyan doesn't really have an especially strong tie to another party member, nor does the game allow him to properly confront Kefka (the scene in the Imperial Camp outside of Doma is rather rushed). @ScathMote - Given that the final dungeon in FFVI requires 3 parties (12 characters out of 14 total), I'm surprised at the implication that Cyan didn't make the cut for use. I typically leave Gau and Umaro on the airship. Who do you leave behind? Or do you simply not collect Cyan in the World of Ruin? SlamShuffle 19:24, April 9, 2013 (UTC)

Gogo replaced Cyan. Umaro also stayed behind. ScatheMote 21:04, April 9, 2013 (UTC)
He's not totally useless, what with Magicite and all. Though alot of the personal skilla do become less useful as the game goes on. --AnonyMan (talk) 21:35, April 9, 2013 (UTC)
Hell, I used Cyan in the final fight. Worked out just fine, dunno what all the complaining is about. - +DeadlySlashSword+ 22:28, April 9, 2013 (UTC)
I think people tend to exaggerate a bit when they talk about how much they hate a character's fighting style. There shouldn't be any problem in beating VI if you use Cyan in your final party, same goes for Cait Sith in VII and other characters. SetzerLeonhart (talk) 22:40, April 9, 2013 (UTC)
By the time you collect everyone and get to the final boss, Kefka isn't that much of a challenge anyway, even if you're usin Umaro. Hey, I started with Relm in the final party --Pzykosiz (talk) 10:12, April 13, 2013 (UTC)

@Tidus357: Cyan's just that cool. Simple as that. And that's exactly what I mean about Vaan, there's nothing wrong with him. Kid's totally benign. XII's cast is okay(except like, Fran) but VI's is much more endearing.--AnonyMan (talk) 21:35, April 9, 2013 (UTC)

i think this is turning into a general hate thread, mostly directed at characters who AREN'T IN THE BATTLE. By the way, what's your problem with Fran? --Pzykosiz (talk) 02:29, April 10, 2013 (UTC)
Nonsense, dear boy. Just merely a few making observations to things stated and responding to them. My issues with Fran are kinda meager and not worth getting into. But she CAN go to Heck. Jk.--AnonyMan (talk) 21:29, April 10, 2013 (UTC)
I don't even know what you mean. Allow me to explain my comment.
The joke is that everyone hates XII because of Vaan. Not true, but he really is an idiot, at least until he puts a shirt on. And it's certainly one of the reasons I don't particularly like XII. I do like Basch though. - BlitzballArtTidus357 02:27, April 11, 2013 (UTC)
Why is he an idiot? Because he doesn't wear a shirt? 92.28.179.152 13:16, April 13, 2013 (UTC)
Wearing a shirt has nothing to do with it, I don't know why people care, especially since it doesn't have anything to do with the fight going on.
...of course, not answering your question is just asking people to tell me that I only dislike Vaan because it's 'cool' to do so. C A T U S E 15:12, April 13, 2013 (UTC)
It's related by virtue of being FFXII and half of the current DNC combatants also hailing from it. And to answer the question(jokingly of course) he's an idiot because he thought he could get away with his obviously painted-on abs. Clearly. --AnonyMan (talk) 22:37, April 13, 2013 (UTC)

Because I'm sure it's bound to pop up, most likely in votes against Tiddy, is the infamous laughing scene. Alot of people call that scene awkward, cringe-inducing, dumb, bad, etc. And not realized it was SUPPOSED to be like that. Tidus may be a bit pf a flake(ESPECIALLY compared to Galuf Badassion) but can we cut him some slack on this?--AnonyMan (talk) 00:18, April 3, 2013 (UTC)

NO --Pzykosiz (talk) 00:23, April 3, 2013 (UTC)
It's definitely supposed to be like that, but no matter how awkward it was supposed to be... doesn't excuse bad acting. That was some of the most unrealistic fake laughing I've heard in a long time -- and I'm not talking about the start of the laughing scene where they really are fake laughing. C A T U S E 01:12, April 3, 2013 (UTC)
Thirded. I understand perfectly the point of the scene, and it is absolutely fine in its concept. It's just really goddamn irritating in its execution. I can bear to sit through it once, on first playthrough. Replays, I dread it. If only X had a skip scene option like X-2... we can but hope they're going to add it in the HD version -- Sorceror Nobody Flan 14:38, April 5, 2013 (UTC)
Noted. True, you can't really excuse questionable quality voice work(though I haven't played X in years to really judge). Next order of business. Do people still loathe Vaan simply because he's not the focus of XII despite being the protagonist? If so, stop that. You'd think he pooped in their cereal and killed a box of kittens with the ire aimed his way. --AnonyMan (talk) 20:39, April 5, 2013 (UTC)
Vaan is just as irritating as Tidus, if not more so. His constant whining about being a sky pirate is unbearable. Then, as one of the most inappropriately timed questions ever, "So, how old were you again?", to just kick Fran when she's down --Pzykosiz (talk) 23:47, April 5, 2013 (UTC)
I have a legit reason for hating Vaan. C A T U S E 01:18, April 6, 2013 (UTC)
Haha. At least it's better than, "He's not important. I HATE HIM!" though I disagree with you assessments, Pzy. And think you might need to lighten up. But that's neither here nor there. Loll at the link.--AnonyMan (talk) 02:14, April 6, 2013 (UTC)
Playing XII again reminds me that Vaan has way less lines compared to Tidus since he's unimportant to the plot, mentioning the whole sky pirate business a grand total of maybe five times after Rabanastre. A lot of the actual important characters do a lot more whining. - +DeadlySlashSword+ 06:52, April 6, 2013 (UTC)

No, Choc's accurate. Alot of Dissidia Tidus' attacks move him around and out of the way to avoid attacks. Fitting as he's an athlete that plays a game that's football, American football and Rugby together. Kuja just tells gravity to suck it, what with him gliding and flat out just flying(In EX).--AnonyMan (talk) 21:18, April 3, 2013 (UTC)
You are right. Tidus is one of the few characters in Dissidia who can dodge while attacking. This characteristic can be deadly in close combats. GoldenChocobo 08:28, April 4, 2013 (UTC)

  9. Excalibur is an actual magic weapon. The Masamune is just a sword Masamune made. Really cool, yes, but it's up against Excalibur. Also, Gilgamesh.--Otherarrow (talk) 17:02, March 25, 2013 (UTC)

  13. The Excalibur can only ever be wielded by a chosen few. The Masamune tends to get passed around, especially in the original Final Fantasy. Additionally, while the Masamune is powerful, only the Excalibur can claim that it is strong against everything with a type (again, original Final Fantasy). 14. The Excalibur has only ever been a holy sword, unlike the Masamune, which as been a dark sword in a handful of incarnations. EdgarXTerra4ever 18:21, March 26, 2013 (UTC)
  15. Steiner>Auron, Sephiroth or any other Massy wielder,uh except for the FFV cast(who own Steiner as Excal wielders) Actually, I could just as easy voted for Massy for the same reason,V's cast. But I think the "Cool Katana"-ness will give Exie some troble.AnonyMan (talk) 22:58, March 26, 2013 (UTC)

Cat, I think you've gotten your wires crossed. The Excalibur is a part of the Arthurian legend, making its existence heavily disputable, while there are several known Masamunes. -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 03:21, March 25, 2013 (UTC)

Did I seriously just put my vote in the wrong list? What is wrong with me today? Emoticon_indifferent.png C A T U S E 03:25, March 25, 2013 (UTC)
Eh, it happens. Truth be told, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a real Excalibur, what we know of King Arthur really isn't enough to make a call on whether or not the story's real. It's exaggerated, certainly, but not if it's real. -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 03:49, March 25, 2013 (UTC)

To clear things up, the Masamune is not a "sword" as such, or least not in the vein that Excalibur refers to a particular sword, the one given to King Arthur by the Lady of the Lake in the mythos. Masamune was a famed Japanese swordsmith, not a sword itself, and I believe the confirmed Masamunes SMC is referring to would be several swords crafted by him.Squallisnotemo (talk) 09:09, March 25, 2013 (UTC)

It's still correct, as "a Masamune" is considered a correct way to refer to a sword made by Masamune, as you can see in the article I linked to. Also, it's SCM, damn it, how do so many people have trouble with a three letter acronym. -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 09:17, March 25, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah i wasn't saying you were wrong, just referencing what you said. Also sorry for getting your name wrong, my brain is fried after my law exam today so i'm not paying the most attentionSquallisnotemo (talk) 09:34, March 25, 2013 (UTC)

Is it just me, or does that excalibur look a lot like the Tournesol --Pzykosiz (talk) 07:45, March 28, 2013 (UTC)

More like the Tournesol looks a lot like the Excalibur. -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 09:00, March 29, 2013 (UTC)
Possibly that too. Does anyone here happen to have Excalibur lying around at home so we can compare them? Possibly sitting around as a doorstop or a lamp? --Pzykosiz (talk) 05:33, March 31, 2013 (UTC)
