This is a list of abilities in Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Each party member has a basic Attack command, one Unique Ability tied to Triangle, the ability to guard by holding L1, and a set of abilities usable from the command menu. In addition to these, many passive abilities are provided by equipped weapons and accessories.

Many of the abilities usable from the command menu expend one or more ATB charges. A party member builds up an ATB charge gradually over time, by performing normal attacks, blocking attacks, or through various effects provided by some Complete Materia Complete Materia. To chain abilities together, one must build their ATB quickly in-between expending them. The abilities available from the menu are Abilities, Spells, Item, Summon, and Limit. Of the command menu abilities, only limit breaks cost no ATB charge to use.

The equipped weapon will also provide a wide variety of passive abilities, unlocked by spending Skill Points on the weapon from the Weapon Upgrades screen in the menu.

Basic commands[]

Most basic commands apply only during battle, though the command menu can be used at any time.

Command Button Requirement Description
Commands Menu X All Open the Commands Menu and enter Tactical Mode, slowing down time while one selects picks an ability.
Attack Square All Attack against a target based on the party member controlled and their weapon equipped. The attacks will also build up an ATB gauge.

For Cloud, Tifa, and Barret (when equipped with melee weapons), using the command multiple times will perform a combo of moves specific to that character and their weapon. For Cloud and Tifa, holding the button down will perform a specialized attack; Cloud will swing his sword in a wide arc, while Tifa, will perform an uppercut similar to Whirling Uppercut.

Barret (when equipped with ranged weapons) and Aerith can just hold the button to unleash consecutive attacks.

Strong Attack Square Cloud in Punisher Mode Identical to a normal Attack in function, but more powerful, and faster. Holding the button down will cause Cloud to perform an overhead swing; doing so will briefly put him under Berserk Berserk.
Dodge-roll Circle All Evade in the specified direction to avoid an attack.
Guard R1 All Brace for damage, reducing damage taken by 40%, and making it slightly harder to interrupt.
Shortcut L1 All Open up a list of shortcuts, tied to X, Circle, Square, or Triangle, set by the player in the menu.

Unique Abilities[]

Command Button Requirement Description
Punisher Mode Triangle Cloud in Operator Mode Switches to Punisher Mode. This mode greatly slows Cloud's movement speed, but increases his attack damage, attack speed, and gives him the ability to counterattack melee attacks against him.
Operator Mode Triangle Cloud in Punisher Mode Switches to Operator Mode, Cloud's default mode. This mode is greater for mobility and provides a mix of offense and defense. Cloud will automatically switch to this mode when dodge-rolling.
Charge Triangle Barret Causes Barret to pause and charge his weapon, filling up his Overcharge or Overrun gauge to use again.
Overcharge Triangle Barret with a ranged weapon When the charge is filled, fires several powerful bullets towards a target, filling up Barret's ATB gauge. After use, it must be recharged again.
Overrun Triangle Barret with a melee weapon When the charge is filled, Barret charges forward, pinning enemies down along the way, then jumps up and slams his weapon into the ground, dealing area-of-effect physical damage. Barret cannot be interrupted during this.
Whirling Uppercut Triangle Tifa at default chi Performs a powerful uppercut punch towards an enemy, knocking smaller enemies into the air. Increases stagger bonus damage by 5% for the rest of the stagger duration.
Omnistrike Triangle Tifa with 1 chi level Performs a shoulder barge attack towards an enemy, dealing powerful damage and increasing stagger bonus damage for the rest of the stagger duration. Accessed with 1 chi level, or 1 use of Unbridled Strength.
Rise and Fall Triangle Tifa with 2 chi levels Leaps towards a target and kicks them, then throws punches after, dealing powerful damage and increasing stagger bonus damage for the rest of the stagger duration. Accessed with 2 chi level, or 2 uses of Unbridled Strength.
Tempest Triangle Aerith -
Throw Triangle Yuffie Throws equipped shuriken towards an enemy, causing subsequent normal attacks (altered by Elemental Ninjutsu) to become ranged for a duration.
Retrieve Triangle Yuffie Causes Yuffie to jump towards and grab shuriken from afflicted enemy, dealing damage in the process and returning normal attacks to melee attacks.

Commands Menu[]

Abilities tied to the command menu can either be used from the menu, or tied to a shortcut using R1. The abilities available from the menu are Abilities, Magic, Item, Summon, and Limit.

Outside of battle, only Spells and Items can be used.

Command Requirement Description
Abilities Various This skillset includes party member-specific abilities as well as those provided by Command Materia Command Materia, and cost either 1 or 2 ATB charges. Among party member-specific abilities, each character has one available by default, and others that are learned by equipping weapons. Achieving 100% proficiency with one will unlock it permanently. Yuffie uniquely has a command ability that is gained from a weapon passive, rather than mastered to keep permanently: Mug.
Spells Magic Materia Magic Materia Spells that are provided by any equipped magic materia. Spells all have a varying MP cost. In battle, they cost one ATB charge, but outside of battle, there are no restrictions.
Item All Use any item that is currently usable. During battle, items cost one ATB charge to use, but outside of battle, there are no restrictions.
Summon Summoning Materia Summoning Materia Calls forth a summon from the character's equipped summoning materia. This command is only available in certain fights, and after the party takes significant damage. When the summon is active, this is replaced by "Summon Abilities".
Summon Abilities Active summon Issue summon-specific commands to the active summon. Any party member can issue commands, and issuing one will use up their own ATB charges, either 1 or 2 depending on the ability.
Limit All With the character's limit gauge full, use one of their available limit breaks. Unlike most abilities, this consumes no ATB.
