Abilities in Final Fantasy V are split into two different categories, as shown below.

Support abilities[]

Support abilities are passive abilities which provide special bonuses, such as HP and MP boosts, moving faster on the Overworld, and being able to find hidden pathways. These abilities must be equipped to be used, except for those that are innate to a specific job, in which case they are always active. The Mime and Freelancer jobs acquire all of the innate support abilities of a given job once that job has been mastered.

Command abilities[]

Command abilities need to be manually selected in battle, and range from various magic spells, special battle commands, and special commands to escape from battle quicker. These abilities must be equipped to be used. The Mime job must first equip the Attack and Item commands to use them, and thus is the only job able not to have them available during battle if the player so chooses. Additionally, all jobs except the Freelancer and the Berserker have an innate command ability (referred to as a job command in some versions of the game), which is permanently attached to them from the start and cannot be unequipped. The Monk's job command is the only one that cannot be learned by leveling up the job, and thus can only be used as a Monk, or as another job mimicking it.
